Envisaged location of proposed work

Benefits

Cheeseburn would get and affinity to the local area through an already a
much loved style of architecture for the North East. This would not only
connect the sculpture park to the rest of the North East but also with other
sculptures across the country, both currently in suite and planed.

A new piece of large site specific sculpture developed especially for

Cheeseburn.

International exposure through my (the artists) current connections and

networking streams, including Facebook, Twitter (1000 followers) and a 250
emailing list.

Opportunity to invite local companies and people to invest in this project

through buying a limited edition hand made artist print. (explained further
later)

An addition for you guided tour and an outstanding example of your RIBA
styled art commissioning process.

Timeline

1. Summer 2016 - Build and install the model.

2. Summer 2016 - Produce a series of prints of the work to exhibit and sell at
Cheeseburn and online.

3. Summer 2016 - Advertise proposed installation in local news (North East)

4. Autumn 2016 Approach sponsors and potentially seek funding from ACE.

5. Autumn 2016 to Spring 2017 finalize sponsorship, get a structural engineer

to confirm structure.

6. Early Summer 2017 - build and install work.

Artist statement

The built environment conditions our lives in ways we are still

discovering. Whether they are imposing, inspiring, subtle or spectacular,
the structures that surround us have always been designed to influence
the way we see, think and move.
'The Great Builders', Kenneth Powell.

The intriguing building methods of the industrial age inspire Devereux to

make large-scale architectural installations, sculptures and paintings.
Using the forms of bridges, railways and stations, his works mimic an
industrial style and aesthetic. Devereuxs sculptures, whilst appearing to
be functional architectural features made from cast iron, are in fact made
from lightweight wood, thus questioning the idea that form follows
function, and transforming them into sculptural objects. The theatricality
of these architectural pieces pays homage the once labour-intensive
methods of making these structures, whilst still preserving their visually
impressive grandeur and ornate, over-engineered qualities.

Each Victorian bridge, train Station, tunnel, and other major

infrastructure, had an intended purpose inherent to the past, not just a
formal purpose, but the aesthetic form of the design that created its long
sustained grandeur. The works have the potential to be components
taken directly from a 19th century structure. Devereux trades these
traditional methods of making with the use of modern, lightweight and
more practical materials, while still adorning to the familiar qualities of
being over-the-top and over-engineered. It is Devereux's passionate
vision that makes you believe its the real thing.
