JMO mentoring scheme

October 2013 paper
Hints are upside down at the bottom of the page; fold the page back to view them when needed.
You will find helpful notes in sections A, B, H of Junior Mentoring resources on the UKMT website.

1.

What is the prime factorisation of 2013?

2.

Suppose two natural numbers are represented by n2 and n2 - 1. Explain which of the following must be
true and which must be false.
(a)
(c)
(e)

both are even numbers;

both numbers are divisible by 4;
the sum of the numbers is even.

(b)
(d)

both are odd numbers;

exactly one of the numbers is divisible by 4;

3.

ABCD is a rectangle such that AB = 1 and AD = 2. An arc of a circle with centre D and radius 2 is
drawn inside the rectangle so that it cuts BC at E. What is the length of CE?

4.

The fact that 5 = 2 + 3 shows that some prime numbers can be written as the sum of two other prime
numbers. How many prime numbers can be written as the sum of two prime numbers in different
ways. (2 + 3 and 3 + 2 are not considered different.)

5.

A sealed envelope contains a card with a single digit on it. Three of the following statements are true
and the other is false:
(A) the digit is 1;

(B)

the digit is 2;

(C)

the digit is not 3;

(D) the digit is not 4.

Which of the following must be correct?

(i) A is false;
(iv) C is false;

(ii)
(v)

B is true;
D is true;

(iii)

B is false;

6.

In the addition sum (left hand column represents hundreds as normal) :

T
A
P
+ B A
T
+ M A
N
each (different) letter stands for a different digit and no hundreds digit is zero. What is the smallest
sum that can be obtained?

7.

In the equation 2u + v + w + x + y + z = 3, the numbers u, v, w, x, y and z are non-negative integers.

How many solutions does this equation have? List the solutions as briefly as possible.

8.

Which are these numbers are the same as (20002000)?

(a)

(b)

10002000

(c)

(20 5)2000

(d)

200020 5.

A rectangle has perimeter p and area A. The sum of the lengths of the two diagonals is L. Prove :
8A = p2 - L2.

Prime factorisation is best illustrated by an example. E.g. 360 = 23 32 5.

You will need Pythagorass rule. Mathematically it is better to write numbers like 2 in this form than try to express them
in decimals because the decimal expression is infinite. This is a case of an irrational number.
A table showing the truth or falsity of each statement for various sealed numbers will help.
This is about finding how many ways you can arrange similar answers.
If you are not sure about indices, try working with smaller numbers first. E.g. what are (26) and ( 2)10 ?
You might find it helpful to take the lengths of the sides of the rectangle as x and y and work with these.
