WINDOW UNIT A.C.

Window Air Conditioner

Technically called a unitary air conditioning system, a window air conditioner is a self-contained air
conditioning unit, which means that it is equipped with
all of the necessary components such as the
condenser, compressor, expansion valve, etc. A
window air conditioner can be placed in a
window or through a measured and prepared hole
in
an exterior wall, but they are most often placed in
windows by sitting on the top of the window frame in
a
partially opened window because adding holes to
your exterior walls is not usually recommended.
Window air conditioners are commonly used for
single rooms as they eject heat out of one end and
blow cool air in on the other end.

Through-the-Wall Air Conditioners

Through-the-wall air conditioners are very much like window air conditioners, but as their purpose is to
condition the air from within a chassis sleeve in a
wall, their housing design, cooling capacity, and
weight diverge from window air conditioners.
Through-the-wall air conditioners often weigh
slightly more and have higher cooling capacities
than window A/C units, and they can achieve a
more streamlined appearance by being installed
flush with the wall. In order to preserve their
efficiency, through-the-wall units do not have
venting mechanisms on both sides of the housing
because their venting grilles would be blocked.

Ductless Mini-Split System Air Conditioners

Mini-split systems, very popular in other countries, can be an attractive retrofit option for room additions
and for houses without ductwork, such as those using hydronic heat (see the heating section). Like
conventional central air conditioners, mini-splits use an outside compressor/condenser and indoor air
handling units. The difference is that each room or zone to be cooled has its own air handler. Each indoor
unit is connected to the outdoor unit via a conduit carrying the power and refrigerant lines. Indoor units
are typically mounted on the wall or ceiling.
The major advantage of a ductless mini-split is its flexibility in cooling individual rooms or zones. By
providing dedicated units to each space, it is easier to meet the varying comfort needs of different rooms.
By avoiding the use of ductwork, ductless mini-splits also avoid energy losses associated with central
forced-air systems.
The primary disadvantage of mini-splits is cost. They cost much more than a typical central air
conditioner of the same size, where ductwork is already in place. But, when considering the cost and
energy losses associated with installing new ductwork for a central air conditioner, buying a ductless
mini-split may not be such a bad deal, especially considering the long-term energy savings. Talk with
your contractor about what option would be most cost-effective for you.

Basic Refrigeration Cycle

Principles of Refrigeration

Liquids absorb heat when changed from liquid to gas

Gases give off heat when changed from gas to liquid.

For an air conditioning system to operate with economy, the refrigerant must be used repeatedly. For this
reason, all air conditioners use the same cycle of compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation
in a closed circuit. The same refrigerant is used to move the heat from one area, to cool this area, and to
expel this heat in another area.

The refrigerant comes into the compressor as a low-pressure gas, it is compressed and then moves
out of the compressor as a high-pressure gas.

The gas then flows to the condenser. Here the gas condenses to a liquid, and gives off its heat to
the outside air.

The liquid then moves to the expansion valve under high pressure. This valve restricts the flow of
the fluid, and lowers its pressure as it leaves the expansion valve.

The low-pressure liquid then moves to the evaporator, where heat from the inside air is absorbed
and changes it from a liquid to a gas.

As a hot low-pressure gas, the refrigerant moves to the compressor where the entire cycle is
repeated.

Note that the four-part cycle is divided at the center into a high side and a low side This refers to the
pressures of the refrigerant in each side of the system

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

Two types of many air conditioning systems are window and split type. First is the window type air
conditioning or Technically called a unitary air conditioning system is a self-contained air conditioning
unit, which means that it is equipped with all of the necessary components such as the condenser,
compressor, expansion valve and many more. This type of air conditioner are commonly used for single
rooms as they release heat out of one end and blow cool air in on the other end. While a split type air
conditioning system uses an outside compressor/condenser and an indoor air handling units. The indoor
unit is connected to the outdoor unit via a conduit carrying the power and refrigerant lines. The Indoor
units are usually placed on the wall or ceiling.
Diagram of refrigeration cycle tackles about the evaporator and the condenser. The evaporator is when
heat is transferred from inside air to the refrigerant and condenser is where heat is transferred from the
refrigerant to the outside air. The process are the refrigerant comes into the compressor as a low-pressure
gas then it is compressed and then moves out of the compressor as a high-pressure gas. The gas then
flows to the condenser. Here the gas condenses to a liquid, and gives off its heat to the outside air. The
liquid then moves to the expansion valve under high pressure. This valve restricts the flow of the fluid,
and lowers its pressure as it leaves the expansion valve. The low-pressure liquid then moves to the
evaporator, where heat from the inside air is absorbed and changes it from a liquid to a gas. As a hot lowpressure gas, the refrigerant moves to the compressor where the entire cycle is repeated.

In my opinion, The window type air conditioning system can be greatly used in rooms of houses as where
it is not daily used or used every time while the split type air conditioning system can be used in rooms
which occupies more users as its capacity is higher than the window type air conditioning. The cycle of
refrigeration talks about how the cycle of the air flows happen and how an air conditioning system
function.
