Overview of services

Mauritius has five municipal councils and four district councils which has various
department that provide services such as:
1. Administrations Department
For legal services, human resources development, information technology
and information service and also for international affairs
2. Finance Department
Responsible for payment of taxes, rates, renewal of permits and fines
3. Land use and Planning Department
For application of building and land permits, issue of clearance of
certificates or building and land use permits, updating of cadastre and
processing of direct sales and sales involving excision or division
4. Public Infrastructure Department
For construction and maintenance of public infrastructures such as
streams and bridges traffic signals and road signs, providing handrails,
street lighting, pavement, bus, drain, shelters, playgrounds, community
centres, infant schools, market places, public gardens, roads and so on.
5. Welfare Department
Responsible for organising social, sport and cultural activities as well as
running of nurseries, pre-primary schools and kindergartens. Various
computer courses are also offered.
6. Public health Department
o For payment of trade fees for business activities, annual payment of
stalls in market or fairs.

Responsible routine inspections for detection of nuisances on


wastelands or street borders as well as inspections of public
lavatories and for occasional activities, displaying of
advertisements, affixing of posters, buss toll fees, controlling of
hawkers, reporting on general cleanliness for remedial actions by
the sanitation section, control to ensure payment of appropriate
trade fees.

Responsible for providing sanitary services such as; removing of


refuse, cleaning of drains, sweeping canal banks or road, chopping
of overhanging vegetation, attending complaints and monitoring of
trade refuse fee
Control and maintain cemeteries cremations grounds.

For processing contravention for wards, market and fairs.

7. Library
For renewal or reservation, payment of fines and application forms.

Existing ICT Infrastructure


Information Communication Technology (ICT) are replacing the traditional
resources to satisfy the diverse information needed by people of the locality.
There are different ICT infrastructure that are being used in municipality/district
councils such as:
1. Hardware
LCD Projectors are used for displaying communiqus and upcoming
events.
Printers for printing purposes such as receipts, photocopy,
application forms
Computers are used for computer courses, processing of
applications
Routers/Switch for free Wi-Fi connection
2. Software
Database management system are used for creating, retrieving,
updating, deleting data from the database and to provide a central
storage of data so as to allow multiple users to access the
information with security.
3. Network
Mesh Topology
Internet service provider which provide internet connections.
Servers such as File Server-to store files, Web Server, Print Servermanages more than one printer, Network Server- manages network
traffic and Database Server-database queries.
Websites to provide guides on services available; application forms,
list of fees as well as information about the municipality facilities.
