ADHD Diagnosis

-ADHD is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a

combination. It is often genetic, but whatever the specific cause may be, it may
cause problems early in life as the brain is developing.
-Many different tests can be used for diagnosis, all involving a physical exam and
behavior evaluation. DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual)
3 Different Kinds of ADHD:
ADHD-inattentive: get bored easily, problems paying attention, loses or forgets
things often, and has trouble getting organized or completing tasks
ADHD-hyperactive/impulsive: cannot sit still, tries to do many things at once, and
speaks out impulsively
ADHD-combined: have both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms
Treatment- A 3 Part Approach
1. Behavioral Management- helping person know what is appropriate behavior
and learn ways of replacing inappropriate behavior with better kind.
2. Medicine- Stimulants are the most common types used to treat and help
balance certain chemicals in the brain that are thought to cause ADHD. This
process must be maintained over a long period of time, and may need to be
changed as the person develops. Constant monitoring and evaluation are
required.
(Methylphenidate--Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, Daytrana)/Dexmethylphenidate
(Focalin)/Amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (Adderall)/Dextroamphetamine
(Dexedrine, Dextrostat)/Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse)
3. Counseling- One on one meeting with a therapist, psychologist, or other
specialists. Family counseling also is a benefit because it makes it easier for
everyone to cope with challenges of living with someone suffering from
ADHD.
