5. Description of the region

Bulgaria:
We are glad to welcome you in one of the oldest countries in Europe, with more than 1300
years of history!

The Republic of Bulgaria is a member state of the European Union and is situated in
Southeast Europe. It borders on the Republic of Romania to the North, the Black Sea to the
East, the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Greece to the South and the Republic of
Macedonia and the Republic of Serbia to the West. The area is 110 993, 6 sq km. There are
almost 8 million inhabitants. The capital city is Sofia.

Bulgaria’s good geographical situation, beautiful and varied natural landscape, favourable
climate, wonderful folklore and unique culture make the country a desired and preferred spot
for visits, stays, holidays and tourism during all seasons of the year.

Koprivshtitsa:
Koprivshtitsa is one of the most beautiful towns in Western Bulgaria. It is situated at only 110
km from the capital Sofia.

The town is placed in a mountain area, in the picturesque valley of Topolnitsa river, just in the
heart of the mountain Sashtinska Sredna Gora (which means Real Middle Forest).

Located at 1030 m above sea-level, the town has continental mountain climate. The winter is
cold but sunny (- 4.0ºС in January, the coldest month), with thick blanket of snow. The
summer is cool and fresh (20ºС in August, the hottest month) because of the typical for this
season local northern draught coming from the high slopes of Stara Planina (Old Mountain)
through the Valley of Topolnitsa River.

Koprivshtitsa has rich and colorful history. The town was founded in 14th century, but its
importance increased in the years of the Bulgarian Revival (period of social and economical
development and formation of the national liberation movement; started in 18th century and
ended in 1878 with the official liberation of Bulgaria from the ottoman slavery). In the years
of the Revival Koprivshtitsa became main educational and revolutionary centre. On 20th of
April 1876 in Koprivshtitsa fired the first gun which put the beginning of the April liberation
uprising. Koprivshtitsa is a birth town of many patriotic Bulgarians, brought fame to the
country with their deed.

Today Koprivshtitsa is part of the One hundred national tourist destinations. The town is an
architectural and historical reserve; there are 6 museums – houses of famous writers and
revolutionaries as well as many other sightseeing.

The Festival
On every fifth year, since 1960, in the beginning of August, in Koprivshtitsa takes place the
National Folk and Art Festival. Its main purpose is to promote the unique Bulgarian folklore
heritage.

For three days Koprivshtitsa becomes the most colorful and interesting place in the country.
Hundreds of people from all over the world come to this small Bulgarian town because of this
event. The Festival gives a stage for different dance and music performances from all parts of
Bulgaria. Many craftsmen present wonderful hand made objects. The streets are full of people
dressed in traditional folklore costumes…
The words are not enough to describe this feeling! You must come and feel the remarkable
spirit of this little town!
