Background:
NetBackup 6.5.1
In order for the Netbackup Media server to see the Data Domain Appliance on a private interface,
the modification of the hosts file may be needed:
The hosts file is found in the Windows\system32\drivers\etc directory and will have something
similar to the following:
dd690s.local.net
dd690s
192.168.1.11
dd690s-eth0.local.net
dd690s-eth0
192.168.1.12
dd690s-eth1.local.net
dd690s-eth1
dd690r
NOTE: On the Data Domain appliance, the commands will need to be entered to tell the Data
Domain appliance the private interface of the NetBackup Media server (net hosts <ip> <host
list>).
1) Click on START and then RUN and type the UNC of the Data Domain appliance (or IP
address) and click OK:
NOTE: If a prompt appears looking for username and password this indicates the
account/password are mismatched or there may be some issue with network routing.
1) Navigate to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstaion\parameters
2) If the SESSTIMEOUT key does not exist, click in the right panel and select New and DWORD
value. Create a new DWORD Value, SESSTIMEOUT. Note: The registry is case sensitive.
Use all caps for the new DWORD name.
3) Double click on the DWORD Value (or existing) DWORD Value.
4) Click the Decimal button and then, in the Base box, set the DWORD value to 3600.
5) Open REGEDT32 and navigate to:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters
6) Add a new DWORD value named DefaultSendWindow and set the value to 262144
(decimal).
7) Add a new DWORD value named DefaultReceiveWindow and set the value to 262144
(decimal).
8) Within REGEDT32, navigate to the following location:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces
11) Add a new DWORD value named GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize and set the value to 262144
(decimal).
12) Add a new DWORD value named TcpWindowSize and set the value to 262144 (decimal).
13) Add a new DWORD value named Tcp1323Opts and set the value to 3.
14) Restart the Windows server.
1) Right click on My Computer and click Manage Computer and find the services listed above
and modify the Log On tab:
2) In order for the changes to take affect, the three services (and any dependencies will need to
be recycled).
3) Ensure no jobs are currently running by viewing the Activity Monitor in NetBackup prior to
restarting the services.
Optionally, the following commands can be used to bring down all the NetBackup services:
\veritas\netbackup\bin\Bpdown f v
And then \veritas\netbackup\bin\Bpup f v
To bring the services back online.
4) The calculation needs to be done for the NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK file and heres
how its calculated:
The parameter is the number of data buffers. The default value for this is 16. The Data
Domain tech note says to set it to 32. At this value of 32, Netbackup will use 32*256k*20
streams (if that is the maximum stream count) = 164 MB of memory for netbackup buffers.
This is a very small amount of memory since we recommend customers to have dedicated
Media Servers with at least 4 GB of RAM. Instead of giving a fixed value it is much better to
calculate the number of disk buffers based on available physical memory.
In the case of a dedicated Media Server, it is safe to assume that we can use at least half of
the available physical memory for Netbackup Buffers.
The formula used to calculate the value is:
Physical Memory / max # streams [tape streams + disk streams] /
SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK
For example with 3 GB of RAM, 20 total Netbackup streams and 256k buffer size the formula
gives a number of 307 (using KiB units). This is a vast difference from the default 16.
At this point the client should be the bottleneck unless there are additional IP configurations
needed
VII. NetBackup
Now that connectivity and performance options have been set, the rest is done thru the
NetBackup administration console.
1) Bring up the NetBackup Administration Console
2) From the NetBackup Administration Console, right click on Storage Units and select New
Storage Unit
3) From the New Storage Unit window, enter a name to identify the Storage unit name
4) For Storage unit type, select Disk. Disk type is Basic Disk
5) For the Media Server, select the server that is going to be used as a client to the restorer.
The absolute path would be the UNC path to the restorer \backup share
6) To increase the number of concurrent streams that the disk storage unit can accommodate,
change the default value for Maximum concurrent jobs
7) Leave the Reduce fragment size to and the rest of the settings at the defaults
8) Click on the OK button when done. You should see the newly created device in Storage Units
if successful (see below).
9) To use the newly created disk storage unit, go to the Policies section and change the existing
policy or create a new one. The example in this document changes an existing policy
10) Right click on the policy you want changed and choose Change. A Change Policy window
should appear
11) Change the Policy storage unit to the newly created disk storage unit and click on OK
12) To make sure that the disk storage unit is working, run a manual backup. To do a manual
backup, click on the policy you just edited and choose Manual backup. If more than one
schedule or more than one client appears, select the full schedule and the client for which
you want to run the test
13) Click the OK button to start the backup. Once the backup starts, you can monitor the activity
in the Activity Monitor section
