Week 1 Reading Objectives and Assignment

Hint: Fill in the circles marking the parts of your assignment when you have finished that part.
This assignment guide has 3 circles ().
Hint: You will get faster completing your assignments with practice. Set aside time on the days
you do not have class to complete your work. Use your secret weapon- a timer! Use a timer to
keep yourself moving at a productive pace. I set mine for 30 minutes and concentrate without
interruptions for that time. Amaze yourself with what you can get finished in 30 minutes of
concentration.

Assignment: Read and take notes on Chapter 1, Whats a Greek?, pages 17-21, using the
Cornell Note-taking format. Read through the entire guide before you begin. Due: Tuesday,
9/13/2016.

Directions: Use this handout to guide your reading and organize your notes. Using your own
paper, take notes in a Cornell Note-taking format similar to the one I started for you below.
Include all of the Learning Targets; I just used two, to get your started. Note the Learning Targets
are re-stated on the left and the corresponding notes are written on the right. Think of the left
side of your notes as an index to help you find the details you need on the right. When your
notes are finished, they will be your low tech learning machine. Ill show you how in class.
Learning Targets
Where is Greece on the
map?
Note: a visual note is
better for this learning
target so I have supplied
a map handout. You
could even draw your
own map if you like.
Physical features of
Greece
Note: Lists work well for
writing the details
needed for this target.

Complete Chapter Test 1 Handout - For this test, you may use your notes and your
text (not the internet or other peoples brains) but you need to finish it in no more than 45
minutes. That means, you need study your notes before you take the test so that you
know where to find information in your notes. By Test 3 you will be familiar with the kinds
of tests follow your textbook reading and will progress to taking the tests without notes.

Take heart- in over 30 years of teaching, I have seen that students consistently score
higher on tests that are NOT open-note.
