A study on Archaelogical Research on Tamil History

Introduction to the research


Archaeology is the study that provides information on ancient peoples life
style and culture from the evidence left behind by them .In the year 1920, a
missionary by name Henry Heras,commenced Archaeological Research into the
Mohenjo-daro and Harappa civilizations. Thus began Archaeological Research in
India. Archaeological research served as guidance to the writing of the History of
India.After the linguistic division in the year 1956, Nehru directed the setting up of
archaeological research in all the States. Among the researches undertaken in
Tamilnadu, two are remarkable. They are
Arikkamedu Research and
ManachaNalloor Research.
Also
scholars
like
M.Ragavaiyyangar
,
N.M.
VenkatswamyNadar,
SathasivaPandaarathaar, MayilaiSeeni, Venkatswamy, SundaresaVandaiyar wrote
articles in the issues of Tamil NattilSenthamizh and Tamil Pozhil about the stone
carvings.
This is a vital task because these are the sources to indicate the classical status of
Tamil as well as for the historical study of Dravidian.
Area of Research
This research is a broad reading work and a less field work. Under the feld of
Archaelogy, this research comes under descriptive study of the particular
language and tradition.

Objective of research
The objective of this article is to have a detailed study on various archaeological
research done on rich heritage and glorious traditions of tamilnadu with its classical
inscriptions,monuments,art,sculpture and excavation at historical sites. Its activities
were expanded to refer Epigraphy.
Sample or Focus of study
Our focus of study includes Research books published on Indus valley and
Mohenjo-daro , The 18 Historical Stone Carvings of South India by Sewell and
Mackenzie and The Collection of Letters of Harappan Writing by Iravadham
Mahadevan .

Books on the renowned research in Adhichanallur,Arikkamedu and ManachaNalloor


which

Carvings,
Copper
plates,Tombstones,Treasures and Excavation will act as major focus of work.

Limitations of the research


Amazing sculptures, stone carvings and ruins of buildings were found in Nalanda,
Dakshila, Pataliputra, and Kosambi in India.The limitations are concentrated in the
area of coins, letters, urns, rocks, idols, stone carvings and copper plates,which talks
about tamil language and its traditions and the rest is left out exceptionally.

Approaches of Research
The area of research itself indicates this as one of the Qualitative approach.
It involves extensive narrative data in order to gains insights into phenomena . It is
driven by curiosity or interest in a subject with Extensive archaeology review.

Process of Research
The researcher who undertakes this research is going to read and analyse
the books related to historical excavations of several sites and Inscriptions found
on caves and pottery as another source .

Use of Research
At the end of this work, many evidences for the understanding of ancient
tamil history may be dragged. There is a idea for the researcher to give many
referential data in the appendix which will be very helpful for the researchers of
tamil and its traditions.
