INTRODUCTION:
Mishra Dhatu Nigam limited (MIDHANI) is a public sector undertaking under the
ministry of Defence established at Hyderabad. Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (MIDHANI) is
the Brainchild of Late DR. R.V.THAMANKAR of DMRL and it is located at
Kanchanbagh in Hyderabad was incorporated in 1973.
The Government of India Enterprise is one of the unique, modern and integrated
metallurgical plants for manufacturing a wide range of special metal and alloys
.MIDHANI is one of the few metallurgical plants of its kind in the world, design to
manufacture a wide range of special metals and alloys using integrated and highly
flexible manufacturing system. Strategic sector served by MIDHANI includes space,
defence, aeronautics, nuclear power and kindred industries. MIDHANI manufacturers
high-grade metal for Indians main battle tank (MBT), planes and before guns.
MIDHANIS product range includes super alloys, titanium alloy, tungsten, molybdenum
etc in a variety of mill forms.
MIDHANI is the only manufacturing in the country producing commercially pure
titanium and a host of titanium alloys for a wide range of industrial applications , both
of commercial and strategic nature . Most of the products of MIDHANI are import
substitution for the automobile , electrical, telecommunication , petrochemicals, lamp
and general engineering industries.
Though it was incorporated in 1973, commencement of ground work took place in 1976
and commercial production started in 1983. But the company started earning Profits from
1987. The initial investment in the company was 123 crores and the annual sales turnover
is 115-120 crores.

company ,USA for supply of titanium and super alloys for the aircraft .
MIDHANI is a Public Sector enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry
of Defence. The Company is managed by a Board of Directors. The Chairman &
Managing Director and the full time Director (Production & Marketing) & Director

HIGHLIGHTS OF MIDHANI
MIDHANI is a unique metallurgical plant with some of the most advanced
facilities available under one roof it has acquired the latest and modern equipments for
manufacture of its products mix.

Melt Shop: Melt shops comprise 5T Air arc melting furnace,2.2.T Air induction
melting and Refining furnaces respectively, 4T vacuum Arc Remitting furnace
and 10T Electro slag
remitting furnace. These
furnaces play a vital role
in manufacturing alloys
with close compositional
control, metallurgical
cleanliness, and
homogeneity.

Titanium Shop:
Titanium one of the
important product of this
plant has excellent
strength to weight ratio
and anti-corrosion properties MIDHANI has a lot vacuum arc remitting furnace
for the production of ingots up to 6.5T for electrode preparation 3000T arc
welding unit is available. High vacuum annealing furnace is available for
annealing of Titanium and various products.

Forge Shop: Two-column 1500T capacity computer controlled press operating

with two rail bound manipulators for forging ingots is the nerve of production
process. One 1500 kg hammer and one 750 kg hammer is
available for smaller jobs.

Cold Rolling Mills: For cold Rolling 4 hi strip mill 6 hi

sheet wills 12hi strip mill and 20 hi foil mill arc available
besides facilities like continuous annealing furnaces,
finishing lines for slitting and strip grinding.

Bar & Wire Drawing Shop: The shop is equipped with

bull block wire drawing machines wet wire drawing
machines, wet wire drawing machines, Annealing lines,

draw

polishing straightening and cut-to-length machines to

wires down to 0.02 mm dia.

Power Metallurgy: Super fine powders of tungsten and molybdenum are

compacted in 600 T pres, swaged and drawn into fine
wires.

Quality Control: Midhani give paramount importance for

quality standards of its products. Its has to supply material

JOB WORKS :
Forging, Rolling, Heat Treatment, Investment Castings, and Other conversion jobs are
carried out by Midhani for its customers.
TESTING & MATERIAL EVALUATION :
A comprehensive range of testing and evaluation services covering chemical analysis,
mechanical, non-destructive and magnetic testing are rendered by Midhani.
These include X-Ray, Atomic Absorption, Optical Emission & Ultra-voilet visible
Spectrometry and gas analysis. Universal, Creep & Fatigue testing, Fracture toughness
evaluation, Ultrasonic, Eddy Current, Magnetic, Dye-Penetrant, Radiography Hysteresis
graph, Core Loss testing etc are also carried out.
Sophisticated services dedicated to testing and evaluation of aeronautical materials
and components are also offered by Midhani. Mechanical testing services include Tensile
& Compressive Testing at ambient, elevated and cryogenic temperatures, low cycle
fatigue testing up to 10000C, Stress Rupture Testing and Creep Strain Determination up to
10500C, Rotating Bending Fatigue Test at ambient and elevated temperatures, Plain Strain
Fracture Toughness (K1C) & J1C Testing, measurement of Fatigue Crack Propogation
Rates, Impact and Hardness Testing.
Metallography services include specimen preparation, Optical Microscopy, In-situ
Metallography, Phase analysis by Microhardness testing. Chemical compositional
analysis is carried out using X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, semi-quantitative analysis

product-mix and developed over 100 grades to meet the felt need of
strategic and commercial sectors. Through generation of an in-depth
understanding of the Processing - Structure Evolution - Material
Performance / Behaviour interrelationships, MIDHANI has

including manufacture of Maraging Steel surpassing international

ISO DEVELOPMENT TARGETS:

Superiority of Titanium Over Other Implant Materials:
An implant should have a high fatigue strength, besides
extremely high corrosion resistance and bio-compatibility
Titanium has outstanding strength to weight ratio and immunity
to body fluids.
Titanium has a higher fatigue strength than many other metals
The unique quality of titanium prove to be MRI and CT compatible.
The modulus of elasticity of titanium is about half that of stainless steel and Cr-Co-Mo
alloys.
Passivation film and pitting after long periods in the body is scarcely possible for cast
cobalt chromium alloy but impossible for titanium.
