Course Description

The course begins by reviewing fundamental concepts and

principles of statics, vectors and vector algebra. This basic
knowledge gained will help to enhance the understanding of
force analysis on particles in equilibrium and the principle of
moment. This will eventually reinforced the studies on structural
analysis with different loading conditions. The study on the
characteristics of dry friction and belt friction will complete the
analysis of loading on an object. Towards the end, the concept of
center of gravity, center of mass, centroid and moment of inertia,
together with its application are discussed.

Course Objectives

1) To learn the fundamental concepts and principles of statics to

solve problems that involves force and moment acting on
particles and rigid bodies in equilibrium.
2) To apply the law of friction to bodies in equilibrium.
3) To understand the concept of center of gravity, center of mass,
centroid and moment of inertia of a body.

Transferrable Skills

Ability to apply the foundation and applications of statics in a

variety of modern engineering applications.
