Dear Valued Sponsor what if....

What if you and your spouse/significant other or a couple you knew, carried a gene that could cause
your future children to be born with a painful, organ damaging, life-long, chronic disease? What if
neither of you were aware that your genetic makeup contained such a gene, until AFTER your precious,
highly anticipated, bundle of joy was already conceived? Youd be devastated, correct? Youd be
hopeful to beat the odds and believe that your baby would be born not affected by this mutated gene,
right? How would you feel, if despite all of your positive thinking and beliefs your child IS BORN with the
painful, organ damaging, life-long, chronic disease called Sickle Cell Disease?
This What If scenario, turned into a What Now reality for me and my family and describes exactly
how I felt when I learned that my child was born with sickle cell anemia, also referred to as Sickle Cell
Disease (SCD), Type SS. My name is Dr. Lametra Scott, Executive Director and Founder of the non-profit
organization Breaking The SSickle Cell Cycle Foundation, Inc. BTSSCycle (www.btsscycle.org) is a nonprofit organization that promotes awareness, education, and prevention of sickle cell disease within the
Nashville community through education and service.
What is SCD?
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects nearly 100,000 people in the United States.
When a person inherits two hemoglobin S genes, Hemoglobin SS, the disease is called sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to form into a crescent shape, like a sickle. The sickle-shaped
red blood cells break apart easily, causing anemia. The damaged sickle red blood cells also clump
together and stick to the walls of blood vessels, blocking blood flow. This can cause severe pain and
permanent damage to the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, bones, and spleen. These pain attacks can
occur without warning, and a person often needs to go to the hospital for effective treatment.
Sickle cell disease is a life-long illness. The severity of the disease varies widely from person to person.
At the present time, there is not a medication available to cure SCD; bone marrow transplantation is
the only cure for SCD. Unfortunately, most people with SCD are either too old for a transplant or dont
have a relative who is a good enough genetic match for them to act as a donor. Increasing awareness
and education are the keys to breaking the cycle of sickle cell disease.
How can YOU help Break The Cycle of Sickle Cell Disease?
Help Support the 2nd Annual Break The Cycle Sickle Cell Bowl-A-Thon hosted by Breaking The SSickle

Sincerely,
Dr. Lametra Scott
