Every two years, the Olympic and Paralympic Games bring the countries of the
world together in a celebration of the human spirit and global friendship. Founded
on the principle of promoting peace through sport, the Olympic and Paralympic
Games have become the most far-reaching and unifying event on earth.
Pictograms have been part of Olympic Games design since they were first
introduced at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. The stylized symbols and figures
easily communicate information and provide direction to visitors, participants and
athletes who have diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Traditionally,
pictograms represent all of the Olympic and Paralympic sport events and many
of the disciplines within them. They are used in the wayfinding system to
provide directions for venues, special sites such as victory celebration sites and
access/information points for general services.
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Sport Pictogram program will be
an integral part of the Games graphic image and brand identity. In recent Games,
pictograms have been applied to far more than maps and informational signage,
and have been prominently featured in Games communications, promotional
materials, licensed products, broadcast graphics and the Look of the Games
that beautifies the Host Region and competition venues at Games time. These
wide-ranging applications drove the design of the one-of-a-kind Vancouver 2010
Sport Pictogram system.
