1. RBI keeps policy rates unchanged in 3rd bi-monthly monetary policy review
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its third bi-monthly monetary policy review for year 2016-17 has maintained
status quo in key policy interest rate.
It was last bi-monthly monetary policy review of RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan who will step down in
September 2016 after completing his term.
The policy interest rates were kept unchanged while maintaining an accommodative policy stance on basis of an
assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation in country.
The Reserve Bank of India kept the repo rate or the key policy rate unchanged at 6.5% due to hardening of
inflation. However, the central bank maintains that it is still in a accommodative mode.
RBI said risks to the inflation target of 5% for March 2017 continue to be on the upside.
The passage of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill augurs well for the growing political consensus for
economic reforms.
2. RBI asks banks to extend loans to women SHGs at 7% rate
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked banks to provide loans up to Rs 3 lakh at 7 per cent interest rate to Women
Self-Help Group (SHG).
This loan scheme must be provided under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM)-Aajeevika scheme
during 2015-16.
The revised guidelines on interest subvention scheme under NRLM have been issued after approval from the
Union Ministry of Rural Development.
Under this loan scheme, an interest subvention on credit up to Rs 3 lakhs at 7% per annum will be provided.
All women SHGs will be eligible for it.
However, SHG availing capital subsidy under Swarnjayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY) in their existing
credit outstanding will not be eligible for benefit under this scheme.
The funding for this subvention will be provided to the State Rural Livelihoods Missions (SRLMs) from the
allocation for NRLM.
3. RBI imposes penalty on four cooperative banks
The Reserve Bank has imposed penalties of up to Rs 5 lakh on four cooperative banks for violation of various
norms.
RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 5 lakh on The Cooperative City Bank, Guwahati, for flouting KYC
norms and non-adherence to requirements relating to identification and reporting of suspicious transactions.
A penalty of Rs 2 lakh has been imposed on Indapur Urban Cooperative Bank, Indapur, District Pune, for
violations of norms related to KYC/anti-money laundering and credit exposure norms on loans.

RBI imposed penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Shri Dadasaheb Gajmal Cooperative Bank, Pachora, District Jalgaon for
violation of norms relating to creation of floating charge on its assets without the prior permission.
In a separate statement, the central bank said it has imposed penalty of Rs 1 lakh on The Model Cooperative
Urban Bank, Hyderabad, Telangana for violation directives and guidelines on loans and advances to directors and
their relatives.

4 RBI imposes penalty on 2 Chhattisgarh cooperative banks


Reserve Bank imposed penalty on two cooperative banks in Chhattisgarh under the Banking Regulation Act,
1949.
The RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of five lakh each on Zila Sahakari Kendriya Bank Maryadit, Raipur,
and Raipur Urban Mercantile Cooperative Bank Limited.
Zila Sahakari Kendriya Bank Maryadit was penalised for violation of the directives/guidelines of the Central
Bank on 'Know Your Customer' norms.
Raipur Urban Mercantile Cooperative Bank Ltd faced action for violation of the directives on prohibition of grant
of loans and advances to own directors or their relatives or concerns in which they are interested.
5. RBI constitutes Tarun Ramadorai Committee on Household Finance
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a committee to look at the various facets of household finance in
India and to benchmark the countrys position vis--vis both peer countries and advanced countries.
The Committee will be chaired by Tarun Ramadorai, Professor of Financial Economics, University of Oxford.
The committee will benchmark the current depth of household financial markets in India vis-a-vis those in other
major world markets and identify areas of priority for growth and change and characterise and evaluate
households demands in financial markets for assets such as pensions as well as liabilities such as home loans
over the coming decade.
The panel will consider whether, how, and why the financial allocations of Indian households deviate from
desirable financial allocation and behaviour, such as why a large portion of household allocation goes to gold.
6. RBI launches portal to curb illegal money
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a website (sachet.rbi.org.in) to curb illegal and unauthorised
pooling of funds by unscrupulous firms.
The website was launched by RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
It will help people obtain information about entities allowed to collect deposits.
It facilitates filing, tracking of complaints relating to illegal and unauthorised pooling of funds by unscrupulous
firms.
It will provide information about whether any particular entity is registered with any regulator or is permitted to
accept deposits.
Help to enhance coordination among regulators and state government agencies to curb instances of unauthorised
acceptance of deposits by unscrupulous entities.
Incorporates regulations prescribed by all financial regulators that different entities have to follow.
'Sachet' also has a section for closed user group for State Level Coordination Committee (SLCCs) wherein they
could share market intelligence and other information about their activities as well as agenda and minutes of
meetings across the country in real time.
All states have SLCCs comprising of various regulators, including RBI, Securities and Exchange Board of India
(Sebi), National Housing Bank (NHB), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), Registrar of
Companies (ROC) and concerned state government departments, such as, home, finance, law and various police
authorities.

1. Unified Payments Interface introduced by banks

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was introduced on 25 August 2016 by four banks, namely Axis Bank, Union
Bank of India, Federal Bank and Bank of Maharashtra.
The app will allow customers to make payments via digital means.
The app went live for these banks after National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) issued letters to them
asking them to make the apps available on Google Play Store.
Apart from this, the UPI-enabled apps will be available for other 19-banks in next 2-3 working days.
UPI, a product of NPCI, will help move India towards a cashless economy.

2. JNPT signs ECB Agreement worth $400 Million with SBI and Development Bank of Singapore
Indias premier container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Navi Mumbai has signed 400 Million US
Dollar agreement with State Bank of India (SBI) and Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) for External
Commercial Borrowing (ECB).
The agreement was signed by JNPT officials in the presence of the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport
& Highways Nitin Gadkari in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
With this ECB Agreement, JNPT becomes the first major port in the country to take loans in dollars to improve
the infrastructure.
The ECB of 400 Million dollars will be primarily utilised for expansion of JNPTs existing road network
connecting to its port project.
3. Cabinet nod for Rs.27,000 cr. roads and railways projects
The Centre gave its green signal for investments worth more than Rs.27,000 crore in new highways and railway
lines across the country to boost economic growth.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved infrastructure projects worth Rs.27,328 crore for
expansion of railway lines in 11 states and development of 1,120 km national highways in five states.
The railway expansion programme includes nine projects involving 1,937 km of track construction at an
estimated cost of Rs.20,867 crore.
The projects include construction of second railway line between New Bongaigaon and Kamakhya in Assam.
4. Govt considering proposal to ban cash transactions above Rs 3 lakh
In its efforts to curb black money transactions, the government is considering the special investigation teams
(SIT) recommendation to ban cash transactions above Rs 3 lakh.
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairperson Rani Singh Nair said that the suggestion is part of the
committees recommendations to reduce usage of cash transactions in the economy.
The Income-Tax Department has already put a Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on cash transactions and has made
quoting PAN mandatory.
The Supreme Court-appointed SIT on black money had submitted its fifth report last month, recommending a
complete ban on cash transactions above Rs 3 lakh and imposition of an upper limit of Rs 15 lakh on cash holding
by an individual or a corporate.
5. Bharti launches Rs 560 crore projects under Namami Gange
Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti launched Rs 560 crore worth projects including those of
intercepting Sisamau drainage and river front development under the ambitious Namami Gange programme.
Ms. Bharti, accompanied by former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, laid foundation stones for intercepting
and diverting the Sisamau open drain and networking schemes, costing Rs 63 crore and Rs 397 crore respectively.
Besides, Rs 100 crore will be spent on river front development in Bithoor.
The government will also construct 14 ghats and five crematoria.
6. India pledges Rs 39.97 million for upgrading school in Nepal
India has pledged financial assistance worth Nepali Rs 39.97 million for the construction of a new building and a
hostel facility at a Sanskrit school in eastern Nepal.
A tripartite agreement between the Indian Embassy, the Local Development Officer, Ilam District, and Principal
of Shree Saptmai Gurukul Sanskrit Vidhyashram Secondary School was signed in this regard.

The project is being implemented through the Indian government's grant assistance under the small development
programme scheme as part of India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme.

7. Centre imposes $380 million additional penalty on RIL


Government has slapped an additional penalty of $380 million (around Rs.2,500 crore) on Reliance Industries and
its partners for producing less than targeted natural gas from eastern offshore KG-D6 fields.
With this, the total penalty, which is in form of disallowing recovery of cost incurred, for missing the target in
five fiscal years beginning April 1, 2010, now stands at a cumulative $2.76 billion.
8. SBI board approves merger of 5 associate banks, BMB with itself
The State Bank of Indias (SBIs) board of directors has approved merger of its five associate banks and
Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with itself.
These five subsidiaries are State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State
Bank of Travancore and Bharatiya Mahila Bank.
The board has finalised the share swap ratio for three of the listed subsidiaries and BMB.
It also approved merger of two unlisted associate banks State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Hyderabad with
it.
The merger will create a global-sized bank with assets worth over Rs 37 lakh crore.
It will make SBI one of the top 50 global financial powerhouses in the world.
9. India gives USD 1 million to Zimbabwe to deal with El Nino
India has extended a grant of USD one million to Zimbabwe, responding to an appeal by the African nation for
help to deal with severe drought caused by El Nino phenomenon.
External Affairs Ministry said Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe R Masakui handed over the grant to Dr Misheck
Sibanda, Chief Secretary to President Robert Mugabe.
India also said logistical modalities are being worked out for donating 500 metric tonnes of rice as part of the
second phase of assistance.
10. UBI launches USSD based mobile app for basic banking needs with NPCI
The Union Bank of India (UBI) has launch an Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) based *99#
mobile application for their customers for basic banking needs.
It was launched in partnership with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organisation for
all retail payments system in the country.
*99# mobile application can be downloaded in an android smartphone from the Google Play Store by the bank
customers.
It can be used even without any internet connection as it does not require any data and is available in 10
languages.
It provides basic banking facilities like checking account balance, sending money, Mobile PIN (MPIN)
management.
11. Rail Budget's 92-year-old journey set to end
Putting an end to a 92-year-old tradition of the colonial era, the railway Budget will be merged with the general
Budget from 2017-18 onwards.
The move will come as a relief to the national transporter, which, until now, has been reeling under an additional
burden of Rs 40,000 crore from higher salaries, following implementation of the 7th Pay Commission.
It also has to bear close to Rs Rs 35,000 crore of subsidy burden. If the merger goes through, the Railways will
get rid of the annual dividend it has to pay for gross budgetary support from the government.
The idea was recently mooted by a committee headed by NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy, as part of the
restructuring of the Railways.
The rail Budget has had a separate existence from the general Budget since 1924 when the British spun it off for a
better focus on Indias most important infrastructure network.

12. Syndicate Bank launches Project Ananya aimed at digital banking


Syndicate Bank has embarked on a large scale transformation program called "Project Ananya" that focuses on
improved customer service and offering latest in digital banking services.
The bank plans to transform 10 per cent of its branches to the new format in the next 6-12 months, it said in a
statement.
The first Ananya branch was opened by MD and CEO Arun Srivastava.
A completely operational account is available in less than 1 day with no additional visits to the branch and making
this one of the fastest account opening processes in the industry.
13. Union Cabinet approves liberalization of FDI norms for NBFCs
The Union Cabinet has approved liberalization of foreign investment norms for the non-banking finance
companies (NBFCs) to improve the ease of doing business.
Decision in this regard, Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Cabinet has approved Foreign investment in NBFCs can now come under the automatic route provided they are
regulated by any of the financial sector regulators.
Entities not regulated by any of the regulators (RBI, SEBI, PFRDA etc.)/government agencies will need approval
from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).
A NBFC is a financial institution that provides banking services without meeting the legal definition of a bank,
i.e. one that does not hold a banking license.
14. NABARD sanctions Rs 26.06 crore to Punjab
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) sanctioned Rs 26.06 crore to the Punjab
government.
The fund has been sanctioned for tackling water logging by constructing lift schemes in low-lying areas, village
ponds and other allied works, said an official release.
The project will reclaim 5,913 hectares of land in 87 villages of Muktsar and Fazilka districts.
Once the project is implemented, farmers will be able to cultivate crops in the previously waterlogged areas after
a long gap.
With this, the total sanctions to the Punjab government under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF),
since its inception, stood at Rs 7,826.17 crore.
15. BSE gets approval to establish International exchange at GIFT
Leading stock exchange BSE has got approval from the Corporate Affairs Ministry to establish BSE International
Exchange and BSE International Clearing Corporation at Gujarat International Finance Tec-city (GIFT).
The exchange had signed an MoU with GIFT SEZ Ltd in January 2015 to set up the two entities Indias first
International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
The exchange will provide platform for global securities listed on the international exchanges such as NYSE,
LSE, NASDAQ etc.
16. NPA of commercial banks increased by around 4%: Government
The Union Government has announced that the Non-Performing Assets (NPA) of commercial banks have
increased by around 4% in the last one year (March 2015 to March 2016).
It was announced by Union Minister of State for Finance (MoS) Santosh Gangwar in a written reply to the Rajya
Sabha.
The NPA of banks was 5.43 percent in March 2015 which has risen to 9.32 percent in March 2016.
The high incidences of NPAs are mainly related to power, road, steel, textiles and other sectors.
NPA amounts are related to 417 stalled infrastructure projects where public sector banks have invested is over
66478 crore rupees.
Union Government has taken several steps to revive these stalled projects.
Besides, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also issued guidelines for restructuring of loans.
NPAs (also called non-performing loans) are loans made by a bank or finance company on which repayments or
interest payments are not being made on time.

The loan is considered to be a NPA once the borrower fails to make interest or principal payments for 90 days.

17. Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws Amendment Bill, 2016
Parliament has passed Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws Amendment Bill, 2016.
It was first passed in Lok Sabha and later in Rajya Sabha.
The Bill seeks to strengthen the debt recovery laws, improve financial health of the banks and lead to ease of
doing business.
The Bill seeks to amend four laws: (i) Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of
Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act, 2002 (ii) Recovery of Debts due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act
(RDDBFI), 1993 (iii) Depositories Act, 1996 and (iv) Indian Stamp Act, 1899.
18. Banned Ponzi schemes not under regulatory purview: SEBI
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) told the Supreme Court that banned Ponzi schemes do not
fall under its regulatory purview.
This announcement was made after the apex court had asked government and SEBI, the stock market regulator
about measures undertaken by them to check the menace of ponzi schemes.
SC had asked for their response while hearing on PIL filed against menace of ponzi scheme running across the
country in various forms which robbed the poor and small investors of their hard-earned money.
The PIL was filed by NGO Humanity Salt Lake alleging inaction on the part of the government in regulating
chit funds (Ponzi schemes) which has resulted in multiple scams across country.
A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud where clients are promised a large profit in short term at little or no risk at
all.
19. Parliament passes The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014
The Parliament passed The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014 after it was unanimously passed
by the Lok Sabha by approved all the amendments made by Rajya Sabha.
The bill now will go states (15 out of total 29 states) for approval as per Article 368 of Constitution as it
constitutional amendment bill dealing with changes in the features of fiscal federalism.
The passage of bill will pave the way for the roll out of Goods and Services Tax (GST) i.e. uniform taxation
regime across the country.
GST is considered as great step towards transformation and transparency in tax regime.
It will bring freedom from tax terrorism as it will be levied on consumption rather than production.
GST will also benefit states which are considered backward states and also address the problem of imbalanced
development.
It will help to curtail black money as traders will be compelled to give proper bills.
20. HDFC ERGO launches political risk insurance policy
HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company has launched political risk insurance policy, whereby companies
operating internationally will be protected against the adverse effects of arbitrary government actions and their
assets and/or investments will be insured against expropriation.
While covering businesses against political violence, the policy will also protect businesses against unfavourable
currency inconvertibility.
The policy is designed to protect investors investments in overseas markets against unpredictable losses due to
specified political perils such as expropriatory acts, selective discrimination, forced abandonment, forced
divestiture, political violence and currency inconvertibility.
Political risk insurance is available to investors, lenders, contractors, exporters, and other similar entities for
safeguarding their foreign assets or investments.
21. Union Govt fixes an inflation target of 4 percent for five years
The Union Govt has set an inflation target of four per cent for the next five years i.e. till March 31, 2021.
In this regard, Union Government will soon set-up Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to adhere to the target till
March 31, 2021.

This target was fixed after the Union Government and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had reached an agreement on
a monetary policy framework.
The framework had had set the inflation target at four per cent, plus or minus two per cent. However, there was no
legal backing to it.
Inflation targeting is a monetary policy in which a central bank estimates and makes public a projected or target
inflation rate.

22. eSignDesk: Aadhar-linked eSignature facility launched


Aadhar-linked eSignature facility dubbed as eSignDesk was launched by LegalDesk, a Bengaluru based start-up
in the online legal documentation business.
eSignDesk based on Aadhaar platform it is actually an initiative of the Union Government aimed at allowing all
citizens (with Aadhaar) to remotely sign any document.
eSignDesk is the instant signing feature.
It saves both time and money and also provides security as nobody can forge this signature unlike wet signatures.
The users of this facility need to have a registered mobile number associated with the Aadhaar card.
It also deters fraud and ensures that the content of the document also cannot be tampered or replicated (forged).
The documents signed electronically using it will be legally valid in the country.
23. UD Min approves investment of Rs 4404 cr to 8 states, UTs
In a bid to improve basic urban infrastructure in eight states and Union Territories, the government approved an
investment of Rs 4,404 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Out of this, the central assistance to would be to the tune of Rs 2,085 crore.
An inter-ministerial Apex Committee, chaired by Urban Development Secretary Rajiv Gauba, has approved the
State Level Annual Action Plans (SAAP) of these eight states/UTs, it said.
The government has increased the grant, for improvement in drainage network in urban areas, from Rs 281 crore
in last fiscal to Rs 759 crore this year.
Under AMRUT, states/UTs have proposed a total investment of Rs 1,146 crore in improving drainage network in
urban areas.
The amount of Rs 4,404 crore approved would be used for augmenting water supply, sewerage networks,
drainage, urban transport and public and green spaces in urban areas in these areas.
States and UTs for which investment approved include Karnataka (Rs 1,625 crore), Andhra Pradesh (Rs 877
crore), Bihar (Rs 775 crore), Telangana (Rs 555 crore), Haryana (Rs 525 crore), Nagaland (Rs 40 crore), Dadra
and Nagar Haveli (Rs 3.70 crore) and Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Rs 3.18 crore).
Total central assistance to be provided to them would be Rs 2,085 crore--Karnataka Rs 772 crore, Bihar Rs 388
crore, Andhra Pradesh Rs 352 crore, Telangana Rs 277 crore, Haryana Rs 255 crore and Nagaland Rs 36 crore.
24. Corp Bank launches insurance scheme
Jai Kumar Garg, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Corporation Bank, launched group credit life
insurance scheme of LIC of India in Mangaluru.
The scheme is available to customers in the age group of 18-60 years who have taken term loan from the bank.
It is a single premium group term insurance plan offering insurance cover to the loan taken by the customer, in the
event of death of the borrower.
The scheme covers various term loans, including retail loans and loans to MSME and agriculture.
25. Japan cabinet approves economic stimulus package worth $275 billion
Japans cabinet has approved an economic stimulus package worth 275 billion dollars in attempt kick-start the
economy and boost growth of the worlds third-largest economy.
Decision in this regard was taken in the Japanese Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in
Tokyo.
The Japanese government expects that this package will boost gross domestic product (GDP) by 1.3%.
It aims at tackling deflation and strengthening the national economy of Japan.

It includes increase expenditure for the national and local governments as well as significant investments in the
countrys infrastructure.

26. Union Govt caps prices of 24 essential drugs


The Union Govt has capped the prices of 24 essential drugs used for treatment of cancer, HIV, bacterial
infections, anxiety and cardiac conditions.
In this regard, the Drug pricing regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has issued an order.
It revised ceiling prices of 24 scheduled formulations of schedule-I under Drugs (Price Control) Amendment
Order, 2016.
With this cost of these 24 essential drugs has been reduced by an average of around 25 per cent.
Besides, NPPA also capped the retail price of 31 formulations under Drug Prices Control Order (DPCO), 2013.
27. ICICI Bank ties up with Apollo India to form ARC
ICICI Bank has inked an MoU with Apollo India Credit Opportunity Management LLC and AION Capital
Management to set up an asset reconstruction company.
The MoU is subject to regulatory approvals, acquisition of debt exposures from lenders and equity stakes in
companies.
The collaboration seeks to streamline the operations of borrowers, facilitate deleveraging and arrange additional
funding on a case-by-case basis.
The motive is to revitalise distressed assets and maximise their economic value.
28. Central body approves Rs 400 crore for Ganga rejuvenation projects
A high-level panel of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) approved various projects worth
approximately Rs 400 crore for development of ghats (river fronts) and crematoria at different places along the
river Ganga from Uttarakhand to West Bengal under the Centres ambitious Namami Gange programme.
The projects, approved by the empowered steering committee of the NGRBA, include development of ghats and
crematoria in the stretch from Rudraprayag to Guptkashi in Uttarakhand; Kanpur, Allahabad, Bithoor and Bijnor
(on Ramganga) in Uttar Pradesh; Kahalgaon in Bihar; Sahibganj and Rajmahal in Jharkhand and Bhatpara and
Naihati in West Bengal.
The NGRBA is a key central body which monitors planning and execution of all schemes of Ganga rejuvenation
in coordination with five river basin states Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
The projects were cleared under the Namami Gange programme for which the central government had last year
sanctioned Rs 20,000 crore for five years during the 2015-2020 period.
29. Parliament passes Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Bill, 2016
The Parliament has passed the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Bill after it was unanimously
approved by Rajya Sabha.
The comprehensive amendment bill seeks to amend and strengthen Benami Transaction (Prohibition) Act, 1988 in
terms of legal and administrative procedure to curb domestic black money.
The Bill seeks to (i) Amend the definition of benami transactions to widen the scope for legal action (ii) Specify
penalties for entering into benami transactions and (iii) establish adjudicating authorities and Appellate Tribunal
to deal with benami transactions.
It add other transactions which qualify as benami, such as property transactions where: (i) the owner is not aware
or denies knowledge of the ownership of the property, (ii) transaction is made in a fictitious name (iii) person
providing the consideration for the property is not traceable.
The Bill also adds provisions to establish an Appellate Tribunal in order to hear appeals against any orders passed
by the Adjudicating Authority.

31. SBI offers new loan scheme for govt. employees


State Bank of India (SBI) has unveiled a new home loan scheme targeted at beneficiaries of the seventh pay
commission recommendations.
The loan can be repaid till the beneficiary attains 75 years of age as against 70 years offered under other schemes.
Defence personnel are also eligible to apply.
SBI has also waived the entire processing fee for home loans under this scheme.
The launch of SBI Privilege Home Loan and SBI Shaurya Home Loan products is timed with the notification
of 7th Pay Commission recommendations by the government.
According to the latest data from Reserve bank of India, home loans recorded a year-on-year growth of 18 per
cent so far.
32. IRCTC's app ties-up exclusively with Mobikwik for e-cash payments
Mobile payments company MobiKwik and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have
announced an exclusive partnership, wherein MobiKwik will power e-cash payments on IRCTC's e-catering app,
Food on Track.
The app allows passengers to book and get food from their preferred restaurants, delivered right at their train
coaches.
MobiKwik is also powering payments for IRCTC Connect, which allows users to book train tickets instantly.
33. Oracle India joins SBI to foster digital skills initiative
Global software and Cloud major Oracle India announced a corporate citizenship collaboration with StateBank of
India (SBI) and launched the 'D-Change' programme which will support education and learning, women's
empowerment and rural skills development in the country.
The initiative will merge SBI's financial expertise and expansive reach with Oracle's technology leadership to help
local communities drive substantial change and develop a skilled economy.
As part of the programme, Oracle and SBI volunteers will help enhance IT literacy among high school students,
teachers and parents from over 100 SBI-supported government schools through an initiative called "Digital
Kushalta ki Aur."
As the first project to be launched under "D-Change," it will be initiated at Rotary Bangalore Vidyalaya in
Bengaluru and Mandal Parishad High School, Kondapur in Hyderabad on August 6.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval to proposal for dissolution of Central Inland Water Transport
Corporation Limited (CIWTC).
CIWTC was incorporated in February 1967 as Public Sector Undertaking under the Companies Act 1956 by the
Central Government.
It was under the administrative control of Ministry of Shipping (MOS).
2. PM Modi inaugurates first phase of SAUNI project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30 Aug inaugurated the first phase of SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran
for Irrigation) project in which nearly 10 dams and reservoirs of Rajkot, Jamnagar and Morbi would be filled up
with the water of Narmada river.
The Rs 12,000 crore project is considered to be an ambitious one for Modi, who had announced the project in
2012 when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, to fill up nearly 115 dams of Saurashtra region which faces

Offenses (POCSO) e-box, in New Delhi.
It was launched by the Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi in New Delhi.
POCSO e-box is an online complaint management system for easy and direct reporting of sexual offences against
children and timely action against offenders under POCSO Act, 2012.
It is an initiative of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), for Direct online Reporting of
Child Sexual Abuse.
The e-Box is incorporated in the home page of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)
website http://ncpcr.gov.in/.
The user can lodge a complaint by pressing the arrow on this page which navigates to another page where he/ she

4. Union Govt launches Accessible E-Library Sugamya Pustakalaya
The Union Govt has launched Accessible E-Library Sugamya Pustakalaya for Divyang under Prime Ministers
Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan.

11. India Post Payments Bank Limited incorporated
The India Post Payments Bank Limited (IPPBL) has received the Certificate of Incorporation from the Registrar
of Companies, Ministry of Corporate Affairs under the Companies Act 2013.
IPPBL would be the first PSU under the Department of Posts (DoP).
With the incorporation, the Board of the IPPBL is likely to be constituted soon.
The incorporation of the IPPB Ltd paves the way for it to begin hiring of banking professionals to set up the bank

The DoP is expected to complete the roll out of its branches all over the country by September 2017.

It marks shift from present manual auction process to electronic mode for determining the lowest bidder for

The e-KYC seeks to make the online process of application and authentication faster and simpler for subscribers.
Customer through their Aadhaar number and biometrics will online authorise UIDAI to provide demographic
details.
The details will include name, address, date of birth and gender, along with the digitally-signed photograph, to the
mobile operator.
15. Akshardham founder Pramukh Swami passes away
Pramukh Swami, the 95-year-old founder of Akshardham temples and a saint of the Swaminarayan sect, passed
away after prolonged illness at the Sarangpur temple.
He was the president of the Bochasanvasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha (BAPS), a sub-sect of the Swaminarayan
sect, which during his tenure expanded globally, with over 3000 temples built in five decades worldwide.
Akshardham temples built in Gandhinagar and New Delhi are considered the largest Hindu temple complexes in
India.
The Swaminarayan temple in Atlanta, built by the BAPS, is regarded as the largest Hindu temple outside the
Indian subcontinent.
16. Union Govt constitutes National Committee on Trade Facilitation
The Union Govt has constituted a National Committee on Trade Facilitation (NCTF) to develop the pan-India
road map for trade facilitation.
It has been constituted in line with the World Trade Organisation (WTOs) Trade Facilitation Agreement (FTA),
which India also has ratified.
The NCTF will inter ministerial body on trade facilitation and will be headed by Pradeep Kumar Sinha, who is
the Cabinet Secretary of India.
17. PM Modi announces 20% hike in freedom fighters pensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 Aug announced a 20 percent hike in the pension of freedom fighters.

Pension for our freedom fighters will be increased by 20 percent. So those who are receiving Rs 25,000 will now
get Rs 30,000," Modi said in his address to the nation from the Red Fort on the 70th Independence Day.

20. Indias first Nuclear Suppliers Insurance Policy unveiled by INIP


Indias first Nuclear Suppliers insurance policy for Right to Recourse was unveiled by India Nuclear Insurance
Pool (INIP).
The policy was unveiled by Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman Sekhar Basu in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
INIP is the 27th global nuclear insurance pool which was launched by state run General Insurance Corporation of
India (GIC Re), in association with non-life insurance companies.
New India Assurance Co (NIAC) and INIP will issue the policy and administer the claims on behalf of the pool.
Earlier NIAC had issued a policy for the operators of nuclear power plants under INIP by underwriting premium
to the tune of Rs 100 crore.
21. Rajya Sabha passes Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Bill, 2016
The Rajya Sabha has passed the Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to raise maternity leave for working
women from 12 weeks to 26 weeks for two surviving children.
The Bill seeks to amend the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. The law protects the employment of women during the
time of her maternity and entitles her of a maternity benefit.
The Bill aims at increasing womens participation in the workforce which is decreasing day-by-day.
22. MP, Puducherry plug into UDAY scheme
Madhya Pradesh and the Union Territory of Puducherry have signed the memorandum of understanding with the
Ministry of Power to join the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana.
With these two MoUs being signed, the total number of states and union territories who are a part of UDAY has
risen to 16, the Power Ministry said in a statement.
The combined debt of the electricity distribution utilities which will be restructured stands at 2.51 lakh crore as
on September 30, 2015.
23. CCEA gives nod to development of AUSC technology for thermal power plants
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CEEA) has given its approval for the development of Advanced
Ultra Super Critical (AUSC) technology for thermal power plants.
In this regard, CCEA has approved a one-time grant of 900 crore rupees spread over three years for an R&D
project for the development of AUSC technology for thermal power plants.
The project was proposed by a consortium of three government entities to reduce coal consumption as well as
Carbon di-oxide (CO2) emission.
They are Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Indira Gandhi Centre of Atomic Research (IGCAR) National
Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda.
The Bill provides, every person has right to access mental health care and treatment from services run or funded
by the government.

to their medical records free legal services etc.
It also has a provision to protect, promote and fulfill the rights of such persons during delivery of mental health

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released a theme song for Tiranga Yatra to be organised to mark 70 years of
Independence Day.
The theme song "70 Saal Azadi Yaad Karo Kurbani" has been composed by Dr. Ghazal Srinivas.
Tiranga Yatra will be organised from 16 to 23 August 2016 across the country to mark 70 years of Independence.

28. PM Modi Launches PMO App At MyGov Anniversary Event

It also aims to capture progress towards achieving Open Defecation Free status.
Cities will be ranked based on the reports by urban local bodies on the progress made towards construction of

30. Union Govt launches MAA, nation-wide breast feeding programme


The Union Govt has launched MAA (Mothers Absolute Affection), a nation-wide breast feeding programme.
It was launched by Union Health Minister & Family Welfare J P Nadda along with Bollywood actress Madhuri
Dixit who is brand ambassador of this campaign.
MAA is an intensified programme of the Union Health Ministry that aims to enhance optimal breastfeeding
practices in the country.
It seeks to create an enabling environment to ensure that mothers, husbands and families receive adequate
information and support for promotion of breastfeeding.
It has been launched in an attempt to bring undiluted focus on promotion of breastfeeding and provision of
counselling services for supporting breastfeeding through health systems.
The programme has been named MAA to signify the support a lactating mother requires from family members
and at health facilities to breastfeed successfully.
The chief components of the Programme are (i) Community awareness generation, (ii) Strengthening inter
personal communication through ASHA, (iii) Skilled support for breastfeeding at Delivery points in Public health
facilities, and (iv) Monitoring and Award/recognition.
The Union Health Ministry has allocated 30 crore rupees for the Programme and 4.3 lakh rupees for each district
for implementing the various activities under MAA programme.
31. Union Govt aims to roll out GST from April 1, 2017
The Union Govt has set the ambitious target to roll out of the Goods and Services Tax, (GST) from 1st April
2017.
It was announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley after unveiling a detailed road map for GST
implementation.
This announcement was made after Rajya Sabha had passedThe Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill,
2014.
There will be two components of GST Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) in order to comply with
federal structure of India.
32. Parliament passes The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014
Both the houses of the Parliament have unanimously passed The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill,
2014 to introduce the goods and services tax (GST).
The Rajya Sabha has passed the bill in the current monsoon session.
With this passage of bill, India took giant step in structural indirect taxation reform and paved way for the concept
of one nation, one tax.
Earlier the Bill was passed in Lok Sabha in May 2015. Later, the bill was passed again by the Lok Sabha on 8
August 2016.
However, now the Bill will again go back to the Lok Sabha to incorporate the few amendments approved by the
Rajya Sabha.
The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014 will enter into the statute book as The Constitution (101st
Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Bill, 2016.
The bill was first passed in Lok Sabha in July 2016 and later in Rajya Sabha in August 2016.

The Bill seeks to establish the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Andhra Pradesh as an institute of national

34. NTPC commissions NP Kunta power project


NTPC Ltd has commissioned a 50 MW (1X50 MW) capacity solar photovoltaic power project of NP Kunta Ultra
Mega Solar Power Project Stage-I at Anantapuramu in Andhra Pradesh on July 29.
With this, the installed capacity of NP Kunta Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Stage-I coming up at at
Anantapuramu has touched 250 MW and that of NTPC Group now stands at 47,228 MW.
35. Parliament passes Indian Medical Council (Amendment Bill), 2016
The Parliament has passed Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to conduct of uniform entrance
examination for admission to all medical educational institutions.
The bill seeks to replace the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016 and its provisions will come
in to force retrospectively from May 24, 2016.

NEWS (STATES)
1. NABARD sanctions Rs 204.67 cr for Haryana
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a loan of Rs 204.67 crore
for Haryana under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund for projects including a 10 mw solar plant at Panipat
thermal power station.
Out of the total loan, Rs 147.18 crore has been sanctioned to the state government under the 22nd tranche of the
fund for 2016-17 for construction of three rural bridges, construction and upgradation of 26 rural roads in 10
districts, and Rs 57.49 crore for the solar plant.
2. Gujarat becomes first state to distribute 2 crore LED bulbs under UJALA scheme
Gujarat has become the first state in the country to distribute two crore LED bulbs under the Centres UJALA
(Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme.
The state has reached the milestone in just 96 days and over 42 lakh households have already benefited from the
scheme.
State-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the administration of the Union Power Ministry had
distributed about 2 lakh bulbs daily in Gujarat.
The distribution of 2 crore LED bulbs has led to an annual energy savings of 259 crore kwh, (Kilowatt Hour).
It is equivalent to lighting up 5 lakh Indian homes for an entire year.
3. GST is now up for President nod
The Assam Assembly on 12 August 2016 passed a resolution to become the first state to ratify The Constitution
(122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014.
The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 8 August 2016 and by the Rajya Sabha on 3 August 2016.
The GST will have two components keeping in mind the federal structure of India: the Central GST (CGST) and
the State GST (SGST).
For goods and services that pass through several states, or imports, the Centre will levy another tax, the Integrated
GST (IGST).

The Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, 2014 on GST was passed by Parliament recently and it needs to be
ratified by at least 15 state legislatures before the President can notify the GST Council which will decide the new
tax rate and other issues.

4. Velankanni festival begins


The 11-day annual feast of Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health, popularly called Annai Velankanni Matha,
began in Velankanni on 29 Aug with a huge procession and hoisting of the holy flag by Most Rev. M. Devadass
Ambrose, Bishop of Thanjavur.
Pilgrims from various parts of the country witnessed the flag hoisting ceremony. Rev.Fr.A.M.Prabakar, Rector,
and other priests of the shrine were present.
5. Cyient launches digital centres in Telangana
As it celebrates the Silver Jubilee of its formation, engineering services firm Cyient has launched 54 Cyient
Digital Centres (CDC) in Ranga Reddy district.
Being set up as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility plan, the CDCs will support schools in the
Serilingampally mandal.
Each of these centres will have a computer laboratory and digital library.
It will act as a National Digital Literacy Mission centre, too.
The centres will have about 1,000 computers, allowing the students to learn the basics in digital education.
6. India's first textile university to come up at Surat
Gujarat govt is planning to set up India's first textile university at Surat with an investment of about Rs 800 crore Rs 900 crore.
The textile industry will support the government in the endeavour.
The state government will fund about Rs 800-900 crore for the university, which is expected to get operational in
the next one and a half years.
7. Union Govt inaugurates IIT in Dharwad
The Union Human Resource Ministry has formally launched Indian Institute of Techonogy (IIT) Dharwad in
Karnataka.
It was launched by Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash.
IIT-Dharwad is located at Walmi centre on the Dharwads outskirts till its permanent campus is built.

8. Mehbooba Mufti launches UJALA scheme in Jammu and Kashmir


Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti launched the central government's UJALA scheme in the
state with the distribution of LED bulbs among people.
The National LED programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015.
Under this scheme consumer can buy five LED bulbs at the rate of Rs 20 each by showing monthly electricity
bills or ID cards.
In case of purchase of more than five bulbs, consumers need to pay Rs 95 per bulb.

The 46,000-crore rupee ambitious project will create state-of-the art road connectivity within a period of three
years and give a fillip to investment in the state.
Mumbai-Nagpur Super Communication Expressway project will be implemented by Maharashtra State Road
Development Corporation (MSRDC).
12. 22nd edition of Delhi Book Fair begins
The 22nd edition of the Delhi Book Fair (DBF) began on 27 Aug at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
The nine day event will conclude on 4th of September 2016.

13. South India's First Children's Court Inaugurated In Hyderabad
Giving a push to fast disposal of cases related to children, south India's first Children's Court was inaugurated in

After Goa and Delhi, Telangana has become the third state to have a child friendly court and sixth in the country
with features like separate waiting rooms for children and a video camera trial for the accused, mandated under
the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act-2012.
The 'child friendly' courtroom was jointly inaugurated at the Nampally Criminal Courts Complex in Hyderabad
by Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan of High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad and Director General of

16. Maharashtra, Telangana ink pact for 3 irrigation projects
Maharashtra and Telangana have signed agreement for three irrigation projects to be constructed on Godavari,

17. Maharashtra becomes first state to sign MoU with Centre, AAI to develop 10 airports under RCS
Maharashtra Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry
and Airports Authority of India (AAI) to develop 10 airports as part of the Centres Regional Connectivity
Scheme.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Maharashtra
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
With this Maharashtra became first state in the country to formally to provide the concessions required from the
State Governments in the Regional Connectivity Scheme.
These 10 airports include Shirdi, Gondia, Amravati, Jalgaon, Nashik, Solapur, Nanded, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and

18. Andhra Pradesh becomes first state to launch DNA profiling of criminals
Andhra Pradesh became the first state in the country to launch DNA Index System (DIS) for DNA
(Deoxyribonucleac acid) profiling of criminals.
The system uses the latest DNA technology tool (also known as RapidHIT DNA System) developed by IntegenX
of United States.
The DNA Index System (DIS) allows generation of DNA profiles from live samples like buccal swabs, saliva and
blood stains etc.
It creates DNA profiles within 90 to 120 minutes compared to currently available technologies which take at least
two days or more.
19. TN CM announces Rs. 310 crore package for Anna University
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced various projects worth Rs. 310 crore for Anna University to improve
engineering education in the State.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, she said a cloud computing centre at a cost of Rs. 160 crore would
come up at the university.
It will offer various services to teachers, researchers and students of the university and affiliated colleges.
The government will also set up an automobile technology centre at the university to study ways to reduce
emission of carbon dioxide as Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of automobile and spare parts manufacturing. The
allocation for the project is Rs. 50 crore.

20. Haryana honours 'daughter' Sakshi Malik


Wrestler Sakshi Malik, who broke India's medal drought at the Rio Games by winning a bronze on August 18,
arrived in New Delhi on 24 Aug.
After arriving at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Ms. Malik stopped at Mundka village in Delhi, before

22. Maharashtra becomes first state to draft law for internal security
Maharashtra became the first state in the country to draft its own internal security legislation The Maharashtra
Protection of Internal Security Act (MPISA), 2016.

23. Gymnothorax indicus, new species of eel found in Bay of Bengal
Scientists have discovered Gymnothorax indicus (proposed name Indian unpatterened moray), a new species of
eel (a snake-like fish) in the northern Bay of Bengal region along the West Bengal coast.
It was discovered after it was collected in a trawl net by fishermen in northern Bay of Bengal, about 70 km off the
coast.
The ell species Gymnothorax indicus is slender-bodied.
It was found at a depth of 35 metres in the sea. It is about one feet-long and edible.
It has 194 vertebrae.
24. AP announces Rs. 3 cr cash award, Group I cadre job for Sindhu
The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet today decided to felicitate the Olympic badminton star PV Sindhu with Rs. 3 crore
reward in cash, a 1,000 sq yard site in the new capital city of Amaravati and a Group I cadre job in the State.
The State Cabinet, chaired by the Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, while lauding the great effort of Sindhu
and her contribution to sports, has decided to award the Olympic Silver medallist.
The Cabinet also approved a Rs. 50 lakh cash reward to Pullela Gopichand, the former badminton star and coach
of Sindhu.
In addition, it has decided to allot land if Gopichand desires to set up a badminton academy in AP on the lines of
one in Hyderabad.

BRICS Women Parliamentarians forum has unanimously passed the Jaipur Declaration on the concluding day of

26. U.P. to confer Rani Laxmi Bai award on Sakshi Malik


The Uttar Pradesh government announced to honour Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik who won a bronze at the Rio
Olympic Games with the prestigious Rani Laxmi Bai Award.

28. ICICI Bank unveils new smart keys mobile app
To make mobile payments easier, ICICI Bank has launched a payment service using a smartphone keyboard
named iMobile SmartKeys.
Users will be able to make quick and secure payments on any mobile application, including chat, messenger,
email, games or search browser, without having to exit their current application on their smartphone.
This reduces the time taken by customers having to switch tabs or applications within their smartphone to access
the banks application iMobile.
This solution was developed by one of the winners of the banks app developing competition.
Customers can transfer money to their registered beneficiaries, pay their utility bills and recharge their mobile
numbers.
29. Over 10,000-Year-Old Camping Site Discovered in Ladakh
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has discovered an ancient camping site dating 8500 BC in Ladakh in
Jammu and Kashmir, indicating humans were camping in the area 10,500 years ago.
The site was unearthed at 14,000 feet above the sea level on the way from Saser La to Ladakh.
30. Assam passes Assam Amusements and Betting Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2016
The Assam Assembly has passed the Assam Amusements and Betting Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to give a
fillip to the local film industry by reducing the service charge of cinema tickets.
However, the state government has raised the entertainment tax on cinema tickets by up to ten percentile points.
The bill proposes to fix the service charge at a maximum of Rs 12 per ticket, which is as high as Rs 40 at present.
Raised the government tax to 30 per cent on service charge from the earlier 20 per cent.
31. U.P. Cabinet approves metro rail project for Allahabad
The Uttar Pradesh government approved a Metro Rail project for Allahabad.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Work is already underway on the Metro Rail in Lucknow and the Detailed Project Report for Varanasi and
Kanpur have already been approved.
32. Telangana gets highest gallantry medals in country
Telangana State has received the highest number of gallantry medals for police personnel in the country on the

Odia language will be used as the official language in all government offices in Odisha from Aug 16,

35. Tata Power Solar commissions 100 MW project for NTPC


Tata Power Solar, one of the countrys largest integrated solar companies, announced that it had successfully
commissioned a 100 MW solar project for NTPC in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
This is the biggest solar project commissioned using domestically manufactured solar cells and modules, the
company said in a release.
The plant is expected to generate nearly 160 million kWh of energy per year and help offset approximately
110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in its first year of operation.
36. TN hikes pension for freedom fighters
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced a hike in pension for freedom fighters from Rs. 11,000 to Rs.
12,000 and further their family pension from Rs. 5,500 to Rs. 6,000.
The special pension given to heirs of freedom fighters has also been hiked from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 6,000.
37. Maharashtra relaunches scheme to improve girl child ratio
In order to achieve its objective of improving the skewed girl child ratio in Maharashtra, the state government
relaunched its Majhi Kanya Bhagyashri scheme.
The scheme was relaunched at all district headquarters with the guardian ministers handing over certificates of
encouragement to couples, who have registered under the scheme.
In April last year, the government had launched this scheme in place of the Sukanya scheme, initiated by the
previous Congress-NCP government in the state.
This relaunched initiative is a mix of Sukanya scheme and the Centres Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme
introduced last year.

39. Union Minister launches clean cooking fuel scheme for BPL women in West Bengal
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Pradhan Mantri
Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which is a scheme to provide clean cooking fuel to the women belonging to the 'Below
Poverty Line' (BPL) households across the country.
S S. Ahluwalia, Minister of State - Parliamentary Affairs, Agriculture and Farmer Welfare; Babul Supriyo Minister of State, Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises; and Dilip Ghosh, MLA West Bengal President of BJP
were present at the launch.
As a symbolic launch of the Pradhan Mantri UjjwalaYojana (PMUY), 20 women from Below Poverty Line (BPL)
families were handed over connections.
Finance Minister has budgeted Rs. 2,000 Crore to provide assistance to 1.5 crore LPG connections for BPL
households during the financial year 2016-17.
40. Indias first facility to produce nickel launched by HCL in Jharkhand
Indias first facility to produce nickel was launched by the Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) at its Indian Copper
Complex (ICC) at Ghatshila in Jharkhand.
The new facility Nickel, Copper and Acid Recovery Plant will be first facility in India to produce nickel metal
of London Metal Exchange (LME) grade from primary resource.
Initially, the capacity of the plant is poised to be 50 tonnes per annum, given the current production rate from the
Surda mines.

After inking an MoU with the A.P. government in March, apex IT industry body National Association of
Software and Services (Nasscom) has launched operations of its startup warehouse at Sunrise Startup Village at
Rushikonda in A.P.
This is the first Nasscom Startup Warehouse in A.P. the ninth warehouse under its 10,000 startup initiative.
The warehouses provide affordable co-working space with incubation for six months.
44. Indias first BIO-CNG plant inaugurated in Pune
Indias first ever BIO-CNG plant producing CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) from agricultural residue was
inaugurated in Pune, Maharashtra.
It was jointly inaugurated by Union Minister of surface Transport Nitin Gadkari and Union Defence Minister
Manohar Parrikar.
The plant was commissioned by Pune-based Primove Engineering Private Limited.
It has been set up as a Proof of Concept (PoC) which can be replicated elsewhere.
45. SC lifts ban on registration of High-end Diesel cars and SUVs in Delhi and NCR
The Supreme Court of India has lifted the ban on registration of high-end diesel cars and SUVs having engine
capacity of 2000 cc and above in Delhi and NCR.
Ruling in this regard was given by SC bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur on record the affidavits filed by
some car makers and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
The petitioners had offered to deposit one per cent of the price of the vehicles as Environment Protection Charge
(EPC) before the registration of such vehicles.
46. Nagaland govt to grant 33% reservation to women in Urban Local Bodies
The Nagaland Govt decided to grant 33 percent reservation to women in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting headed by the Chief Minister TR Zeliang, held in Kohima.
Elections to the state ULBs have been pending for several years as the tenure of the first municipal bodies came to
an end between December 2009 and March 2010.
47. Odisha govt to make Aadhar Card mandatory for procurement of paddy
In a bid to maintain transparency and ensure quick payment of dues, the Odisha govt has decided to make Aadhar
Card mandatory for procurement of paddy in the state.
Aadhaar cards of farmers linked to the cooperative banks and the peasants accounts for online transfer of cost of
paddy to be procured from the coming kharif season.
Both farmers and sharecroppers would link their Aadhaar cards for online payment of paddy cost.

49. Assam Govt launches Rhino horn verification process


The Assam Govt has launched Rhino horn verification process for verifying rhino horns stored in various
treasuries of Assam since 1980.
The process will be responsible for verifying the genuineness of the rhino horns, which were recovered since
1980s and stored in various treasuries.
The process of verification will be conducted by 12-member Rhino Horn Verification Committee which was
recently instituted by state government.
The committee is headed by former forest officer and former Assam State Information Commissioner, Mohan
Chandra Malakar.
50. Touch-and-feel garden for visually impaired
A first-of-its-kind touch and feel garden for the visually impaired people in the country was inaugurated near
Calicut University campus by Kerala Assembly Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan.
The garden has nearly 70 aromatic, medicinal and herbal plants brought from various parts the country.
The visually impaired will get an opportunity to study the plants not only by touching, feeling and smelling them,
but also getting information about them through audio inputs.
The garden is arranged in such a way that the visually impaired can move around freely.
It has been constructed in a year with an aid of Rs 17 lakh from the Environment Ministry.
51. Airtel launches 4G services in Kharagpur
Bharti Airtel, the countrys largest telecommunication services provider, has launched 4G services in Kharagpur.
Kharagpur is the second city in West Bengal to have 4G services.
Airtel 4G is available to customers across a range of smart devices, including mobile phones (SIM cards), 4G
hotspots and dongles.
It has been rolled out using dual spectrum bands of 2,300 MHz (TD LTE) and 1,800 MHz (FD LTE).
Airtel had launched the countrys first 4G network in Kolkata in April 2012.
52. Bihar agrees to implement Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana
After a slugfest over naming of the Centre's crop insurance policy, the Bihar government agreed to implement the
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana on an experimental basis in the kharif season.
The state government has decided to implement the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in the state
keeping in mind the sentiments of cooperative federalism.
The crop insurance scheme will be implemented in its present form for the kharif season on an experimental basis.
53. Womens safety app I Feel Safe launched in DU
A mobile application I Feel Safe aimed at helping women ensure their safety in the national capital was
launched at Delhi University.

56. First Solar commissions 130 MW of solar power plants in AP, Telangana
First Solar Power India, the local subsidiary of the Nasdaq-listed First Solar, announced the commercial operation
of 80 MW and 50 MW solar power plants in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The projects are part of the 260 MW project portfolio owned by First Solar in India.
The two plants will collectively produce enough energy to power approximately 2,27,500 average homes in India
and will displace 204 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
57. Lawrencedale Agro inks pact with AP for development of horticulture
Lawrencedale Agro Processing, a fresh produce supply chain company, has entered into an agreement with
Andhra Pradesh for the development of horticulture crops.
This agreement is part of the AP governments pivotal Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) Policy for the

63. Gujarat HC quashes 10% quota for economically backward classes
The Gujarat high court has quashed 10 percent reservation quota for the economically backward classes (EBCs).
In this regard, the Court has declared The Gujarat Unreserved Economically Weaker Sections (Reservation of
Seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services under the State)
Ordinance, 2016 unconstitutional.
The ordinance was termed as unconstitutional as the total reservation exceeds in the state exceeded the 50 percent
cap set by the Supreme Court.
The ordinance had provided 10 percent quota for EBCs in higher educational institutions and government jobs.
64. Rajasthan becomes first state to approve sewage & waste water policy
Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to approve sewage and waste water policy.
The first of its kind policy was approved by the State Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister Vasundhara
Raje in Jaipur.
Under this policy, all district headquarters, heritage cities, and cities in the state which have more than one lakh
population will be included.
Waste water treated under it will be used in irrigation and agricultural work. The requirement of next 30 years will

65. BHEL commissions 500MW Marwa Thermal Power station in Chhattisgarh
State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has commissioned the second 500 MW thermal unit at Marwa
Thermal Power Station in Chhattisgarh.
The Thermal unit has been located in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh, Marwa TPS.
It has been set up by Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company (CSPGCL).
The first unit of Marwa TPS was also commissioned earlier by BHEL.
66. Andhra Pradesh signs MoU with Japan to develop food value chain
The Andhra Pradesh government on 30 July 2016 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan to
develop a food value chain in the state.
Under the MoU, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will encourage direct
investments by Japanese companies in the fields of agriculture and food-related industry in Andhra Pradesh.

67. Odisha Govt launches Baristha Bunakar Sahayata Yojana
The Odisha Govt had launched Baristha Bunakar Sahayata Yojana, a special assistance scheme for elderly

Day (observed on 7th August).
The scheme aims at improving the financial condition of over 8,000 weavers in the state.

India has been ranked 77th on the World Risk Index, topped by Island state of Vanuatu.
This is a list of countries by natural disaster risk, as measured in the World Risk Index, calculated by the United
Nations University for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS).
5. India 7th wealthiest country in the world, ahead of Australia, Canada
India was ranked seventh among top 10 wealthiest countries in the world, according to a report by New World
Wealth.
With a total individual wealth of $5,600 billion, India stood at No. 7 in the list, ahead of Canada ($4,700 billion),
Australia ($4,500 billion) and Italy ($4,400 billion), which came in at 8th, 9th and 10th slots, respectively.
The US is the wealthiest in the world in terms of total individual wealth held ($48,900 billion) while China
($17,400 billion) stood second and Japan third with $15,100 billion.
Others in the top 10 club were the United Kingdom at No. 4 with a total individual wealth of $9,200 billion,

The Fortune 2016 Change the World list recognises companies that have had a positive social impact through

Indias pharmaceutical giant Cipla and consumer goods conglomerate Godrej have been recognised by Fortune
magazine in a list of global firms changing the world for the good and having a positive social impact through
their activities.
Cipla is ranked 46th in the list of 50 followed by Godrej on the 48th spot, the only Indian companies in the list.
10. Modis monogrammed suit enters Guinness Book
The monogrammed suit donned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his meeting with U.S. President Barack
Obama in New Delhi last year, which had kicked up a controversy, entered the Guinness World Records as the
most expensive suit sold at auction.
The suit had gone under the hammer in February last year and was purchased for Rs 4.31 crore by Surat-based
diamond trader Lalji Patel, who owns Dharmananda Diamond Company.
The suit, which has stripes with the name Narendra Damodardas Modi woven into it in glittering gold letters,
has been placed inside a glass cabin at the reception of the Dharmananda Diamond Company for visitors to view
it.
The suit was reportedly prepared at a cost of Rs 10 lakh and was auctioned at a base price of Rs 11 lakh.
The Guinness World Records acknowledges the suit as the most expensive suit (clothing) sold at auction is Rs
43,131,311 and was bought by Laljibhai Tulsibhai Patel (India) in Surat, Gujarat, India on February 20, 2015.
11. Myanmar to support Chinas OBOR, BCIM initiatives
Myanmar has officially announced to support for Chinas ambitious One Belt and One Road (OBOR)
connectivity initiative along the ancient Silk Road.

15. 6,900 km gas pipelines to connect Bangladesh, Myanmar, India
The govt has ambitious plan to lay 6,900 km of gas pipelines linking Bangladesh, Myanmar, most north-eastern
states, and West Bengal.
As part of Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for North-eastern region, 6,900 km pipelines would be laid connecting Sitwe
(Myanmar), Chittagong (Bangladesh), most north-eastern states, Siliguri and Durgapur.
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) signed an agreement in April this
year to jointly set up a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal plant in Chittagong port city which will help pipe
gas to the north-eastern states.
16. Google fined $6.8 million by Russian antitrust body
Russia's antitrust body has slapped Google with a $6.8 million fine afterruling that the firm didn't do enough to
open Android up to other companies.
Officials believe that the search engine has abused its dominant position by crowding-out domestic rivals like
Yandex, commonly known as Russia's Google.
For instance, other firms aren't able to pre-load rivals apps for navigation or search on Android devices that are

65 meters with his face just inches off the ground.
Gowda smashed the previous Guinness record of 48.21 meters made in 2012.
Gowda has been practicing the risky sport for one and a half year.

The severe tropical typhoon Nida (also known as Cariana in Philippines) made landfall near Dapeng Peninsula in
Chinas Guangdong Province. Gale-force wind with up to 150 kilometers per hour speed and heavy rain followed

The Chinese State Oceanic Administration has issued a red alert for ocean waves and storm tides caused due to

NASAs solar-powered Juno spacecraft has successfully executed its first flyby of Jupiter, our solar systems

It was the closest contact ever achieved by a man-made probe with Jupiter.
During this flyby, it was for the first time Juno had its entire suite of science instruments activated.

208,000 kilometres per hour with respect to the planet.
3. ISRO conducts successful test launch of scramjet engine
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the first time has successfully conducted the Scramjet (or
Supersonic Combusting ramjet) engine test.
The test was conducted from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikotta in Andhra Pradesh and has successfully
has met all the intended parameters.
The scramjet engine, which works on the Air-breathing Propulsion System, was test launched on board of RH 560
sounding rocket.
RH 560 sounding rocket is two stage Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV).
The ATV along with the scramjet engines weighed 3,277 kg at lift-off.
4. Japanese scientists detect rare deep-Earth tremor S wave microseism
Scientists in Japan studying earthquakes for the first time have detected a rare deep-Earth tremor, known as an S
(secondary) wave microseism.
Microseisms are very faint tremors.
The detection was made by scientists from the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster
Prevention in Japan.
The rare deep-Earth tremor S wave microseism was detected for the first time and traced its location to a distant
and powerful storm.
5. US to create worlds largest protected marine area off Hawaii
United States is going to create worlds largest protected marine reserve area named as Papahanaumokuakea
Marine National Monument off the Hawaiian coast.
It will be created by expansion of present national monument off Hawaii.
US President Barck Obama will use his power to expand this national monument.

13. China, ASEAN countries agree to form South China Sea framework
China and ten member countries of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have agreed to form a
framework for a code of conduct to ease tension in disputed South China Sea.
The agreement was reached between both sides during a meeting at Inner Mongolia in northern China held on
August 15 and 16, 2016.
The two sides also agreed to get the framework for the code of conduct done by mid-2017.

16. IISc bags maximum number of INSA Medals for Young Scientists

17. Scientists develop mechanism to recycle CO2 into usable fuel
Researchers from United States have developed a mechanism to convert greenhouse gas (GHG) Carbon dioxide
(CO2) into carbon monoxide (CO) that can be recycled into usable fuel.
This mechanism was developed by US Department of Energys Argonne National Laboratory and University of
Illinois at Chicago.
This mechanism is based on the natural photosynthesis process that take place in green plants in which CO2 is
converted into sugars.
18. First human genetic editing trial in China
Chinese scientists are going to perform the worlds first genetic editing trial on humans in an attempt to find a
cure for lung cancer.

It will be performed as the trial phase by injecting cells that have been modified using the CRISPR-Cas9 geneediting technique into the patients.
In this trial, scientists will extract T cells, a type of immune cell, from the patients blood.
Then they will put the gene that encodes the PD-1 protein, which normally limits the cells capacity to launch an
immune response.

19. Novel drug compound inhibiting skin cancer discovered: NCCS Study
Researchers from the Pune-based National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) have successfully isolated cancer stem
cells that cause skin cancer.
They have successfully demonstrated that Andrographolide (a compound) isolated and purified from
Andrographis paniculata (a herb) found in India is effective in inhibiting tumour growth both in skin cancer and
lung metastasis in mice.
20. President approves six new IITs across country and one NIT in AP
Six new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will be set up in places like Jammu and Tirupati as President
Pranab Mukherjee gave his nod to a law in this regard.
As per the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2016, which got Mukherjees assent, IITs will also be
started in Palakkad (Kerala), Goa, Dharward (Karnataka) and Bhilai (Chhattisgarh).
The law has also brought the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad under its ambit.
The ISM will now be called Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
The President has also given his assent to a law for establishment of a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in
Andhra Pradesh.
21. China launches Gaofen-3 high-resolution radar imaging satellite
China has successfully launched a new high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) dubbed as Gaofen-3.
It was launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province on the back of a Long
March 4C rocket.
It was 233rd flight mission by a Long March carrier rocket.
The Gaofen-3 satellite was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) and Shanghai
Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), under guidance of China Aerospace Science and Technology
Corporation (CATC).
The Gaofen-3 satellite is Chinas first low orbit remote sensing satellite. It has lifespan of eight years.
22. Unit I of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project dedicated to nation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin dedicated the first unit of the ambitious
Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu to the nation.
KKNPP was dedicated by the leaders through video conferencing from Delhi and Moscow.
It has Indias single largest nuclear generation unit with capacity of 1000 megawatt (MW).
The KKNPP is located in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, around 650 km from Chennai.
It is built under India-Russian Nuclear agreement of 1988.
KKNPP is Indias nuclear power plant to use imported PWR technology.
It has WWER (Water-Water Energetic Reactor) type light water reactors.
23. China launches satellite to get accurate images of earth
China launched a new high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar imaging satellite which provides accurate
pictures of earth with ability to photograph detailed scenarios of its specific areas.
The satellite was launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in northern Shanxi Province.
The Gaofen-3 satellite was launched off on the back of a Long March 4C rocket at 6:55 am (local time),
according to the centre.
It was the 233rd flight mission by a Long March carrier rocket.

China has successfully launched the first satellite dubbed as The Tiantong-01 for mobile telecommunication.
It was launched on-board of the Long March-3B carrier rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre.
The Tiantong-01 is the first satellite of Chinas homemade satellite mobile telecom system. It is a key part of the
countrys space information infrastructure.

25. Shipping Corporation of India Inks MOU amid Growth Plans


Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the countrys
Ministry of Shipping for the financial year 2016-17 as the company eyes growth opportunities.
The MOU, which is based on the MOU guidelines 2016-17 issued by the Department of Public Enterprises
(DPE), consists of parameters drawn on the prescribed evaluation criteria and factors such as capacity and its
expansion, business environment, projects under implementation have been considered.
SCIs growth plans are in line with the Ministry of Shipping and the Government of Indias aims to escalate the
growth of the countrys maritime sector.

1. Flipkarts PhonePe ties up with Yes Bank
Mobile payments start-up PhonePe Internet Pvt. Ltd, which is owned by Flipkart, in partnership with private
lender Yes Bank launched unified payments interface (UPI) based payments app.
PhonePe allows users to link their bank accounts securely to their smartphone using National Payments
Corporation of Indias encrypted libraries.
Once linked, users can authorize money transfers or merchant payments instantly by simply entering their 4-6
digit MPIN, a personal code.
Money is instantly transferred directly from the senders bank account to the recipients bank account. Theres no
need to enter one time password to authorize a transaction.
2. Second unit at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant connected to Southern Grid
The second 1,000 MW capacity reactor of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) was successfully
synchronised to the southern power grid.
This marks the generation of electricity and its supply to the grid by the second reactor of KKNPP.
The plant had attained criticality in July 2016.
Besides with this synchronisation, the total atomic power generation capacity of Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd
(NPCIL) crossed 5,000 MW.
3. Govt panel clears 16 highway projects for bidding
A government panel cleared for bidding 16 highway projects worth Rs 7,456 crore in 11 states: Uttarakhand,
Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh,
and Odisha.
These projects totalling a length of 622 km.
4. Madhukar Gupta Committee: Recommendations on border protection
The Madhukar Gupta Committee on border protection has submitted its report to the Union Ministry Home
Affairs (MHA).
The Committee was constituted to suggest recommendations for strengthening border protection and addressing
the issue of gaps and vulnerability in border fencing along India-Pakistan Border.
It was headed by former Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta.
5. Sony inks pact to buy Ten Sports for $385 million
Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) announced that SPN and its affiliates have entered into definitive agreements
to acquire TEN Sports Network from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEE) and its subsidiaries for $385
million, subject to regulatory approval.

6. Cabinet approves re-promulgation of enemy property ordinance
The Union Cabinet gave post-facto approval to promulgation for the fourth time of an ordinance to amend the
nearly five-decade old Enemy Property Law to guard against claims of succession or transfer of properties left by
people who migrated to Pakistan and China after wars.
President Pranab Mukherjee had on re-promulgated an ordinance to amend the Enemy Property Act (Eviction of
Unauthorised Occupants Act of 1971), which is pending approval in Rajya Sabha.
Enemy property refers to any property belonging to, held or managed on behalf of an enemy, an enemy subject or
an enemy firm.
7. Union Cabinet approves creation of PDF
The Union Cabinet has given its approval to create a Project Development Fund (PDF) for catalysing Indian
economic presence in the CLMV countries viz. Cambodia, Laos Myanmar and Vietnam.
The PDF will have corpus of Rs 500 Crore and shall be housed in Department of Commerce.
It will be operated through the EXIM Bank.
The PDF will be governed by an Inter-Ministerial Committee under the chairpersonship of the Commerce
Secretary.
8. India to grow at 7.6% in FY'17:
The near-term growth outlook for India seems brighter than last fiscal and the economy is likely to expand at 7.6
per cent in 2016-17, the Reserve Bank said in its Annual Report 2015-16.
Overall GVA (gross value added) growth is projected at 7.6 per cent in 2016-17, up from 7.2 per cent last year.
A better than anticipated agricultural performance and the possibility of allowances under the 7th Pay
Commission's award being paid out in the fourth quarter of 2016-17 provide upsides to this projection.
9. Union Cabinet apprises MoU between CERT-In and CERT-UK
The Union Cabinet has apprised the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Indian Computer
Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and CERT-UK.
The MoU was signed between CERT-In and Ministry of Cabinet Office, UK (United Kingdom) represented by
CERT-UK, a unit of the Cabinet Office on Cyber Security in May 2016.
The MoU intends to promote closer cooperation between India and UK for exchange of knowledge and
experience in detection, resolution and prevention of security-related incidents.
It will facilitate both countries to exchange technical information on Cyber-attacks, response to cyber security
incidents and find solutions to counter the cyber-attacks.
10. CRPF to appoint PV Sindhu as Commandant and brand ambassador
Countrys largest paramilitary force CRPF has decided to appoint Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu as its
brand ambassador and bestow the honorary rank of Commandant on the ace badminton player.
Official sources said the force has moved a formal proposal in this regard to the Union Home Ministry and after
getting required sanctions, Sindhu will be honoured and presented the rank badges and camouflage combat
fatigues of the CRPF at a ceremonial event.
11. India, Myanmar ink four agreements to boost bilateral cooperation
India and Myanmar have signed four Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation and bilateral
relations between the two countries.
These agreements were signed after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting
counterpart President of Myanmar U Htin Kyaw in New Delhi.
President Kyaw was on a four day visit to India from 27 August to 30 August 2016.
He is the first democratically elected President of Myanmar to visit India.

12. India, US sign LEMOA
India and the United States have signed Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) that will
enable both countries to use each others bases for repair and replenishment of defence supplies.
The agreement was signed after Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar met his US counterpart, Secretary of
Defence Ashton Carter in Washington, D.C.
The logistics agreement signed was based on the memorandum in principle reached between two leaders in April
2016.
LEMOA is another name for Logistics Support Agreement (LSA), an agreement that US has signed with many of
its allies.
13. NBAGR registers nine new breeds of livestock and poultry
The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) has identified and registered nine new breeds of
indigenous farm (livestock and poultry) animals.
Decision in this regard was taken based on approval of the Breed registration Committee.
These new indigenous breeds were registered based on scientifically produced evidence.
The new germplasm of indigenous farm animals registered as breeds includes 1 breed of cattle, 2 breeds each of
goat and sheep, 3 breeds of pig, and 1 breed of chicken.
14. Union Govt constitutes Committee to suggest steps to promote card payments
The Union Finance Ministry has constituted 11 members high-level committee to suggest steps to promote card
payments with an aim to discourage cash transactions.
The 11-member committee will be headed by Principle Adviser for social sector in NITI Aayog and former
Finance Secretary Ratan P Watal.
It will recommend various measures to incentivise transactions through cards and digital means, e.g., through tax
incentives/rebates, introduction of cash back/lottery.
It will review the payments system in the country and recommend measures for encouraging digital payments.
15. Abhinav Bindra to Head NRAI Review Committee on Rio Debacle
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has constituted five-member review committee to probe the
Indian shooters Rio Games debacle.
The committee will be headed by Indias first and only individual Olympic gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra.
It will submit the report within a maximum period of four weeks. Other members of the committee include former
tennis player Manisha Malhotra, NRAI Secretary Rajiv Bhatia and two journalists.
The committee will examine and identify causes behind shooting not securing any medals at the Rio Olympics.

Forbes on 24 August 2016 released the sixth annual list of The World's Most Innovative Companies 2016.
The list ranked companies using an algorithm to measure investor enthusiasm.
The list is topped by Tesla Motors for the second consecutive year followed by Salesforce and Regeneron
Pharmaceuticals.
Moreover, five major Indian companies including Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consultancy Services,

The Union Cabinet approved a revised Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and the Prevention of Fiscal
Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income between India and Cyprus.
The revised DTAA provides for source-based taxation of capital gains on transfer of shares instead of one based
on residence. It allows India to have the right to tax capital gains arising in India.
Approves MoU with South Africa
The Union Cabinet has been apprised of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India
and South Africa to establish cooperation in Grassroots Innovation.
Under this MoU, Both countries will jointly organise various programmes such as forums, workshops, seminars
and training on matters related to innovation.
Approves signing of Air Services Agreement between India and Fiji
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing of new Air Services Agreement (ASA) between India and
Fiji.
The Agreement is for updation of the existing ASA between the two countries which was signed in January, 1974.
The objective of new ASA is to improve the air connectivity between the two countries by updating the existing
ASA, keeping in view the latest developments in civil aviation sector.
Under new ASA, both countries shall be entitled to designate one or more airline.
These airlines shall have right to establish offices in other country for promotion and sale of air services.
Approves MoU between India and Myanmar
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between
India and Myanmar in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine.
The MoU will provide structured frame work for promotion of AYUSH/Traditional Systems of Medicine in

India and Bangladesh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Route Permit for carrying
Petroleum Goods to Tripura via Bangladesh.
The MoU was signed between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the Roads and Highways Department
of Bangladesh in Dhaka.
The MoU enables IOCL to send its trucks carrying High Speed Diesel, Motor Spirit, Superior Kerosene Oil and
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Meghalaya to Tripura via territory of Bangladesh.

29. India ranks 66th in 2016 Global Innovation Index


India has ranked 66th in the 2016 Global Innovation Index (GII). In this edition, India has jumped up by 15 spots
from 81st position in 2015 GII.
The annual index was released by France-based international business school INSEAD and World Intellectual
Property Organisation (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
The index ranks world economies since 2007 according to their innovation capabilities using more than 80
indicators.
30. IIT-Kanpur adopts five villages under Namami Gange programme
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kanpur has adopted five villages in Uttar Pradesh under the Namami
Gange programme.
These five villages are Ramel Nagar, Khoyra Katree, Pratapur, Hari Hindpur, and Katri Ladhva Khera.
Under the initiative, IIT-Kanpur will use its expertise to restrict the flow of sewage into the River Ganga.
The task will be undertaken by the institutes civil engineering department.
It will ensure that sewage water is not disposed of in the river, and also keep a check on quality of drinking water
and sanitation.
31. ICHR plans to create encyclopedia of village-level folklore across the country
The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) is planning to document stories and legends relating to villages
and towns across India into an encyclopedia.
This initiative is aimed at to connect people better with the oral and folk traditions.
It would be among the key initiatives to be under taken by ICHR.
Other initiatives to be undertaken includes study of the princely States of modern India, studies to fill the gaps
between the Harappan civilisation (first Indian urbanisation) and the 6th century BC (second urbanisation).
ICHR is an autonomous body of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. It was established by an
Administrative Order of the then Union Ministry of Education and Social Welfare.
It is based in New Delhi with regional centers in Bengaluru (Karnataka) and Gowahati (Assam).
32. Four states get new governors
President Pranab Mukherjee appointed four new governors and the list includes former Union minister Najma
Heptulla for Manipur.
Former Union Minister Najma Heptulla has been appointed as Governor of Manipur.

The 100 Richest Tech Billionaires In The World 2016 list has been topped by Microsoft founder Bill Gates with
an estimated fortune of $78 billion.
Premji ranks 13th on the list with a networth of $16 billion and Nadar comes in on the 17th spot with $11.6 billion

36. CBDT constitutes committee to review media policy
CBDT has constituted a new committee to "review" the existing media policy for communicating the activities of
the board and the income tax department to the public.
The nine-member committee has been created under Central Board of Direct Taxes member Gopal Mukherjee
and mandated to draft new set of guidelines for "regulating" the interaction of the department with journalists and
media organisations.
They said newly-appointed CBDT chairperson Rani Singh Nair ordered the constitution of the committee, which
has been asked to submit its report to the policy-making body of the I-T department by September 30.
The CBDT has six members apart from the chairperson and is responsible for framing policy and administrative
issues related to direct taxes and the income tax department.
37. NITI Aayog inks pact with US EIA to set up portal on energy data
The NITI Aayog has inked a pact with US Energy Information Administration (EIA) in a step to set up a portal to
host all the data related to energy sector in the country.
The web portal will host all the data related to energy sector including oil and gas, coal, solar and thermal energy

It will be developed as part of NITI Aayogs efforts to set up Indias energy data agency, which would take threefour years to develop.
Besides, NITI Aayog also inked an SOP with US Agency for International Development (USAID) and UKs
Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) for collaboration in the area of energy research.
Puducherry, which is the first union territory to join UDAY, will work to improve the operational efficiency of

Approves Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016
The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for introducing the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill,
2016 in Parliament.
The Bill seeks to amend the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961.
The law protects the employment of women during the time of her maternity and entitles her of a maternity
benefit.
The maternity benefit includes full paid leave from work to take care for her child. This law is applicable to all
establishments employing 10 or more persons.

Proposed amendments will increase Maternity Benefit to 26 weeks from 12 weeks for two surviving children and
12 weeks for more than two children.
Approves MoU between India and South Africa
The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between
India and South Africa for cooperation in the field of Tourism.
The MoU was signed in July 2016.
Encourage cooperation between tourism stakeholders, including hotels and tour operators.
Approves The Lokpal and Lokayuktas (Amendment) Bill, 2016
The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval Lokayuktas (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The Bill seeks to amend Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 which provides for establishment of the Lokpal at the
centre and Lokayuktas in the states for inquiring into complaints of corruption against certain public servants.
The approved amendments will amend Section 44 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.
These amendments will address concerns and apprehensions expressed by different categories of public servants.
Approves Agreement between the India and Croatia on Economic Cooperation
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing and ratification of an Agreement between India and Croatia
on Economic Cooperation.
India and Croatia had signed an Agreement on trade and economic cooperation earlier in September, 1994 with an
aim to promote and develop bilateral trade and economic relations.

39. Govt to set up panel to review e-commerce rules


The government is to set up a committee to look into all issues, including foreign direct investment norms,
pertaining to the fast growing e-commerce industry in the country.
The committee will be headed by the NITI Aayog CEO.
The other members in the panel include officials from the commerce and industry ministry and department of
electronics and IT, among others.
It will look at all the issues, including FDI pertaining to the e-commerce sector.
40. IRCTC signs MoU with Manipur govt to provide hospitality & tourism services
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Manipur government have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which seeks to provide improved hospitality and tourism services to their
customers by making 'joint use of their capabilities and facilities'.
The MoU entails upon both the parties to identify areas of cooperation and draw up detailed plans for
development of joint tourism products and opening and managing various catering and hospitality outlets, budget
hotels and handicrafts shops at railway as well as non-railway locations.
41. NHAI Signs MOU with IIT- Kharagpur
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IITKharagpur for research project on Laboratory and Field investigations on Paneled Cement Concrete Pavements
for Highways.
The duration of the research project is 3 years and NHAI have paid Rs. 1.25 crore for the project, excluding cost
of construction of trial pavement section on NH.
NHAI in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur shall promote to develop a technology to construct Panelled Cement
Concrete (Pre-fabricated in a small panel size) which can replace the design of construction of existing cement
concrete road.
42. WII to house Indias first tiger repository
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) will house the Indias first repository on tigers, under its new Tiger Cell.
The repository will consist of huge database on tiger conservation and population estimation which has been
prepared with collaborated effort with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
WII is an autonomous institution under the Union Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change.
It is based in Chandrabani, Dehradun.

44. Union Cabinet approvals:
Approves signing of Air Services Agreement between India and Lao
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing of new Air Services Agreement (ASA) between India and
Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).
ASA is the basic legal framework for any air operation between the two countries.
Under the agreement, the designated airlines of the two countries will have equal and fair opportunity to operate
the agreed air services on specified routes.
The Agreement is expected to spur greater investment, trade, tourism and cultural exchange between two
countries and also bring developments in the civil aviation sector.
Approves Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill, 2016
The Union Cabinet has approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to improve road safety scenario in
the country.
The bill seeks to amend Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), 1988 and proposes to hefty penalties against violations of
road safety rules as a deterrent measure.
Approves amendments in Central List of OBCs applicable to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for making suitable amendments in the Central List of OBCs (Other
Backward Classes) applicable to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
This decision has been taken as per the recommendations of the National Commission for Backward Classes
(NCBC).
The suitable amendments in the Central List of OBCs will be done by inclusion/deletion of castes/communities
applicable to Andhra Pradesh and newly formed State of Telangana.
NCBC has recommended total of 35 changes in respect of Andhra Pradesh and also suggested 86 New Entries in
respect of Telangana.
The changes will enable the persons belonging to these communities in both states to avail the benefits of
reservation in Government services as well as in Central Educational Institutions.
Approves Spectrum Usage Charge for the spectrum in various bands
The Union Cabinet has approved the rates for Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) for various bands of spectrum for
which auction are going to be conducted shortly.
With this approval the path is clear for issuance of the Notice Inviting Application (NIV) for spectrum auction by
the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
SUC is the charge that telecom firms have to pay the government every year.
The Union Government earns about Rs.7,000 crore annually from it.
SUC prescribed by Cabinet SUC in 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 & 2500 MHz band in the forthcoming
auction will be charged at 3% rate of Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR).
45. Shubha Mudgal selected for Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award
Singer Shubha Mudgal has been selected for the prestigious the 23rd Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award
2016.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju as the
head of a four-member legal panel to help the board understand the implications of the Justice Lodha Committee

The decision was taken in the board's working committee meeting in Mumbai.
The BCCI decided to make Katju the "single point interface" for the board "to interact with the Justice Lodha
Committee as well advise and guide" the world's richest cricketing body.
The Supreme Court has made it mandatory for the BCCI to implement the Lodha Committee recommendations in
the next six months.
The legal committee is expected to meet for the first time on August 4 and apprise the senior BCCI officials on
the issue after which the Special General Meeting will be held on August 5 in New Delhi.

47. India to host international summit on tobacco-control


India will host a crucial global summit in November to eliminate the illicit trade of tobacco products in which
delegates from 180 countries will take part.
India will host the 7th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP7) to the WHO Framework Convention on
Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC).
The summit is scheduled from November 7-12 at the Indian Exposition Mart in Noida and aims "to eliminate
illicit trade of tobacco products."
48. Ex-CMs not entitled for government accommodation for lifetime: SC
The Supreme Court has held that former Chief Ministers are not entitled for government accommodation for
lifetime.
The judgment of the apex court came on a plea filed by Uttar Pradesh-based NGO Lok Prahari which had sought
a direction against allotment of government bungalows to former CMs.
The apex court pronounced its verdict on a 2004 plea and rule that any such government accommodation should
be vacated within two to three months.

Indias 100-year-old athlete, Man Kaur, on 30 August 2016 won Gold medal at the American Masters Games in
the 100-meter dash.

She from Chandigarh was the only female competitor in her age category at the competition for older athletes.
Earlier, she won gold medals in the javelin and shot put.
2. Yogeshwars London Games bronze medal upgraded to silver
Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutts bronze medal from the London Olympics has been upgraded to silver after
second-place finisher late Besik Kudukhov of Russia was stripped off his medal for failing a dope test.
With Russias Besik Kudukhov being found guilty of using banned substances, Yogeshwar has been stripped of
his silver medal in the 60kg freestyle category at the 2012 Games, clearing the way for Yogeshwars bronze
medal to now be upgraded to silver.
The Russian, who beat Yogeshwar and went on to finish runner-up, died in an accident in 2013.
3. Nico Rosberg wins 2016 Belgian Grand Prix

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on August 27 set a world record when he led the team against West Indies in

7. PM forms task force to plan for next three Olympics
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the setting up of a task force which will help to plan for the effective

He made the announcement at the monthly meeting of the Union Council of Ministers and said the structure of the
task force would be in place in the next few days.
8. Four athletes get Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award
Four athletes, including Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, shooter Jitu Rai and
Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik received the Rajiv Khel Ratna Award from President Pranab Mukherjee
in New Delhi on August 29.
Fifteen sportspersons were honoured with the Arjuna Award and three with the Dhyan Chand Award.

12. 2016 Rio Olympics comes to an end
The 31st Summer Olympics (or 2016 Rio Olympics) hosted by Brazilian City, Rio de Janeiro ended after 16 days
of sporting spectacle.
The games had seen participations of nearly 11,000 participants from 205 countries, including a first-ever refugee
team featuring in 306 events of 42 sporting disciplines.

Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav was banned from all competitive sporting events for four years by the Court of
Arbitration for Sport (CAS) based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

He was banned by CAS following an appeal by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as there was no evidence to

18. Wrestler Sakshi Malik wins Indias first medal at Rio Olympics

Indias top squash player Dipika Pallikal has won the prestigious PSA Australian Open held in Melbourne.

Michael Phelps won his fourth consecutive 200m individual medley Olympic title.
With this, he became the first swimmer ever to win four consecutive golds in the same event.

Japans Kosuke Hagino won the silver medal and Chinas Wang Shun took the bronze.

The American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, holding her

Thrasher had a cumulative score of 208.0 to beat Du, a two-time gold medallist, by a point.

26. Gymnast Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian to qualify for Vault Finals
Dipa Karmakar, the Indian Gymnast, on 7 August 2016 created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to

The 31st edition of Summer Olympic Games opened in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
It was declared open by Acting Brazilian President Michel Temer at the Maracana Stadium.
The theme of the 31st edition of Summer Olympic Games was World peace and Environment.

The 2016 Rio Olympics games are scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5 to 21 August 2016.
It is officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.

28. IOC approves five new Sports for Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
The international olympic committee (IOC) agreed to add baseball/softball, karate, skateboard, sports climbing
and surfing to the sports programme for the olympic games tokyo 2020.
The decision by the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro was the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic
programme in modern history.
Plans call for staging the skateboarding and sports climbing events in temporary venues installed in urban
settings, marking a historic step in bringing the Games to young people and reflecting the trend of urbanisation of
sport.
The Organising Committee for the Tokyo 2020 Games proposed the five new sports in response to the new
flexibility provided by Olympic Agenda 2020.
The International Olympic Committee is a not-for-profit independent international organisation made up of
volunteers, which is committed to building a better world through sport.
It redistributes more than 90 per cent of its income to the wider sporting movement, which means that every day
the equivalent of USD 3.25 million goes to help athletes and sports organisations at all levels around the world.
29. Wall of Wishes inaugurated to celebrate Olympic mood
Sports Minister Vijay Goel on 2 August 2016 inaugurated Wall of Wishes at India Gate Lawns in New Delhi.
The Wall of Wishes was launched in presence of Olympian Boxer M C Mary Kom to celebrate the Olympic
mood in the country.
Rio Olympics is scheduled to be held from 5 August to 21 August 2016.
Besides, Goel also launched Digital Campaign for general public to wish Indian Olympic Contingent for the Rio
Games.
The Wall was inaugurated after the RUN FOR RIO, which was organised on 31 July 2016 by the Ministry of
Sports and Youth Affairs to connect public at large, with the Olympic spirit and power of sports.
This year India is sending its largest ever contingent (120) to participate in the Olympic Games.
30. Novak Djokovic wins 2016 ATP Toronto Masters
Novak Djokovic (World no 1) from Serbia has won the 2016 ATP Toronto Masters also known as the Rogers
club title in the mens single category.
In the final match, he defeated Kei Nishikori (World no 6) of Japan by 6-3, 7-5 score.
It was Djokovics his 66th career title and fourth Canadian title (won in 2007, 2011 and 2012).
Womens singles title: Simona Halep (World no 5) of Romania won the Rogers club title in the womens single
category.
In the final match she defeated Madison Keys of US by 7-6, 6-3 score.
Mens doubles title: Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Marcelo Melo (Brazil) won the Rogers club title in the mens
doubles category.
They defeated pair of Jamie Murray (Scotland) and Bruno Soares (Brazil).
Womens doubles title: Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the Rogers club title in the
womens doubles category.
In the final match they defeated Romanian pair of Simona Halep and Monica Niculescu.
