Purpose: Effective Classroom Management is essential in order to ensure positive student behaviors that
are conducive to learning and social interactions. Your classroom organization, disciplinary procedures, and
classroom routines are critical indicators of your management skill. As a new teacher you will need to think
ahead about how to manage your environment as well as your students.
Task: Congratulations! You have just been hired as a new 1st grade teacher. Your principal has asked you
to submit a copy of your management plan for the office if parents and substitutes have questions.

Part I: Classroom Organization

A. Physical

Hand!in/Hand!out!Area!

When you first walk into my classroom right away you see the rug and full class space, by doing this
I believe the initial classroom distractions are eliminated showing students learning is important. In the
center of the room are the students circular desks that provide an easy opportunity for students to work
together and collaborate during the school day. The teachers desk is also in this area of the room to remind
students the teacher is in a position to help and observe throughout the whole classroom. By doing this it also
creates a natural classroom separation instead of using a room divider, which would just put more in the
classroom. I added a kidney table just off the teachers desk to give the teacher the option to work with their
back to the students while also having the option to spin around and be apart of the classroom.
To the right of the teachers area I placed the classroom library and book corner, which provides a
comfy place for students to read their books using pillows or the armchair. I wanted my classroom to have
open areas for students to get comfortable, which is also why there is so much space between the students
tables so students can move freely around the classroom. I feel it is very important to have a classroom pet
that students are responsible for, for that reason the pet is not next to the teachers desk nonverbally telling
the students the pet is their responsibility. On the left side of the teachers desk is the computer station,
secluded from the rest of the classroom so it doesnt distract students. There are two smaller tables next to
the students desks to provide additional workspace that is separate from others but not from the class. I do
not want my students to be put on the other side of the classroom if they need to be separated from
distractions.
The coat hanger area is all on the back wall just inside the door so it stays out of students way during
the day. It also creates a natural place to line up at when leaving the classroom. Above the coat hangers I put
a world map to remind students just how big it really is and to show how much there is to learn about it. I put
3

a bulletin board right next to the door, so that every time students enter or leave the classroom they can see
their work displayed.
I believe my classroom set up is very well designed for teachers and students to work together in
school. Putting possible distractions in the corners to help students keep them off their minds and learning
with their peers at the center.

B. Operational
Record KeepingEach subject will have its own binder that will contain everything that will be needed for the unit.
Including, lesson plans, objectives, worksheets, and resources. I will use this as a tool to keep myself
organized as well as my students. Having this binder will also make it easy to show parents what students
will be doing in class if they would like to know up front. Parents
always like to see a teacher who is prepared for the students as well
as the adults. I will have a handwritten grade book that I will take
notes in throughout the day about the activities, students, and their
progress. Later on I will enter this information into the online grade
book that my school uses.
New StudentsAt the beginning of the school year I will have gallon plastic
bags that I will fill with items that new students will need. As I hand
out papers to the students in the class I will also put them in the new
student folders, then on the first day that they students are in my
class they will receive a bag of materials. This way all the students
4

will have the same nametags to encourage the new student to feel welcome in the classroom. There will also
be important papers that my students have brought home to their parents in the beginning of the school year.
By doing this I will be prepared for a new student, and be able to help the students adjust to my classroom
right away because they have all the necessary materials to begin in the
classroom.
AttendanceStudents are expected to be at school on time and in their seat
working on the morning activity when the bell rings. To save time and
disruption from taking attendance out loud the students will be in charge
of marking themselves present each day. On the first day of school
students will be given a Popsicle stick (with their name on the back) that
as a class we will all decorate together to make look like ourselves.
Each day after the students will find themselves on the table and then
put their Popsicle stick in the little pocket that also says their name. I
will be able to do a quick silent scan of the wall to know who is here or
not without disrupting the morning routine. It will also make marking
students on the actual attendance sheet much faster because the work is
already done.
Turning in HomeworkAt the front of the classroom there will be a basket labeled Hand In where students can put their
finished work. I will have a basket of highlighters there also so that before students hand in their assignments
they can highlight their name, getting in the habit of making sure they put it on all of their papers. Doing this
in 1st grade I believe will help students become responsible for their work, thus leading to the development of
responsible students. At the end of each day I will empty the Hand In basket to look over students work that
they have completed.
Displaying Student workTo display student work I am going to have a section of the classroom called Wow Work, here
students will have the choice of what goes on the wall. I want my students to be proud of what goes on the
wall, which is why at the end of each week I will ask
students to turn in the assignment that they are most
proud of for the week so I can hang it up for the next
week. By doing this I believe I am showing the
importance of every piece students do in school,
students can hang up a math practice sheet or a
picture they drew in art. I want my students to be able
to portray what they feel are their best work, not what
I feel is their best work.

Part II: Disciplinary Policies and Professional Ethics

ExpectationsThree expectations I have for my classroom:
1. Respect others and yourself
2. Come ready to learn
3. Do the best that you can do
These are the classroom expectations that I will have for my classroom. They are non-negotiable; students
will respect others and themselves when they are at school. This includes treating others and yourself right
and how you would want to be treated. Listening to others ideas with respect because that is what you would
want them to do for you. I expect my students to come to class ready to learn, our days will be full of things
to do and I need my students cooperation in order to maximize our time together. My final expectation is that
students do the best that they can do. Students abilities and final products will all be different and I dont
expect that my students do everything perfect, however they should perform to their best ability. I will do
my role and have high standards for all students but the students must show me what they can do.
ConsequencesIf students break one of our classroom rules I will first give them a verbal warning asking
Are you making a good choice right now? or Is this how a first grader should act? as well as Would
you like to sit by yourself for a little bit? The goal of these questions is to redirect the students to see if they
can self-monitor and fix the action that is not appropriate in
Name:________
my classroom. If the student needs more than a redirection
Date:______
students will receive a Self Reflection sheet. Students will be
Self
Reflection
asked to fill out this sheet to help the student understand
what they were doing was not helping them or people around

them learn. After a Self Reflection sheet has been handed out
1) Respect others and yourself
it guarantees a student teacher conference to discuss the
2) Come ready to learn
issue. It is my hope that at this point students are able to say
3) Do the best you can do
what they were doing that was not appropriate for school. If
not as the teacher I will inform the student of the issue and
2. What can I do differently?
we will discuss alternative actions that are appropriate for
students to use.
All consequences will depend on the behavior that
took place, and the students needs. Students may be asked to
changes seats until the timer goes off or they are able to cool
down. All consequences will be fair and logical according to the misbehavior. If it is needed office
reinforcement will be called after I have taken all my action steps to
handle the situation. However if misbehavior becomes regular for a
specific student office support may be brought in to develop an action
plan to fit the students needs.
Handling student disrespectI really like the idea of giving students a nonverbal reminder
that they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. I want to
avoid as many distractions that I can by giving students silent cues and
reminders. The stop sign idea is a simple way for students to be
reminded they are not on task without embarrassing them or
6

disrupting the other students around them. The stop signs can be used for more than students being off task,
they can also be used for students who are talking, not doing anything, or bothering their neighbors. If
disrespectful behavior continues students will be asked to move seats to stop the negative behavior. If they
student reaches this I will make it a point to explain to the student why I do not like their behavior. My
students will always know what behavior they are doing that is inappropriate for school. If students are
disrespecting another person be that peer, teacher, or faculty member students will be responsible for writing
an apology letter or giving an apology face to face. Before this happens I will meet with students so they
understand why their decisions were not acceptable behavior toward other people. After that students will
apologize in one of the two ways. If an apology is needed students will be sent home with a slip of paper that
describes what happened at school that warranted an apology slip, parents or guardians are responsible for
signing the paper. The student is responsible for bringing it back the next day of school
TattlingIn order to minimize the number of classroom
disruptions we will have a tattling box set up in the
classroom to hold the tattles students make
throughout the day. In doing this I want to help teach
students the difference between important things to
tell the teacher and tattling which can wait for a
better time. I love the idea of a Tattle Monster box to
eat all the useless tattles that are made during the day.
The idea of the Tattle Monster box is that if what the
student put inside earlier in the day is so important
that they feel it is necessary to share at the end of the
day with the teacher then the students will know it is
important information.
Handling playground conflictsIf there was a conflict on the playground that came back into the classroom I will give students a
verbal reminder that recess is over and it is time to focus on learning. If additional refocusing is needed
students will have the option to sit apart from the rest of the class for five minutes to cool down. This could
take place at the table in the back of the room or sitting at their seat while the rest of the class is on the
carpet. Students can have a short conference with the teacher no more than two minutes to explain the issue
and identify what they problem is. This should only happen if a lesson is not taking place, if instruction is
happening both students will be required to sit at their seats away from each other to cool down.
TardinessThe classroom tardy policy will coincide with the school wide tardy policy. Students will not be
punished for being tardy because it is often not the students fault. If it becomes an issue a note will be sent
home to parent to remind them of the importance of getting to school on time. It will explain the need for
students to come on time for school, and developing a morning routine to promote success for the child. As a
teacher I will do my best to understand why the student is late so often, are they slow movers in the morning
or is the parent doing everything they can to get the child to school. I will look at every situation separately
and be mindful of the different home lives that my students will have.

AbsencesTo help keep everyone on track when a student is absent I will have Ketchup Folders on students
desks so that at the end of the day all the papers from the day
can go right into the folder. That way when the student
returns to school there will be no searching for what they
missed it will all be right on their desk. Depending on the
individual student it will be up to me to decide if the student
needs an explanation of the class work or if they need oneon-one teaching to get them caught up to speed.
Lack of motivationsIf students are having motivation issues I will ask
students to have a meeting with me to discuss why they are
not doing their work. During this meeting I am hoping to get
to the root of the problem to understand why students lack
motivation. For students who need more support from me, I
will have a table close to
my desk that will be will
be called our Workers Table. It will be reserved for students who need
space to work or require more directed focus. No student should be
embarrassed about what their classmates think if they need to have a
different work location, by having a positive name to the table it
eliminates negative connotations.
Some students may need reinforcements to get them to do their
work, if this is the case students will be permitted to use teacher provided
items to encourage work. Some items that will be available are bouncing
chairs, spongy balls, and the special eraser. When students are given the
different items they will be reminded that the items are a privilege and if
they are not used correctly they will be taken away. All students have the
chance to utilize the items however each student must earn their
opportunity.

BullyingBullying will not be tolerated in my classroom. Our classroom is a family that has nice and respectful
members. If there is an incident of bullying I will have a talk with students to communicate why their actions
were not family like. Students will be required to write an apology letter or give a verbal apology to the peer
they disrespected. If bullying becomes a habit for a student a call home to be needed, or a conference will be
set up to discuss the issue with the family. Appropriate actions will be taken to prevent further bullying.
CheatingCheating is not acceptable in my classroom. One of our classroom rules is to do the best you can do;
students know they are required to do their best not the friends next to them. If cheating should occur during
a test, students will have their test taken away. The students will have a discussion with me about doing their
own work and how cheating is not aloud. They will then be required to complete the test during recess. A
call will go home to the parents to inform them of the poor choice of their child. I will record the incident for
future reference.
8

Parent involvementI would love to have parents work in the classroom, assisting in their childs learning and helping to
develop positive relationships with parents, so that if and when problems arise a relationship will already be
built, increasing the comfort level parents have with me as the teacher.
At the beginning of the school year I will send out a paper encouraging parents (if they are able) to help out
in the classroom or on fieldtrips. I will ask parents to identify what, when, and where they would like to
assist in the class learning.
Principal involvementThe Principal will be involved as a last resort for student behavior. As a teacher it is my job to take
care of incidents that happen within my classroom, if the principal is called in for support that means I have
exhausted all of my resources in handling the situation. If I feel a problem is occurring that may need future
assistance from the office I will inform my principal right away to avoid blindsiding him/her. The principal
is the final step in handling a behavior issue.
Lounge gossipI will not partake in lounge gossip, it is not professional and not acceptable for teachers to talk about
students, their families, or private matters. Instead I will choose to eat in my classroom or an alternate
location in order to distance myself from the negative talk. Students business should only be between the
student, families, and the current teachers involved in the students education. I want to develop positive
relationships with my colleges that focus on encouragement and guidance to make myself and those around
me better at their job.
Disagreements with colleaguesIf I do not get along with a colleague, I will do my best to keep my distance from them unless
necessary. I do not want to create an issue if one can be avoided. Our relationship will be professional and
courteous and will not affect the environment around us. As two professionals we can handle keeping a
positive learning and working environment.
Disagreements with principalIf I disagree with my principal I will keep it to myself, it is not something that should be shared with
those around me. I would professionally and respectfully approach the principal to discuss alternate
strategies or my difference in options, in hopes of creating a better working relationship. If an alternate
agreement cannot be arranged I will accept the fact that the principal has the final say, they are my boss and
it is my job to follow the guidelines they set up.

Part III:
Getting students attentionTo get the students attention I am going to provide noise cues. Such as making a pattern such as chacha-cha or clapping and have the students repeat it back to me. I want students to be in charge of their own
learning, and not rely on others for visual cues when the class is too noisy. As a student I found it difficult to
work and be aware of the teacher silently counting down with her fingers in order to gain the classes
attention. Another method that I believe is effective is shutting the lights off for a moment until the class has
settled down, it immediately informs the students of a change in the area around them. I like this idea
because it is a way to gain control without adding to the noise teachers often want to eliminate.
Student helpersBeing a student helper is a privilege in my classroom; each student will get a turn at each job as long
as they can handle the responsibility. Students will miss out on
their turn if they cannot follow classroom rules or be kind to
their peers. If student helpers are absent on their day, their turn
will be made up when they return to school. The order that
helpers will be chosen will be by students names being on a
loop so that every student has a chance at each job. Students will
be rotated through the jobs, to ensure all students get a turn at
every job.
Line leader- The line leader will be in charge of
beginning the line for the rest of the class as well as setting a
good example of what a 1st grader should look like when moving
about the classroom. The line leader should display a student
who has control of their body and mouth, not disrupting others
as they move about the school.
Door Holder- The door holder will be in charge of
holding the door for the rest of the class as well as being the
caboose to the class line. This student will be the last one to
enter the new location signifying that the whole class has made
it to the said location.
Electrician- The electricians job is to make sure that
10

when we leave the classroom that the lights are turned off to save electricity. The purpose of this job it to
explain the importance of conservation of energy to students, so that hopefully it will carry over to their
home life and students will remember to turn off lights when they leave the room.
Paper passers- There will be two paper passers that will work together to efficiently pass out papers
to the rest of the class. Passing out papers doesnt need to talk a lot of time, especially when we have such
limited time together in school. The paper passers will also be in charge of putting all the papers in students
mailboxes each day.
Teachers helper- The teachers helper can have a multitude of jobs that can range from getting
something for the teacher to making an office run.
Caretakers- The caretakers will be in charge of taking care of the class pet, this includes providing
food, water, as well as cleaning the animals home. Students will have to display they can handle the
responsibility of taking care of the pet, if assigned students cannot handle this other students will assume the
role in their place. Learning to be responsible for the life of another will not be taken lightly in my
classroom.
Field tripsField trips will be an integral part
of my classroom, whether that means we
can actually go to another location or we
get to being the field trip to us, they will
be a major part of expanding our
classroom learning. When we are leaving
the school for field trip students will have
their own laminated nametags to wear that
they got to decorate. On the name tag I
will have a sticker signifying what color,
animal, or shape group each student is in;
this way there is no debating when
students are assigned to a group. Parent volunteers for field trips will work at a first come first serve basis,
unless there is a specific circumstance that must be addressed.
SubstitutesThere will be a Sub Tub that will contain everything the sub will need while they are teaching my
class. In it they will find attendance sheets, a copy of the daily routine and schedule to keep the students on
track, as well as hanging folders for each day of the week; these will contain the lessons for the week to
make sure the teacher knows what to do incase my absence is longer
than intended. There will also be emergency lesson plans and
activities if something should need to be changed last minute. Having
a Sub Tub will make it much easier for the substitute when they
walk into the room and they only need to find one thing to teach my
class, it also allows other teachers to easily assist the substitute if I
am gone because again it is one thing. I find it easy when I can stay
organized because then others around me are organized, limiting
confusion for the substitute and the students for when I will not be
there.

11

HomeworkThere will be a homework bin near my desk where students will place all their completed homework
from the previous day of school. Students will be expected to put their homework into the bin at the start of
class each day. In order to keep students accountable for doing their homework students will be responsible
for writing their homework down in their assignment notebook at the end of each day. Then before they can
line up to leave they will need a stamp with a place to sign for their parents. I want to keep parents involved
as much as possible, by asking parents to talk to their child about their homework hopefully this will create
meaningful conversation for students and allow them to see the importance of education. At the beginning
of the school year I will put labels on each of the students take home folders to help with the organization.
The two inside pockets will be labeled To by LEFT at home and To bring RIGHT back. As we go through
our day I will be very explicate to students on which items should be put into which pockets to help students
understand the importance of items.
Free timeIf students get done with their class work early they can choose to
do an offered educational activity. When students finish they will place the
clothespin with their name on it on one of the options. For each of the free
choice options there are a limited number of students that can be doing that
option at a time. There will be 4-5 spots available for each choice, if there is
no more room left in a students first choice, they must pick another activity
to do. By having a limited number of students per choice, it will be easier to
monitor student learning and focus during this time. It will also help with
overall classroom behavior; noise level will be under control because
students have their own tasks they are working on. I will use this time to
interact with different students at this time by walking around the room and
visiting with students.
SpecialsStudents will be dismissed by tables. When a table is clean and quiet
I will dismiss the table to line up at the door. If tables or students need to
repeat the action due to inappropriate actions, I will ask those to try it again.
If lining up becomes an issue I will inform students they have been invited
to participate in Recess Academy. Recess Academy will take place during
the first part of recess to correct any negative behavior that students have
performed. In the case of lining up, students will practice lining up for
specials. Waiting quietly to be called on, walking to the line, and keeping their hands together. This will be
performed multiple times until students show improvement or time is up. It will never take more than 5-7
minutes of recess.
When picking students up from specials I will inquire about their behavior with the specials teacher.
If the specials teacher had to use a consequence due to poor behavior, I will support their tactics and remind
students they are to be respectful to all teachers.
Leaving the roomWhen students are leaving the room as a group there will be dots put in a line by the door, each
student will stand on a dot to help demonstrate personal space and to help avoid pushing amongst the
students. Due to the fact that there will be the same number of dots as students in the class students should
have no problem finding a space in line. On day when students are fidgety we will walk down the hallway as
a specific character such as, a robot, dinosaur, pencil, a 2nd grader. By giving students a character or item that
12

they have to emulate, I hope to eliminate noise and the need to touch the walls or items that we pass. When
we walk like a character or item students will know that if they are too noise or misbehave they will not be
aloud to have this experience for a week. This is a fun privilege students have and it is up to my discretion to
determine if students can handle the responsibility.
If individual students need to leave the room to go the library or the bathroom for example there will
be a clip board with each students name hanging on the wall next to the door. There will also be a basket of
clothespins next to it with different labels on them of places students may need to go through out the day.
Students will be responsible for choosing the correct clothespin to where they are going and then clipping in
on next to their name on the clipboard. After specials I will stop at the bathrooms as a class to ensure that
students have the opportunity to go when they wont be missing class. In order to learn students do need to be
present in the classroom.
Differentiation policyMy role as a teacher is to teach every child so that they may succeed in their learning. I will adjust
my teaching methods to fit students needs regardless of their gifts or challenges. I will actively work with
students, parents and colleagues to create the best learning environment for students. I am aware of the ZPD
(zone of proximal development) that each student has and will strive to reach my student where they will
learn the best. When students require adjustments I will honor them because I know that no student learns
the same. I will provide additional support and or resources for students who require it. For advanced
students I will provide extension activities or open-ended questions and responses. No student will have the
same final result, so my expectations for individual students will not be the same. I will have individual
expectations for each student because no student learns the same way.
Communicating with parentsIn order to keep parents informed I will send a note home with student telling parents of the project
that students will be working on as well as its due date. It will also include a description of the assignment so
parents know what the class will be doing. By doing this parents can be involved in helping their child be
responsible for the assignment, and clarifying any details that the child should need help on.
I will have a weekly newsletter that will be posted on my blog to inform parents what students have
done for the week, this will also include
announcements and up coming events that
they should be aware of. Pictures will be
posted to show parents of in class learning
or field trips that the students have been a
part of. If Internet is not available to some
families, I will provide a paper copy of
the newsletter to students to bring home to
their families, I dont want access to
prohibit families from understanding what
their child is learning in school.
Students will be responsible for
writing their homework in their
assignment notebooks each day. I will
come around to each student at the end of
the day to stamp the page, the stamp will
ask for a parent signature. Each day that a
student returns their assignment notebook
with a signature they will receive a sticker to place on the homework chart. The homework chart will track
students responsibility for their work. Every increment of 10 students will have the opportunity to read with
13

a friend during free reading time or sit next to a friend for one subject. This is a privilege and the teacher has
the power to take away the privilege if the students show they are not ready for the responsibility. If students
earn their 10th sticker on a day with a substitute, it will be carried over until the next day the regular teacher
is present. To ensure fairness, when each student earns the privilege a line will be drawn through the sticker
to signify they have taken their turn.
Parent conferencesI believe that every parent wants their child to succeed and to be apart of their learning process,
however, parents need accommodations in times that are offered for conferences. I will offer conferences
when the rest of the school offers them, but I will also make it known to the parents that if these times dont
work they should still contact me because I am willing to come in on weekends or go to an alternate location
in order to fit the parents needs. I am aware some parents work multiple jobs and have other children so
coming to a conference may not be the easiest thing due to having to arrange for childcare. I will encourage
parents to come to conferences together in divorce/separation cases because I believe it is important for
parents to hear the same thing at the same time. However, If this is not advised I will make adjustments to fit
the families needs.
At the start of each students conference I will begin with a positive about each child, and time for
genuine conversations that has been developed through other contacts with each students parents. When I
present the students progress to the parents, I will have an intervention plan in mind; I want the parents to
know exactly what I will be doing to help their child. There will be examples to actually show parents what
their child has been doing in class, visual progress is more meaningful than verbal progress. Throughout the
whole conference I will refrain from using teacher lingo or acronyms that parents may not be familiar
with. If I do need to use acronyms then I will have a definition to go along with it so parents will not be left
in the dark regarding their child. At the conclusion of the conference I will always ask if there are any
questions or comments, and to remind the parents they should never hesitate to reach out to me.
