A customer has a Managed WAN IPVPN service provided by Level 3

Communication.

They report that they experienced a short outage to their service the previous
evening, which disrupted their business operations. They would like to
understand what happened, and assurance that the service is stable going
forward.
Our demarcation is the LAN port of the Cisco CPE router.
The Core IP team have indicated there were no problems on the Core WAN
network.
Please describe what steps you would take to:
1. Identify what happened
2. Validate if the service is now stable
Please include any commands you would enter into the equipment, along with
the expected output from these commands.

Assuming R1 and R2 are cisco routers, this looks like a HSRP issue.
1. There are two routers in which one is actively passing traffic and the other
on standby in case the one active becomes unavailable. At one point the
interface on the active router or the active router itself went down and the
standby router became active. The short outage to service is caused when
the standby router becomes active.
2. Using the show standby command on R1 and R2 I see the interface on
which HSRP group is configured on, the state of the device whether active
or standby, the priority, which router is active and which is standby. Logs
on the routers show when one became active and the other standby. If the
active router or interface is back on it then starts passing traffic and he
standby becomes what it is configured for. A standby because of its lower
priority number.
