I. For the flowing function:

x(t) = e-at u(t)

a>0

a) Find its Laplace transform.

b) Represent ROC on complex plan (s-plane).
c) Specify the axes nominations.
Solution:
b) Find its Laplace transform.
Using the table 9.2/page 692 we find:
Re{s}> - a
c) Represent ROC on complex plan (s-plane).

d) Specify the axes nominations.

- Horizontal axis: Re{s} or -axis.
- Vertical Axis: Im{s} or j-axis.
II. For the flg. function:
X(s) =

1
(s + 1) (s + 2)

a) Plot the pole-zero pattern and define whether it is right-sided or left-sided.

b) Define its inverse Laplace transform.

We first perform a partial-fraction expansion to obtain:

To compute A and B we use the relation:

And

Consequently the partial-fraction expansion for X (s) is:

ROC: For first term: Re{s}> - 1. ROC is to right to its pole (Figure-a).
For second term: Re{s}> - 2. ROC is to right to its pole also (Figure-b).
For both together: Re{s}> - 1. ROC is to right to the rightmost pole
(Figure-c).

Each of these terms corresponds to right-sided signal.

b) Define its inverse Laplace transform.
Using the table 9.2/page 692 we find:

Consequently:

III.

For the flowing signal:

x(t) = 3e-2t u(t) - 2e-t u(t)
a) Find its Laplace transform.
b) Sketch the pole-zero plot of X (s).

c) Draw the conclusion.

Solution:
a) Find its Laplace transform.
Using the table 9.2/page 692 we find:
- For 3e-2tu(t):

Re{s}> - 2

- For 2e-tu(t):

Re{s}> - 1

So the set of values of Re{s} for which the Laplace transforms of both terms
converges is Re{s}> - 1, consequently:

Re{s}> - 1

Re{s}> - 1

b) Represent ROC on complex plan (s-plane) indicating the poles and zeros.

Tut 10/340CEN/56s

Poles: They are when X(s) =

i.e when the denominator = 0 i.e Re{s}= -1 or -2.
Zeros: They are when X(s) = 0 i.e when the numerator = 0 i.e Re{s}= 1.
c) Draw the conclusion.
The knowledge of the algebraic form of X(s) does not by itself identify the
ROC for the Laplace transform. A complete specification of a rational Laplace
transform consists of:
- Algebraic Expression.
- Pole-zero plot of the transform, together with its ROC (shaded region).
