Course Details

About The Course


The highly successful 1st APSIC training Course was conducted in Singapore 2002. The aim of the
11.5 days training course is to equip participants with the comprehensive working skills necessary
for the practice of Infection Control & Epidemiology.
An outstanding teaching faculty of infection control experts and experienced practitioners (both
from local & overseas) chosen for their topical expertise and teaching experience will conduct this
course. The topics covered will be highly relevant and up-to-date. Key topics include:
Use of Statistics and Quality Tools
Quality, Patient Safety and Infection Control
Epidemiology
Bacteriology
Product Evaluation
Implementing Guidelines
Surveillance
Setting an Infection Control Programme
Learning strategies consist of lectures, panel discussions, small group discussions, case scenarios
and Q&A. This course is also complemented by site visits to local hospitals for better understanding
of the applicability of the knowledge learnt during the course. The APSIC course is also a platform
for networking opportunities and knowledge sharing.
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
Set up and run an Infection Control program at their own facilities
Understand and apply various surveillance techniques and control of health-associated infections
and antimicrobial resistant organisms
Apply quality improvement principles and tools in bringing their programs to a higher level of
quality and safety
Certification
Only candidates who fulfil the minimum attendance requirement of 90% will be eligible to sit for the
written examination. A certificate will be issued to each participant upon successful completion of
the written examination.
This Basic Training Course is recognised by the University of New South Wales, Australia, for 6 credit
points towards its Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management Hospital Epidemiology for
Infection Control. CME/CNE points will be credited to Singapore registered healthcare personnel
accordingly.

Payment Details
All course fees can be made by cheques or bank draft made payable to Infection Control
Association (Singapore) and mailed to the secretariat. All payments are to be made in SINGAPORE
DOLLARS. A receipt will be issued within 10 days of receiving payment.
Cancellation / Replacement Policy
Request for cancellation/replacement must be made in writing to the Conference Secretariat, latest
by 1st July 2014. The organising committee regrets that requests received after this date will not be
entertained. 75% of the course fees will be refunded within six months after the course.
Liability
The organisers are not liable for any personal accidents, illness, loss or damage to private
properties of delegates during the Course. Delegates are advised to make their own arrangements
with respect to personal insurance.
Disclaimer
Whilst every attempt will be made to ensure that all aspects of the conference will take place as
scheduled, the Organising Committee reserves the right to make appropriate changes should the
need arises

Ms Patricia Ching
Ms Patricia Ching has been practicing infection control since 1985. She received basic nurse
training and midwifery training from Hong Kong in 1967 and 1971 respectively and graduated with
a Diploma in Nursing Administration in Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1991. Besides infection
control, she is also trained in intensive care and coronary care. Ms Patricia Ching is the founding
chairwoman of Hong Kong Infection Control Nurses Association, member of Asia Pacific Society
for Infection Control and also a Board Member of International Federation of Infection Control since
January 2012. Ms Patricia Ching is now holding the position of a Senior Infection Control Nurse
Adviser at Hong Kong Baptist Hospital and Nurse Consultant for Accreditation at University of Hong
Kong Shenzhen Hospital, China.

Prof Seto Wing Hong
Dr Wing Hong Seto played a key role in initiating Infection Control in Hong Kong and started
the local training course for Infection Control Practitioners in 1985. He is involved extensively
in Infection Control education throughout China and the region and is the Founding President
of the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control. He was conferred honorary professorships by
several universities in China including Honorary Professorship for Infection Control by the Military
Postgraduate Medical College, PLA General Hospital (301) and the Peoples Liberation Army
of China has in addition appointed him honorary consultant for Infection Control in 1999. He is
currently the Clinical Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, School of Public Health
at the University of Hong Kong.
A/Prof Anucha Apisarnthanarak
Dr. Anucha Apisarnthanarak is currently an Associate Professor at Thammasat University Hospital
and Chief of Infectious Diseases Division at the same institution. He also serves as Adjunct Visiting
Professor at Division of Infectious Diseases, Washington University School of Medicine, USA. Dr.
Apisarnthanaraks research focuses on infection control in resource-limited settings including control
of MDR-pathogens, antimicrobial stewardship, epidemiology and control of emerging infectious
diseases as well as outbreak investigation. Currently, Dr. Anucha has published more than 120
peer-review articles and more than 20 peer-review book chapters. He has been a key committee
member of many national and international societies including the SHEA Annual Meeting Planning
Committee/Publication Committee since 2008, editorial board for Clinical Infectious Diseases and
Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology journal since 2008, Thai National Nosocomial Infection
Control Group, and Thai National Antimicrobial Resistant Surveillance Center.
