Underitsformername,HounslowBoroughCollege,ithadalreadyestablishedaregional,nationaland

Someoneonceputforwardanattractivethoughunlikelytheory.ThroughouttheEarth'sannual
revolutionaroundthesunthereisonepointofspacealwayshiddenfromoureyes.Thispointisthe
oppositepartoftheEarth'sorbit,whichisalwayshiddenbythesun.Couldtherebeanotherplanet
there,essentiallysimilartoourown,butalwaysinvisible?

Ifaspaceprobetodaysentbackevidencethatsuchaworldexisteditwouldcausenotmuchmore
sensationthanSirWilliamHerschel'sdiscoveryofanewplanet,Uranus,in1781.Herschelwasan
extraordinarymannootherastronomerhasevercoveredsovastafieldofworkandhiscareer
deservesstudy.HewasborninHanoverinGermanyin1738,lefttheGermanarmyin1757,and
arrivedinEnglandthesameyearwithnomoneybutquiteexceptionalmusicability.Heplayedthe
violinandoboeandatonetimewasorganistintheOctagonChapelinthecityofBath.Herschel'swas
anactivemind,anddeepinsidehewasconsciousthatmusicwasnothisdestiny;hethereforeread
widelyinscienceandthearts,butnotuntil1772didhecomeacrossabookonastronomy.Hewas
then34,middleagedbythestandardsofthetime,butwithouthesitationheembarkedonhisnew
career,financingitbyhisprofessionalworkasamusician.Hespentyearsmasteringtheartof
telescopeconstruction,andevenbypresentdaystandardshisinstrumentsarecomparablewiththe
best.

Seriousobservationbegan1774.Hesethimselftheastonishingtaskof'reviewingtheheavens',in
otherwords,pointinghistelescopetoeveryaccessiblepartoftheskyandrecordingwhathesaw.The
firstreviewwasmadein1775;thesecond,andmostmomentous,in178081.Itwasduringthelatter
partofthisthathediscoveredUranus.Afterwards,supportedbytheroyalgrantinrecognitionofhis
work,hewasabletodevotehimselfentirelytoastronomy.Hisfinalachievementsspreadfromthe
sunandmoontoremotegalaxies(ofwhichhediscoveredhundreds),andpapersfloodedfromhispen

untilhisdeathin1822.AmongthesetherewasonesenttotheRoyalSocietyin1781,entitledAn
AccountofaComet.Inhisownwords:

OnTuesdaythe13thofMarch,betweentenandelevenintheevening,whileIwasexaminingthe
smallstarsintheneighbourhoodofHGeminorum,Iperceivedonethatappearedvisiblylargerthan
therest;beingstruckwithitsuncommonmagnitude,IcomparedittoHGeminorumandthesmall
starinthequartilebetweenAurigaandGemini,andfindingittobemuchlargerthaneitherofthem,
suspectedittobeacomet.

Herschel'scarewasthehallmarkofagreatobserver;hewasnotpreparedtojumpanyconclusions.
Also,tobefair,thediscoveryofanewplanetwasthelastthoughtinanybody'smind.Butfurther
observationbyotherastronomersbesidesHerschelrevealedtwocuriousfacts.Forcomet,itshowed
aremarkablysharpdisc;furthermore,itwasmovingsoslowlythatitwasthoughttobeagreat
distancefromthesun,andcometsareonlynormallyvisibleintheimmediatevicinityofthesun.Asits
orbitcametobeworkedoutthetruthdawnedthatitwasanewplanetfarbeyondSaturn'srealm,
andthatthe'revieweroftheheavens'hadstumbledacrossanunprecedentedprize.Herschelwanted
tocallitgeorgiumsidus(StarofGeorge)inhonourofhisroyalpatronKingGeorgeIIIofGreatBritain.
TheplanetwaslaterforatimecalledHerschelinhonourofitsdiscoverer.ThenameUranus,which
wasfirstproposedbytheGermanastronomerJohannElertBode,wasinusebythelate19thcentury.

Uranusisagiantinconstruction,butnotsomuchinsize;itsdiametercomparesunfavourablywith
thatofJupiterandSaturn,thoughontheterrestrialscaleitisstillcolossal.Uranus'atmosphere
consistslargelyofhydrogenandhelium,withatraceofmethane.Throughatelescopetheplanet
appearsasasmallbluishgreendiscwithafaintgreenperiphery.In1977,whilerecordingthe
occultation1ofastarbehindtheplanet,theAmericanastronomerJamesL.Elliotdiscoveredthe
presenceoffiveringsencirclingtheequatorofUranus.FourmoreringswerediscoveredinJanuary
1986duringtheexploratoryflightofVoyager22,Inadditiontoitsrings,Uranushas15satellites
('moons'),thelast10discoveredbyVoyager2onthesameflight;allrevolveaboutitsequatorand
movewiththeplanetinaneastwestdirection.Thetwolargestmoons,TitaniaandOberon,were
discoveredbyHerschelin1787.Thenexttwo,UmbrielandAriel,werefoundin1851bytheBritish
