Out of the many old typefaces to

choose, Caslon has to be, by far, one of
the most interesting. Created in the 1700s,
the style of Caslon was found to be similar to
that of the Dutch Baroque typefaces. After the
death of Caslon it lost some popularity, but was
revived several times throughout the ages, like in
the 1840s during the British Arts and Crafts
movement, a time of new ideas and type concepts.
Originally Caslon never had a bold font weight;
William Caslon didnt find the need for it since
bold wasnt all that used. This stayed with the font for
several revivials. When Caslon finally tranferred to

digital it had so many redesigns that, comparing the modern font to that of the 1700s, they have little
similarities. At one point typesetters stated that, When in doubt, use Caslon. Similar to Helvetica,
Caslon was very adaptable and could be used as solutions to all kinds of type and design. Benjamin
Franklin was particularly fond of this type and used it frequently. Caslon was also the typeface to be
used for the Declaration of Independace. And another fun fact: Caslon (in the True Type Caslon
Antique version) was used at the typeface for the title in the play Les Miserables.
