MA130 Assignment 1 (March 14)

INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer all the question. (All or only a selected number of question will be graded.)
Write answers clearly, in an organized manner, with justifications, and showing all your work.
This is due on Monday, April 4 by 4:00PM.
Write your tutorial class day and time on the front page.
This is an individual assignment and answers must be written individually. However, if you
get help from other students disclose their names and ID numbers under Group names.

[1] If a tank holds 5000 gallons of water, which drains from the bottom of the tank in 40 minutes,
then Torricellis Law gives the volume V of water remaining in the tank after t minutes as

1 2
V = 5000 1 t , 0 t 40.
40
Find the rate at which water is draining from the tank after (a) 5 min, (b) 10 min, (c) 20 min,
and (d) 40 min. At what time is the water flowing out the fastest? The slowest? Summarize your
findings.
[2] Water is leaking out of an inverted conical tank at a rate of 10,000 cm3 /min at the same time
that water is being pumped into the tank at a constant rate. The tank has height 6 m and the
diameter at the top is 4 m. If the water level is rising at a rate of 20 cm3 /min when the height of
the water is 2 m, find the rate at which water is being pumped into the tank.
[3]
(a) Use a linear approximation to estimate sin 1 .
(b) The edge of a cube was found to be 30 cm with a possible error in measurement of 0.1 cm.
Use differentials to estimate the maximum possible error, relative error, and percentage error in
computing (i) the volume of the cube and (ii) the surface area of the cube.

[4] Find the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of f (x) = x 4 x2 on [1, 2].
[5] Show that

1 + x < 1 + 21 x if x > 0.

[6] Coffee is being poured into the mug shown in the figure at a constant rate (measured in volume per unit time). Sketch a rough graph
of the depth of the coffee in the mug as a function of time. Account for
the shape of the graph in terms of concavity. What is the significance
of the inflection point?

[7] Graph f (x) = x 3 5x 3 indicating intervals on which f is increasing/decreasing, concave upward/downward, inflection points, asymptotes, and intercepts if any.

[8] A piece of wire 10 m long is cut into two pieces. One piece is bent into a square and the other
is bent into an equilateral triangle. How should the wire be cut so that the total area enclosed is
(a) a maximum? (b) A minimum?
[9] Use Newtons method to find all roots of the equation correct to six decimal places. sin x = x2 2.
