Block ___________
SB1. Students will analyze the nature of the relationships between
structures and functions in living cells.
a. Explain the role of cell organelles for both prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells, including the cell membrane, in maintaining
homeostasis and cell reproduction.

What does a Cell Look Like?

Materials:
Modeling Clay/ Play Dough
Procedures:
STEP 1- Assign group member responsibilities.
Group Member #1: Gather information from the group and create a sketch of the
cell that you will create.
Group Member #2: Gather the materials for the cell construction.
Group Member #3: Present the cell model.
Group Member #4: Clean up and put up cell model materials.
Note: All group members must be involved in discussion of what the cell should
look like and what it should contain. All group members should contribute to the
making of the cell using the materials. If you have less than 4 group members
you should assign the left over duties to group members.
STEP 2- On the back of this paper draw a sketch of what your cell model will look like.
STEP 3- Using the above materials construct a model of a cell.
STEP 4- Answer the following questions below in the space provided.
1. What is the shape of a cell? __________________________________________
2. What is the function of a cell? ________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
3. Are cells single or do they work in groups? _____________________________
4. What type of cell is your model? ______________________________________
Extend and Refine:
Once you have completed this activity I will talk about cell structures and their functions.
We will revisit this model.
