GENERAL DESCRIPTION
75MCA Mass Computers are single loop,
microprocessor-based instruments for use with linear
type flowmeters. There are two Models dedicated to
liquid applications (75MCA....A and 75MCA....B)
and two Models dedicated to gas/steam applications
(75MCA....C and 75MCA....D). These
instruments provide a fluorescent display of rate (6
digits), total (8 digits), grand total (10 digits),
temperature, density, and pressure (gas and steam
only). Total, grand total, and rate can be
independently configured for different engineering
units, if desired. All three displays have a
programmable decimal point and an alphanumeric
label to represent engineering units.
The primary inputs for flow are pulse (0 to 5 kHz) or
analog (4 to 20 mA). All Models also have a
dedicated temperature-input channel that can be
configured for either 4 to 20 mA or 4-wire platinum
RTD. The units for gas/steam applications also have a
dedicated 4-to-20 mA pressure-input channel.
For Models 75MCA....A and 75MCA....B (liquid
applications), the user can program a density vs.
temperature curve, consisting of up to 20 points, into
memory. Liquid density is continuously calculated
from this curve based on the temperature input.
For Models 75MCA....A and 75MCA....B
(gas/steam applications), gas density is calculated
using the ideal gas law and inputs for temperature
and pressure. Steam density is calculated using preprogrammed tables stored in 75MCA memory, and
inputs of temperature and/or pressure.
In addition to mass units, data can be displayed in
volumetric flow units and standardized volumetric flow
units, if desired. Temperature, pressure, and density
can also be viewed on the display.

OUTPUTS
The 75MCA can provide the following outputs
simultaneously:
1. A 4 to 20 mA output that can be configured
proportional to displayed rate, density,
temperature, or pressure
2. A totalizer pulse output coincident with the
least significant whole digit on the totalizer
display
3. Five outputs with associated alarm set
points configurable to rate, high total,
density, temperature, or pressure. Three
NPN transistors and two relay outputs are
provided.
FRONT PANEL DISPLAY AND KEYPAD
75MCA Mass Computers can be configured and
operated entirely from the front panel without the
need for any external equipment. The front panel
consists of an alphanumeric display and a keypad as
shown in Figure 1 on Page 4.
The fluorescent display consists of sixteen character
positions. Each character is 5.1 mm (0.20 in) high
and comprises 14 segments. The display provides an
easy-to-read English language presentation of
measurement values and engineering units.
Total, grand total, rate, density, temperature,
pressure, and alarm-output set points can all be
displayed by the push of a key while in the Run
Mode. Secondary parameters can be scrolled on the
display using the key. Most parameter values will be
displayed along with programmable alphanumeric
labels that represent engineering units.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION(1)
75MCA....A (LIQUID APPLICATIONS)
This Model 75MCA accepts a pulse input (0 to 5 kHz)
from the flowmeter. The ratio of the input pulses per
unit of measure is defined by the programmed value
for the flowmeter K factor. The K factor can be
entered as a single value, or linearized over a range
of input frequencies. If linearized, up to 20 data pairs
(K, f), representing a K vs. f curve, can be entered
into memory. The K value is calculated every
35 milliseconds (ms) based on the current value of f.
The totalized value is updated every 140 ms (dt)
using the following formulas:
Uncompensated Total =
f
Total + C i ---- dt
K
Compensated (std. vol) Total =
f
Total + C i --------- ---- dt
std K
Compensated (mass) Total =
f
Total + C i ---- dt
K
where:
Uncompensated Rate =
f
C 4 T base ---K
Compensated (std. vol) Rate =
f
C 4 T base --------- --- std K
Compensated (mass) Rate =
f
C 4 T base ---K
The number of rate updates averaged together to
update the display and analog output is determined
by the value programmed for the trending time. The
time base (Tbase) can be programmed for seconds,
minutes, hours, or days. The C4 Multiplier can be
programmed to display rate in any desired units of
measure independent of the totalizers. The rate
display has a programmable decimal point.
Rate and totals can be displayed in standard
volumetric or mass engineering units. The 75MCA
accepts an RTD or 4 to 20 mA analog input for
temperature for this purpose. A density vs.
temperature curve, consisting of up to 20 data pairs
(, T), can be entered into memory. Density is
calculated approximately every 1/2 second based on
the current value for temperature, and will be used in
the flow rate and totalizer equations. To accurately
display rate and totals in volumetric engineering units,
the product density at standard conditions must also
be entered into memory.
The 75MCA alarms can be configured for flow rate,
temperature, and/or density measurements. Alarms
acknowledgement is by means of the RESET key
and/or a control input programmed for that purpose.
(1) Symbology used in equations is taken from R.W. Miller's Flow Measurement Engineering Handbook. This handbook is available from
Foxboro and is identified as Foxboro Part Number B0150YW.

75MCA....B (LIQUID APPLICATIONS)
This Model 75MCA accepts an analog (4 to 20 mA)
flow input. With the exception of characteristic
formulas, this version functions basically the same as
the pulse input version previously described. The
