As a part of the module of Engineering Principles and Communication, every student was

due to do a research. Actually this was a group research. Our group was named as Group
32 by the lectures. And Group 32 was formed with 5 people; Shanisha, Hashan, Prabhashini,
Keshani and myself. From given topics our selection was: Role of technology in modern
music.
Since doing a research is a new thing for our group and myself, it was I who insisted to
learn the methodology and procedure of doing a research. And this was a thing that I
always wanted to learn and to know how things were done in a research. I went through
the lecture slides that the lecturers given as a helpline. And since it was only an introduction
to research process, I had to surf the internet for further information. Apart from that I
gained much knowledge from the research papers @ BIDTI, BCIS libraries. Although they are
about foreign relation strategies and diplomatic relations with other nations, it helped me
and my team to understand and have a clear path to do the research in advance. Then the
brainstorm session also took place and I think I gave a great contribution to that.
After those discussion sessions I got the responsibility to create questionnaires
relating our research. And for that also I had to read and understand some old
questionnaires which belonged to previous researches. Most of them had no any connection
with our topic. But I managed to set the questionnaire with the help of the other group
members. Then the tough part for everyone: distributing questionnaires to the people and
collecting back, mainly because of that was a whole new experience apart from the rest,
particularly . BMICH was my due place to distribute the questionnaires and collect them
back. It was not a strange place for me mainly because I go there 4 times a week for
Diplomacy and Global affairs certificate course on week days and Spanish beginner on
Sunday. Though distributing the questionnaires was somewhat easy when it compared to
collect them back. They asked various questions and I had to answer them with respect. And
also I note some comments on what they felt about the questionnaire and the way we did
our research to assess our success and for future purposes.
Then came the analysing part; I had to cope up with my team members in order to finalize
the results and came to a conclusion, through analysing the results. And also I helped with
them to find new trends and future potentials in our research. Finally preparing the final
thesis; it was not so hard to complete mainly because of the precautions that we took at
the beginning of the research (referring the old research papers and thesis). But I had to
prepare the conclusion and research findings for the final report. And I must specially
mention that there was a lack of my contribution on the presentation series that went on.
But I shared my ideas and views on how it should be in those weeks and I took my step
out in the slides making process because thats where formality should considered. And I
have to concern about more to practice formality in official writings.
Throughout this research process I learned so much with regarding team working, despite
previous times. Its always not easy to work with a team, especially when it comes to a
thing like a research. And once again the greater importance of brainstorm sessions was
signified in this research. Personally, I think that brainstorm sessions are the foundation of
any successful research or team work. As I mentioned earlier working with a team is not

always easy, everyone is essential and the role of everyone should be unique to one
another. Since each one is different from one another, the conflicts could happen within the
group. And conflict resolution within the group is also much importance. And it should
handle with care. I think during this research too, we had to undergo that whole process
and yet I think we did our best to resolve every erupted problem. I know that we aimed for
perfection, but within ourselves, we havent been so perfect. But personally I believe that we
fulfilled the definition of success and redefined the definition of perfection.
