JROTC CADET JOINS NATIONAL GUARD

Cadet Carlos Ramirez completed basic training for the National Guard during the summer. Ramirez
will be serving in the Guard on a 6 year contract. After graduation he hopes to join the Marine Corps or go to
college to study medicine and become a doctor in the US Navy. I decided to join the National Guard before
graduation to start earlier than other people to get a head start on my career. Ramirez added that he was the
only basic trainee going back to high school after completion of basic training. JROTC helped him with basic
commands and military bearing. Physical Training for them is very different they would have to do a lot of
push-ups in a certain amount of time and if they were not completed they would have do it again until they got
it right. Boot camp for Ramirez was very intense but was a great experience, he felt like he wouldnt pass it at
the beginning because he didnt meet the physical standards. He worked harder every day until he made sure
he would pass even though it was difficult. Ramirez was happy and said he would go back if he could and
experience it again.
At boot camp the first day was very emotional for people in my experience there I saw a lot of people
crying and fainting. Most of the drill sergeants would scream at them and get in there faces in every second of
they day. Even though they would yell at us over the time they were there they gained a bit of respect. The
training Ramirez said was very hard, he meet a lot of new people who he can call family and is still in touch
with right now, some of his friends/family are still in training. Ramirezs parents are very proud of him. At the
beginning there was a bit of doubt because he was taking a big step in life--his mom was very scared and
didnt want to sign the papers for him to go into the National Guard. His mom finally agreed and supported
him throughout the whole summer. His dad was very proud of his accomplishments and how far he had
gotten. I remember when I saw my dad again I was in my uniform and when he saw me he began to cry and
said he was very proud of me for making it this far. His whole family was very happy to have him back home
from boot camp. Being in JROTC gave him a higher position from E1 to E3. Ramirez encourages other
students to join the National Guard and have the same experience he did.

FORMER JROTC GROUP COMMANDER BECOMES A GEORGIA BULLDOG

Cadet Gloria Enya is a freshman and an international Business Major at the University Of Georgia. Gloria told us
a little bit about her experience, transition and how getting out of high school was hard and easy for her. The
transition from high school to college is one of the most fun filled and stressful transitions of life and no matter
how much advice you are given about it from family, friends, and colleagues, the best advice is that you tell
yourself. In college, the best advice I can give is "Let your actions portray your moral upbringing. Being at UGA
has been an eye opener. The parties, events, and freebies keep rolling each day but the best thing is to stay selfguarded as well as set limits and boundaries. Compared to high school, college is highly populated and diverse.
The classroom all range in different sizes, some with as low as 5 students while others have over 300 students.
The professors are sometimes funny and interesting while other professors are boring which will put you to sleep
pretty quickly. Typically, students are given a chance to make their schedule based on what days and hours work
best for them.
In college, students are held to a much higher standard when it comes to education. This means that you
are required to do all readings and lecture notes before the next class. Also, college is a technologically advanced
society meaning that all homework or class work assignment are posted and required to be submitted online.
Down to ROTC, college ROTC is very different from JROTC. It is more rigorous and high paced. ROTC requires
a whole lot of discipline and patience. Regular classes are held once a week alongside with leadership lab where
you learn your leadership skill as well as drill and other part of ROTC such as SABC (self-aid buddy care).
Physical fitness is often held two times a week at 0600 and attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend leads to
writing a memorandum which is clearly not a fun thing. For students interested in joining ROTC while entering
college, I suggest you start taking steps to become a leader. Also make sure to know drill because it will be very
important .To females out there, I suggest you look into joining ROTC because it's helps you as a person
physically and mentally. ROTC also gives you a wingman that will become one of your closest friends for the rest
of your life so I advise everyone interested in college ROTC to look into joining the program as well as apply for
a scholarship from the Air force.
Enya was one of our outstanding cadets she won an award for being an excellent student and knowing that
she has begun her life as an adult and continued being involved in ROTC makes us very proud. Enya wanted to
give all the cadets a little advice and said, To my upperclassmen class of 2017 & 2018!!! You are almost done.
Enjoy the time you have left in your high school memories. Look around and make long lasting and everlasting
friendships with the teaching staff and students. These friendships will always come in handy. While doing all
these wonderful things, don't forget to continue sending out those college applications. If your GPA is not where
you want it to be, work hard and get it up there. Do not limit yourself to the number of colleges you apply to.
Apply to as many schools as possible. Personally I applied to 13 total schools which were in-state and out of state
schools. Luckily I got into 11 of the schools I applied for. Make sure to stay on top of your application and
monitor them closely. Lastly, I strongly persuade each and every one of you to apply for scholarships no matter
the amount because they come as a great help for tuition. After all said, I wish each and every one of you a
wonderful school year and look forward to reading each and every success story. GO VIKINGS!!!!

CADET LEADERSHIP COURSE

Preparation for cadet leadership course at Mercer University started with weeks of drill practice. We
often had classroom discussions with Cadet Washington who had already attended summer camp the
previous year and would be returning as a cadre member. Our discussions with her often included having a
positive attitude, room preparation, academics, and expectations. In terms of physical fitness preparation,
we mainly focused on completing the mile run within the required time. The required times were 10
minutes for males and 11 minutes for females. None of our cadets were sent home for not completing the
mile run in the time given. Cadets had an academics class every day to learn small things that you wouldnt
pay much attention to but had a lot of meaning to it. Drill was very hard on every cadet we had weeks of
practice to try to get every cadet prepared so no one would fail the test they had to take. Summer camps
main focus was to teach cadets discipline and order.
Summer camp was very hard on all of us. We left Lakeside at 7:30 in the morning on June 13. We
checked in at Mercer University around noon. The first day arriving there, cadets were mainly focused on
settling in and meeting the instructors and cadet leadership core. Cadets were sent into academic for most
of the day and told what was expected from them all week.
Throughout the week cadets had drill, academics, pt., study time and room inspection those were
the main activities throughout the day. Throughout the week we meet a lot of different people and made a
lot of new friends from different high schools. Summer camp is a great experience! Although they are very
strict in the end its all about being a great team. The last few days werent very hard we played a lot of
games in pt. The cadets cheered for other teams, had fun talking to each other, getting to know one another,
and share our experiences. I would say summer camp is a place worth going but it does take a lot of work
and effort to get through it. Our unit also won the unit of excellence award, which had never been won in
our school it, was great and very emotional for all of us.
