Recommendation: Keep it Straight and Simple (KISS)
1. Complex security settings can cause confusion, reduce team
collaboration and increase time required for site administration.
2. Avoid special or unique permission settings on Document
Library, Lists or Individual web parts. If it is absolutely
necessary, document the access settings in the description
area and always have a backup site administrator with Full
Control access
3. Do NOT edit the default security level without creating a
backup.
4. Recommend granting "Add all authenticated users" the READ
p
permission.
5. Recommend enabling the "Allow Access Request" function by
entering the site owners email address in the "Access
Requests" area.

Most Common Mistakes in SharePoint

Do not use special Characters in Site, Folder & File names
Avoid following characters: \ / : * ? " < > | # { } % & <TAB>" ~ +

Cannot start a site name, sub-site name, or a site group name with an underscore (_) character or
with the period character (I recommend avoiding the (_) underscore in site names)

Cannot use the period character consecutively in the middle of a site name

Cannot use the period character at the end of a site name

Longer is not always Better

File and Folder name lengths cannot be longer than 128 Characters

List item links are restricted to 256 characters and will truncate links
to SharePoint documents (or anything else) with lengths longer than
this.
this

When storing files, the structure and files (entire path including sites,
folders, and file name) cannot add up to more than 260 characters
or they will result in an error message or validation error with the
explanation around the URL length
length.
