Acrylic Impact Modifiers (AIM)

For Rigid PVC Applications

DURASTRENGTH

Typical Acrylic Impact Modifier Structure

-Crosslinked rubbery core of PBA (Tg = -45C)

-Rigid shell of PMMA (Tg = 100C)

PMMA shell role:

- powder flowability and bulk delivery
- good compatibility with PVC matrix dispersion
- PVC gelation promotion
PBA core:
- The active phase for impact strengthening

Shear yielding mechanism

Stress concentration

Shear yielding (plastic deformation) of the PVC matrix is

controlled by AIM particles through stress concentration

PVC specificities
PVC is a unique polymer: formulation and incomplete fusion (gelation)
complicate analysis of structure/property relationships
e.g.: CaCO3 filler affects mechanical behaviour and contributes to impact strength in
synergy with impact modifier

D362 vs D36X

DHC : +10% (residual thermal stability

test)
CWS* (Corner Weld Strength): +30%
Charpy impact strength: +15%
Faster gelation,
Wider processing window
Improved powder properties (Higher
Bulk density and flowability)

* CWS improvement was measured in Ca/Zn formulations
