DUMSTER RENTALS

DUMPSTER?

USEFUL FACTS CONCERNING THE TOWN OF SALEM, NEW YORK. For those unfamiliar with Salem, these
pages will offer insight into what makes Salem special.

Looking to locate? Why not Salem, New York?

We asked Seth Pitts, Salems Town Supervisor, that same question. He was eager to relay his affection for what he
calls this beautiful little town.
Seth has been a life-long resident of Salem, having graduated from Salem High School (Washington Academy) which
he believes is still one of the best in the area. The classes are small and each student receives the attention he or she
needs. (He recently attended his 40th graduation reunion.) The school offers an excellent curriculum and excellent
sports and arts programs. The Salem Generals are always very competitive.
As Town Supervisor Seth is placing great emphasis on internet and telephone access for Salem residents and students. The internet is an essential tool for education, today. We are continuing to upgrade the services to accommodate the internet needs of our people.
To save taxes, the Village of Salem recently dissolved and consolidated services with the Town of Salem. That
move, Seth says, has saved village residents considerable money, because it eliminates a level of government that was
simply duplicating efforts to provide essential services. The village residents do have to clean the sidewalks in front of
their homes and are responsible for arranging for disposal of garbage and recycling. But, the savings have far out
weighed these inconveniences. Street lighting had been a bone of contention, because only a few were benefitting
from those lights, but everyone was taxed for them. Now, only those benefiting are assessed the costs. A lot fairer.
Seth mentioned, Those folks looking for quality housing can find good homes here at very reasonable prices.
Because of the reasonable prices and relative quality, houses do not stay on the market very long here. The local
banks are responsive to mortgaging needs and other financial services. The village has a water system in place and is
seeking a grant to put in a sewer system. In every way we try to be fiscally responsible while providing essential
services.
We also have a good number of small businesses that provide essential goods and services to our residents. And, as
far as emergency services go, our volunteer fire company is putting the finishing touches on a new fire house. Our EMS
personnel are trained and responsive.
Salem residents are delightfully community minded. Whenever any kind of trauma (like a house fire) is suffered by
anyone, just about everyone pitches in some way to help out.
The town has several programs to offer its residents. One of
Seths favorite programs is the Lunch, Learn & Play Program
that the town sponsors each summer. The program provides
activities for the local children during each week day. He says,
We pick the children up at 8:30am and take them to Lake Lauderdale Campground for swimming and beach activities. Then,
lunch is served and activities continue until 5:30pm. This is a
wonderful program because it gets the kids off the couch, out
doors, allows them to socialize and exercise.
Another of Seths favorite programs is the local Food Pantry
which is supported in part by the Community Garden located in
back of what use to be the Countys Court House and is now a
community center.
The Community Garden, managed by Dottie Schiender, provides food for those who need it and to the Food Pantry. Seth
says, The Food Pantry supplies many local needy families with
essential nutrients year round. Every Saturday 9:30-11am food
may be picked up, or an appointment may be made to do the
same. 518-791-8485. Last month we picked up and distributed 12 tons of food through The Pantry.
Salem is centrally located to all kinds of activities, including
skiing in Vermont, snowmobiling on maintained trails, water sports
in local lakes and Lake George, shopping and the arts in
Bennington and Saratoga or Glens Falls (Also including some
right in town).

If you step from the Union Depot in Troy into a Delaware and
Hudson car attached to the 5p.m. express on the Fitchburg Railroad,
you will find yourself in the prettiest town in Northern New York.
These words, written by a correspondent to the Troy Daily Press in
1888 about Salem, still ring true.
The Salem of today, with its communities of Salem, Shushan and
Eagleville, has changed little.
Salem was settled in 1762 by pioneers from Massachusetts and
Scotland. In 1776, Salem became the home of the Charlotte County
and White Creek Revolutionary War militia, and later in 1862, the
recruiting home for the Civil War New York State Volunteer 123rd
Regiment. Monuments and graves of these wars are found in the
Revolutionary War and Evergreen Cemeteries in Salem.
Salem, with its 18th and 19th century architecture, contains a
variety of businesses, including restaurants, gift shops, antique
centers, farm stands and art galleries.
Family fun includes outdoor experiences of canoeing, swimming,
camping, hiking and fishing. Live performances for adults and
children are found at the Fort Salem Theater, The Mettawee Theatre
and Music from Salem. Three classic wooden, covered bridges span
the Battenkill and are open to the public.
Agriculture continues to dominate the rural setting, but modern
farming and related agri-businesses now dot the countryside in
addition to dairy, potato and sheep farming. Farm stands selling
sweet corn, raspberries, blueberries, maple syrup, dried flowers,
wool and angora spinning materials, offer local products to all.
A historical courthouse is located here. Public services include the
Bancroft Library, Salem Fire Department and Salem Rescue Squad.
Professional services include lawyers, doctors and Glens Falls
Hospital Health Center. A K - 12 Central School System serves the
needs of all Salem School District children.
Salem is the home of Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Pauls
Episcopal Church, United Presbyterian and Methodist churches
plus Shushans Presbyterian and Methodist churches.
Special interest and community services organizations include
Senior Citizens, Dr. Asa Fitch Historical Society, Salem Rotary
Club, Francis Clark American Legion Post, General John

Williams Salem DAR, Salem Womans Club, Shushan Covered

Bridge Museum, Georgi Art Museum, The Knights of
Columbus, The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Village Park
Committee.
Salem continues to be a community combining the friendliness of
its citizens with the purity of its natural beauty in a peaceful
setting.

SALEM CENTRAL SCHOOL Serves the towns of Salem, Hebron,

Shushan, Jackson, Greenwich, New York and Rupert, VT
Washington Academy, founded in 1780, later becoming Salem
Central School, was among the first secondary schools in New
York State. Maintaining quality educational programs has always
been given a high priority. The districts buildings retain the charm
of its early architecture and unique beginning.
The Salem Central School District has an enrollment of
approximately 541 students, K-12, on one central campus. This
includes students from the neighboring town of Rupert who are
enrolled in the secondary level program as part of a unique
relationship with the state of Vermont. The students in the
elementary school are served by classroom teachers, as well as fulltime professional personnel in the areas of art, music, physical
education, and library science.
The K-6 structure offers traditional classes as well as a
departmentalized approach in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade.
Programs in Reading Recovery and mentoring help to illustrate the
emphasis placed on preparing students to become successful
lifelong learners in a competitive society.
Salems Washington Academy is comprised of grades 7-12 and
strives to meet the needs of all students. More than 85% of
students graduate from the 12th grade. More than seventy five
percent of the student body typically chooses to pursue post
secondary education. Others seek added skills training, enter the
job market, or enlist in the military.
In the Jr./Sr. High, teachers guide students in academic,
occupational, fine arts, and special education areas. Instruction in a
second language (Spanish) begins in the seventh grade. Highlighting
an excellent agricultural program is an on-site greenhouse in the
high school courtyard. Expanded computer lab facilities provide
students with the opportunity to develop this important
technological skill. In addition, Advanced Placement English,
History, Psychology, Biology and Calculus are available to
students in their junior and senior years.
There are a total of 82 teachers in the school; 6 serving special
needs.
Dr. David Glover, District Superintendent, says, The parents in
this school district are very attentive to the educational needs of
our students, which makes our job much more effective. I have
never seen, in all my years of serving education, a more
enthusiastic scholastic atmosphere. This school does a tremendous
job to prepare students for their futures. In fact, the school is doing
so well it has been awarded academic achievement recognition,
having received silver medals from US News & World Report,
through its school ranking program. I think that is outstanding!

SALEMS COMMUNITY
GARDEN MISSION
STATEMENT
The Courthouse Community
Garden (CCG) includes an
enthusiastic group of individuals that have come together under a
larger 501 (c) (3) organization, the Historic Salem Courthouse
Preservation Association, Inc. (The Courthouse Community Center)
to plant a garden on a parcel of land adjacent to the Courthouse
Community Center campus in Salem, New York, a rural community
in Washington County.
The CCG program, in its broadest definition offers opportunities to
teach youth of all ages to grow, process, and market food,
developing intergenerational community relationships. The CCG
working group has included the following objectives:
grow vegetables that will be donated to our local food pantry;
provide a business venture for local teens and agriculture students,
where they would learn how to grow and sell at our local farmers
market, take any seasons profits and roll over into next season;
teach the science of gardening to include soil testing and cycle;
serve as an activity/provide opportunities for education through the
Courthouse summer Lunch-n-Learn program;
dovetail with seasonal cooking classes at the Battenkill Kitchen (a
shared-use facility for start-up food businesses and culinary ed);
provide multiple entry points for volunteers to include teaching,
tending, etc.;
offer opportunities to partner with other organizations like the
Salem Central School, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master
Gardener program, Ag Stewardship Association, neighboring
community gardens;
provide a source for herbs and flowers for our annual Courthouse
Al Fresco dinner (a community dinner sourced completely from
local farms that serves over 400 people); and
speak to broader issues of sustainability in our community.

SALEMS NEW FIRE HOUSE

Bob Graham, Salem Volunteer Fire Departments Chief, is proud of
the new firehouse, located on Route 22, south of the main village
area. Bob has served as Chief since 2008 and helps coordinate a total
of 37 other volunteers. When the fire whistle goes off, whoever can
show up, shows up, Bob stated.
There are four bays for our 4 trucks, and we hope to begin using
the building the 3rd week of October. A good number of our
volunteers have pitched in to help build this facility. We all owe
them gratitude for their efforts. By the way, Bob mentioned,
we were able to take the 1800s vintage bell from its tower on the
old fire station, and have placed it on top of the new firehouse. We
will be using it! Bob invites everyone who can contribute in
anyway to join the Salem Fire Department as a volunteer. Give
whatever time you can afford, he said. Come by on Tuesdays
6:30-8:30pm.
The Town also has an Emergency Medical unit, in a separate
building, headed up by Captain Vickie Campbell.

A Brief History of the Bancroft Public Library in Salem, NY

The Beginning
Our library was opened December 5, 1891. Melville Dewey, the secretary of the library
department at the State University of New York, signed the Certificate of Registry for the
library, dated February 14, 1896.
The library was named after Benjamin F. Bancroft, banker and benefactor of the community
in the mid-to-late 19th century.
The Starting Collection
A unique collection of Natural History books was donated in memory of Hiram Walker
(whom passed away in 1870). The Walker Collection, as it was called, contained over 400
books. The majority of these books were on Ornithology.
Ornithology was epidemic in early 20th century Salem. The infamous John James Audubon
had a granddaugher whom lived in Salem. Marie R. Audubon lived in Salem from 1890 to
1925. In 1897, she published her grandfathers journals, which are still available today in
the librarys Audubon Collection.
The fire of 1976
In January of 1976, a structure fire destroyed the upper floors of the Proudfit building.
Thanks to the heroic effort of the Salem Fire Department and volunteer townspeople, about
1/4 of the library collection was saved. Included in the survivors was nearly the whole Local
History collection, bound newspapers, and rare books dating back to the early days of
Salem.
The 1976 fire was later determined to have been caused by an electrical fault.
The modern library
The first floor of the Proudfit building was saved, and now houses the library. We now boast
a collection of over 20,000 items, 7 public computers with high-speed Internet, and a

Revolutionary War Cemetery

Salem, first caIled White Creek and then New Perth, was settled in
August 1764 by Scottish pioneers from PeIham, Massachusetts. In
the year 2000, the cemetery was mapped and the graves identified
and indexed through a Student Learn and Serve Grant.
In the spring of 1766, Dr. Thomas Clark arrived with his Scotch-Irish
Presbyterian congregation from Ballybay, Ireland. The two groups
cooperated in settling this territory and soon determined that a
common burying ground was needed. This burying ground was
Salems only public burying ground until the Evergreen Cemetery was established on March 5, 1859
According to LocaI History, the first burial was that of an Indian who wandered into the settlement and died. The first
settler to be burial here was Solomon Barr. The location of these two graves is unknown. The earliest engraved
tombstone is that of Abram Savage of the prominent Savage family. He died in 1769, and at age 17 was the youngest
burial. The oldest person buried here was John McNish who died in 1821 at the age 104. The last burial was that of
John E. Gillis who died in 1921.
Local legend has it that After the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, about 100 soldiers bodies were loaded like cord wood
on wagons and brought to Salem for burial in one common grave in this cemetery.
In addition to containing the bodies of many of Salems earliest Settlers, like James Turner, Hamilton McCollister and
Joshua Conkey, the cemetery contains documented burials of 101 Revolutionary War soldiers. Consequently, this
cemetery probably holds the greatest number of Revolutionary War soldiers in New York State. Overall, 1034 engraved
tombstones are found here. Among the stones can be found 32 early American carvings of the rounded angel head style
of Zerubbabel Collins of Shaftsbury, Vermont.
In 1810 A stone wall was erected to protect the cemetery from vandalism and the theft of gravestones. A cemetery
supervisor was hired to manage the use of the cemetery.
In 1933, outside the cemetery walls, the town and State of New York erected a monument in memory of the
Revolutionary War soldiers buried here.
The cemetery is located next to the Fair Grounds on Archibald Street in the village of Salem. The cemetery is currently
being mapped and the graves identified and indexed through a student Learn and Serve Grant, sponsored by Salem
Washington Academy. A list of those buried here is available from the town historian.
