The Sale of a Lifetime

Since 1981, Carol Coe-Vokes has
been a major player in the Cadillac
real estate market. With her outgoing
personality and unique style, she
owns any room she enters.
For Carol, sales was a natural
choice, not just because shes
perfectly suited for the job, but also
because shes a Cadillac legacy.
My parents owned Admirals Pet
Shop in Cadillac, said Carol. So it
was pretty natural for me to go into
sales.
Carol founded Advance Realty
in 1981 in the midst of a booming
Cadillac housing market, and it
almost immediately became a family
effort.
My husband, my brother, and
one of my daughters were licensed
agents during that period, she said.
Sales were booming.
Nearly 37 years later, Carols sales are still booming,
even in a sluggish economy.
It takes a special person to succeed in sales, she
said. We have a built-in drive for success and for life
itself. It also takes perseverance and a dedicated work
ethic to survive down timesespecially the last three
years.
Despite continued success, however, Carol has
become a one woman show and points to her guiding
principles and unique skill set as part of the recipe
for success.
I think Ive been so successful because my
personal marketing and advertising skills set me
apart from others, she said. I also pride myself on

my professionalism, honesty and integrity. Ive been

in sales for 37 years with continued referrals which
speaks to my knowledge and integrity.
While loved by her customers, Carol has also been
honored by her colleagues.
Carol began the Womens Council of Realtors
Cadillac Chapter and was President for the first two
years; also in 1987 Carol was named Realtor of the
Year by her local Board of Realtors which was truly
special.
Carol can be found in her office at Park Place
Centre on Mitchell Street in downtown Cadillac,
available by phone at (231) 775-1368, and you can
view her listings online at www.advancerealty.com.

Caring Through Connections

The idea for Belle Oakes Assisted
Living Center was simple for Joel
and Esther Nederhood; they wanted
to create an environment where
individuals could live out the best
years of their lives, in a safe, secure,
Christian environment. Belle Oakes
opened in October of 2003 with their
philosophy of patient centered care
rooted in their deep faith. Today, they
have grown into three additional
thriving businesses, which fill
previously unmet needs in our
community.
After the creation of Belle Oakes,
they discovered a need for a personal
care agency that would be affordable
and committed to our residents
24/7, thus the creation of Blue Lagoon
Therapy & Services. But it didnt stop there. After realizing
there was also a need for a reliable, accessible and safe nonemergency medical transportation company, not only for her
clients, but also those all over Michigan, they created Lake to
Lake Transportation in 2010.
Shortly after, in 2011, Joel and Esther realized that, again,
not only do her residents need to have a place to get personal,
loving, rehabilitation services, but so do those within the
community. Thus, Bella Rose Rehabilitation & Aquatic Center
was created to provide advanced outpatient rehabilitation
services for patients not fitting the traditional therapy model.
These foundations are what create this amazing multilayered organization that serves the needs of all our clients
and residents in rural Northern Michigan.
All of the companies have grown and continue to grow.
Belle Oakes had opened an additional wing in November of
2012, increasing the capacity by 25% and having a constant
waiting list. Blue Lagoon has also grown substantially in
their Restorative Program by lowering resident falls from

231-779-4671

about 30 falls in January of 2014 down

to 2 in December 2015 alone. Lake to
Lake has also expanded and has had
new contracts in 2016 to help expand
farther in Michigan. Bella Rose has
continued to grow in clientele every
year. Between all 4 companies, Joel
and Esther have over 140 employees.
By promoting from within, key
leadership positions are filled by those
that are passionate in following the
E.S.T.H.E.R. Care Model. This model
is the key to the Nederhoods success;
Enthusiastic, Spiritual, Trusting,
Healthy, Emotional and Respectful
Care, as well as, their mission
statement: Provide exceptional care
for all individuals we serve and employ
in a loving, caring, family environment.
By continuing to increase her knowledge of care to the
elderly and disabled in our area, Esther has just recently,
in 2016, passed her Gerontology exam and is now one of the
few in the nation that is certified in Gerontology. She also
is a Certified Assisted Living RN, Certified Assisted Living
Director and a Dementia Care Practitioner. She has received
the American Assisted Living Nurse Association Ethel Mitty
Scholarship in 2013, validating her mission of excellence in
all of her companies. Every single staff member becomes
a Dementia Care Specialist within their first 90 days of
employment, taught by Esther, to ensure their knowledge is
above standard when assisting the residents or anyone in the
community.
It is clear that the Nederhoods have adapted to the rapid
changes and channeled their efforts into something as
successful as it was intended.
Belle Oakes, Blue Lagoon and Lake to Lake are located at
2353 South LaChance Road and Bella Rose is located at 1900
South LaChance Road, both in Lake City, Michigan.

Quality Hometown Care

In 1882, Charles Bostick opened his
doors to the residents of Manton, then
the County Seat of Wexford County, and
began a tradition thats spanned more
than 140 years.
Five generations later, Bosticks Drug
Store still stands and operates in much
the same way it did in 1882: by keeping
Manton healthy.
While the name and the business
remain the same, ownership has changed
families. Mike Moffit purchased the
business from the Bostick family in 2011
and continues to provide convenient
pharmacy services to local patients.
No one in the Bostick family was
interested in the pharmacy profession,
said Moffit. I saw a good opportunity
for success in retail pharmacy, so I
made the move to purchase it.
Today, Moffit is the sole proprietor
and runs the business by himself in
much the same way it has always been run.
I try to give the utmost care and attention to every
patient that walks through my front door, said Moffit.
We offer free delivery and after hours service as
well.
Whatever he is doing is working. Bosticks Drug
Store continues to grow and has become an integral
part of Downtown Manton businesses and the
community. Moffit credits the increase to the nature
of a local pharmacy.
Owning a small, family-run business allows me to
offer that small town service to do the little things

that only a community-based pharmacy like this

can do, he said. We just give really good customer
service.
Being the little guy is not without its challenges,
however. With mail order pharmacies, insurance
reimbursement issues and the notion that the big box
stores are cheaper than local stores; its often difficult
to keep customers coming through the doors.
Bosticks Drug Store is located at 117 West Main
Street in Manton and can be reached at (231) 824-6465.

Lead By Ceativity
Surround yourself with the
things you love.
That is the principle that guides
manager Gregg Carner and the
staff of Brinks Art and Frame
Shop, which has been a mainstay
of the Cadillac community for
more than 35 years.
Wilhelmina and Bert Brinks
opened the shop in 1979.
Wilhelmina was a photographer
who loved Cadillac and the
surrounding areas.
In 1984,
Brinks moved to the Elks Building
on Mitchell Street in downtown
Cadillac.
In 2000 Gregg and Kriss Carner
bought Brinks. Eight years ago,
Brinks moved to its existing
location in the former Carlsons
Jewelers building at 112 S.
Mitchell St.
His shop offers custom picture
framing and art supplies and features a staff of
interior designers, a retired art teacher and other
team players. Over the years, the Carners have
modernized equipment such as a computerized mat
cutter and pneumatic frame joiner, which means
when the frame is complete, it is perfect.
Craftsmanship is key to Gregg Carner. He
believes in taking the time to get to know and help

customers and taking part in their journeys.

The craftsman in me strives for 100%, he says.
Carner, who was a printer in his youth and
residential and commercial painter, has always
loved color. He can guide customers to blend art,
mat and frame for that designed for you feel.

A Tradition Of Caring
For more than 40 years, Keith
Burkholder has served families
in McBain and the surrounding
communities throughout the difficult
process of saying goodbye to a loved
one. Keith has been a funeral director
in the area since 1979. In 2013, he
opened a new funeral home on Pine
Street.
Being from the Lake City area,
Keith and his wife, Norma, longed to
return home and found the small town
atmosphere of the McBain community
appealing. They relocated, started
a funeral home and have been in
business ever since.
Today, their personal values of
honesty and integrity guide their business, resulting
in a company that is identified by compassion and
empathy.
Were proud of how we are able to meet the
customers various needs, said Keith. We arent
afraid to adapt to the changing attitudes and new
trends in funeral practices.
The Burkholders focus on accommodating their
clients, and they will hold services at any time of
day, on any day of the week. They understand how
hard it can be for people to handle the high cost of
todays economic conditions, so they choose not
to charge a service fee for holiday, Sunday or even
nighttime services.
Were available 24-7 anywhere, anytime, said
Keith Burkholder. We answer our own phones as

Connecting people, Enhancing lives

Trusted. Local. Connected.
For more than 140 years, the Cadillac News
has been delivering news to the residents of the
Cadillac area.
The history of the publication is, in many ways,
the history of Cadillac itself.
Like the original name of the city, the paper
was known as The Clam Lake News and began
with the encouragement of C.L. Frazier by his
good friend, George A. Mitchell, the founder of
the Village of Clam Lake. In 1877, the village
was incorporated as a city and given the name
Cadillac. Logically, the name of the paper
changed as well and the Cadillac News
was born. With a continuous history of
operation, most by the Huckle family, a
number of early editions of the Clam
Lake News and nearly every edition of
the Cadillac News have been preserved
by the Huckle family in the special
archives room at the Cadillac News.
The ownership history of the Cadillac
News was somewhat checkered in its
early years with various individuals
and interests owning and operating the
business. Things stabilized for the paper
in 1926 when T.O. Huckle purchased
controlling interest and the Huckle family
has remained the sole owners of the
publication and all its entities since that
time.
Today, the paper is owned and operated
by Chris Huckle and his wife, Katy, who not only own
the paper, but the historic building that it occupies. The
couple purchased controlling interest of the paper in 2003
when Chris father, Tom Huckle, retired as editor. Today,
Chris serves as publisher of the paper and Katy works in

the banking industry.

For the Huckle family, running
a newspaper
is
a
tremendous
responsibility. Not just because of the
work that goes into producing what is
essentially a brand new product six
days per week, but because of the role a
newspaper plays in any community.
Our purpose, said Chris Huckle, is
to provide information that enhances
the businesses, the communities, and
the lives of the people we serve.
As the sole owners of the paper, the
Huckle family is unique. In fact, out of
51 daily newspapers in the state of Michigan,
The Cadillac News is one of only six papers that continue
to be locally owned and operated.
The Cadillac News is located at 130 North Mitchell
Street in Downtown Cadillac. You can find the Cadillac
News online at www.cadillacnews.com.

A long-standing tradition.
Since 1872, the Cadillac News has been the thread that knits our
communities together. Dedicated reporters, who live in the area, provide
first-hand accounts of the important issues that affect your lives.
If its important to the community, youll find it in the Cadillac News.
Well continue to deliver the most in-depth coverage of local government,
environmental issues, schools, education and the lives of local people.

Big-Time Products,
Small Town Service
Like many small business owners, Doug
Sengelaub grew up in a family business learning
the ropes and developing his own ideas.
In 1996, he took those ideas and founded DouGlass:
a full service glass business in Cadillac.
After working in my parents glass business,
I wanted to branch out. I wanted to try things a
different way and in a different area, said Doug
Sengelaub. I saw a need in the Cadillac area for a
full service glass shop.
With the help and support of his wife, Melinda,
Doug Sengelaub moved into the former Garn Glass
building. DouGlass was born.
Throughout the years, Doug Sengelaub has
grown the business significantly. First by adding
autoglass in 1998 and insulated glass production
the next year.
We do all kind of glass here, said Doug. In
1999 we built a new facility to produce high quality,
insulated glass panels right here in Cadillac.
But despite having the ability to do big glass jobs,
DouGlass keeps its focus on the individual customer.
I treat my customers the way I would like to be
treated, he said. It doesnt matter how small the job
or the problem is, well try to fix it.
With a can-do attitude and a talented team around
him, Doug Sengelaub is poised to keep growing
for years to come. But its clear how he feels about
becoming too big or selling out to a big corporation.
I will never allow a big corporation in here, he
said. Its a challenge to keep ahead of them, and

theyre moving into the industry, but were a small,

family business and we plan to stay that way.
Today, Doug Sengelaub has a little help staying on
top of things. Along with his wife, Doug Sengelaub
credits the hard work of Chad Carmichael, Carrie
Brookhart and Chris Coffman in making the business
as successful today as it was during the economic
boom of the late 90s.
My employees are like family, and I try to treat
them that way, he said.

in Cadillac and can be found online at www.

Helping kids, families in crisis

Since 1968, Eagle Village in Hersey has offered guidance

and care to at-risk youth and families in crisis.
Eagle Village initially was a youth home for boys.
Founders Kermit and Jean Hainley wanted to reach
young men in the juvenile justice system and prevent
them from a future full of long-term incarceration.
The Hainleys gave the boys a loving home, tasks, fun
adventures and a spiritual foundation. Those experiences
and that consistency laid the groundwork for what Eagle
Village is today.
Over time, Eagle Village opened its doors to female
youths needing care and began offering foster care and
adoption services. The programs grew as the courts and
human service agencies learned about what services this
Osceola County-based program offered.
Eagle Village remains attentive to the needs of families
in our communities. In 2011, it began offering intervention
services. Also, parents were able to directly refer their
child to an intervention program or summer camp. This
change opened doors for families who previously may

have felt they had no way to help their child.

Intervention services now include summer camps,
Youth Challenge weekends, Family Challenge weekends
and a short-term intervention program called Changing
Lanes.
Family weekends allow parents and youth to attend
together, learning new ways to improve their family
dynamic. They are given opportunities to communicate
in a safe, neutral environment.
The ideal situation would be to have a youth attend
either a challenge weekend or summer camp, then attend
a family weekend and another camp or weekend a few
months later to reinforce what they have learned and
have been putting into practice at home.
Eagle Village also offers team-building and prevention
programs for schools, churches, corporations and
organizations. Its retreat staff will collaborate with with
each to provide a personalized, effective experience.
Eagle Village is located at 4507 170th Ave., Hersey. For

Five Generations

Fa m i ly Ow n e d & Op e rate d
Si n c e 1920

In todays fast paced world of supermarkets and big

box stores, the small town grocer has become a rare
entity. But one northern Michigan family has been
providing good food from good people for nearly 100
years.
The story begins with a horse and carriage in
Moddersville. Chris and Susie Ebels sold groceries
to the residents of Falmouth and saw an opportunity
for growth. In 1920 Chris moved his operations to
Falmouth. Five generations later, the Ebels family is
still selling groceries to the residents of Falmouth.
The horse has since passed and the cart repurposed,
but the same principles that brought success to
Chris and Susie are now helping their progeny take
the family business into the next generation.
Our business wouldnt be here without Gods
blessing. Whatever we do is to His glory, said Bob
Ebels, who handles the stores finances as its CFO.
Although we have expanded beyond Falmouth, we
still want to serve people well through the products
and services we offer.
When walking into Ebels store, you get that nostalgic
feeling and are reminded of that small town store that had
everything and everyone there knew each other.
People like the personal relationships we have here,
said Bob. Although were sort of a destination now, people
feel welcomed here. Like theyve always been a customer of
Ebels.
For Mark and Dawn, there was no question whether
they would be in the family business. When Marks father
passed away unexpectedly at age 50, Mark, along with
Dawn, and his siblings were given the responsibility of
the business. While Mark and Dawn concentrated on the
grocery and meat aspect of the business, some of Marks
siblings focused on the hardware and his Mom focused on
the clothing. With young families, the Ebels children were
literally raised in the store and continue to be involved
today.

12

Its fun to be part of something that covers so many

generations, said Dawn. To see how it has evolved over
time is really something.
And evolved it has. Ebels is no longer just a grocery
store but also a hardware store, a clothing store, a catering
service and now a famous producer of processed and
smoked meat products.
People cant get enough Little Town products, said
Dawn. We sell it in a lot of different locations.
But with so many irons in the fire, it can be difficult to
find time to spend with family that doesnt involve work.
Every one of the family members puts in a lot of hours,
said Dawn. Finding a balance between work and home is
challenging. But God is working that out, too. We trust God
to lead us through and draw us closer to him.
In the event that you havent seen their local television
commercial, Ebels is located in beautiful downtown
Falmouth and online at www.ebelsgeneralstore.com.

More than a convenience store

For the Ellens family, owning a business
that serves the community is nothing new.
Chuck Ellens has been pleasing palates
since 1976 as the former owner of the House
of Flavors, and has been co-owner of Ellens
Corners in Mesick since 1999 with his late
wife, Nancy; daughter-in-law, Kim and his
late son, Jeff Ellens.
In 1992, the family purchased a plot of land
on the corner of M-37 and M-115 in Mesick
and began to dream.
The school had property available, so we
purchased it not knowing what exactly we
would do with it. We later decided on the
idea of a convenience store and sort of went
from there, said Kim Ellens, who took over
as president after her husband, Jeff, was
killed in a snowmobile accident in early 2013.
By many accounts, Jeff was Ellens Corners. Having
built a successful food service business in addition to
running a convenience store and gas station, Jeff left
some big shoes for Kim and Chuck to ll in the family,
the business and the community.
Kim had to take over unexpectedly during a difcult
time and had to learn the business the way Jeff did it. In
addition to the typical challenges of running a business,
Kim also had to nd a way to take over Jeff s famous
barbecue ribs.
The ribs were Jeff s baby and became very popular
with our customers. We knew we had to keep them
goingits just one way we try to keep his spirit alive in
this place, said Kim, who is grooming a new generation
of Ellens to participate in the family business.
The whole family is now involved, said Chuck. Kim
has three kids, Jake, Jordin and Brooke. They are now
working at the store, and is passing on our values and
showing them how to run the business.

We try to hire local people and really treat them as

part of the family, said Chuck. We also try to stay
active in the community by helping the school system
and the sports community.
Ellens Corners is not just a gas station; it also features
a full-service deli with pizza, subs, breakfast meals, and,
of course, Jeff s famous ribs on Fridays.
The Ellens pride themselves on their outstanding
customer service and always strive to provide a great
product and great food to their customers: a good mix of
locals and folks just passing through.
The Blessing of the Jeeps is a huge event for us,
said Chuck, referring to the Jeep Blessing celebration
the Ellens host on their property every springs. We also
do a lot of business during the Mushroom Festival,
he said. The Mushroom Festival, annually held over
Mothers Day weekend, is sponsored by the Lions Club,
and is a big event for the businesses in Mesick.

A McBain tradition

For more than 60 years, Ellens Equipment in

McBain has been a family-owned and operated
business, and they have no intention of stepping
aside anytime soon.
In 1954, June Ellens established his business after
seeing a need for agricultural support in a growing
farming area. Today, Ellens sells agricultural and
construction equipment, as well features as parts and
service.
Ellens Equipment started as a small family business
and that family plans to continue that tradition in
the years to come. A family-run business creates a
bond of trust and loyalty; customers know they have a
dependable and familiar working for them, according
to the family.
Today, Don and Linda Ellens Junes son and
daughter-in-law own and operate the business. Their
son, Luke, works for the company and looks forward to
owning it one day.
The family continues to push for progress and to
meet the ever-changing needs of the agricultural and
construction industries.
The business most recent accomplishment was the
construction and opening of its new facility in McBain.
The Ellens have tripled the size of their service

department and significantly increased its parts and

sales areas to better serve customers throughout
Michigan.
The strength of Ellens Equipment is dependent
on the strong team that starts with the department
managers but includes all the employees, according to
the family. Each person at Ellens Equipment plays a
very important role and we wouldnt be where we are
today without every person on the team.
Ellens Equipment, Inc., is located at 5297 W. Stoney
Corners Road in McBain. For more information, call

Excel puts drivers to the test

Excel Driver Testing and Training strives to make

the testing process for those seeking drivers licenses
as positive an experience as possible.
Doug Mulder has been providing auto and
motorcycle license exams for the State of Michigan
for over 15 years. Owners Doug and Lynn Mulder took
over the entire road test business from Cadillac Truck
Service about a year ago so Cadillac Truck could focus
on other areas of their business.
Excel now handles the scheduling and reporting of
exams. It uses the test course at Cadillac Truck Service.
The driving test portion takes place throughout
Cadillac and includes a vehicle inspection, skills test,
city driving and freeway driving as mandated by the
State of Michigan.
The Mulders realize that getting a drivers license
is a big event in a teens life, so its their goal to put
nervous applicants at ease and make it a pleasant
experience. They also administer tests to applicants
over 18 years old and to those wanting to get their
motorcycle endorsement.

Excel has experienced a large increase in business in

the last year. Forty tests a month had been the average;
its increased to 70 to 80 tests monthly, according to the
Mulders. They attribute this boost to lower gas prices
and repeat clients bringing their other children in for
testing.
While theyre happy for this success, becoming so
busy has made it difficult for Excel to meet its goal
of a maximum two-week wait for an appointment.
Doug works full time in addition to testing auto and
motorcycle license applicants. But a second examiner
has completed training, allowing the business to offer
more test times.
To help clients find Excel, it soon will have a
driveway off 39 Road and a larger sign.
In addition to Doug Mulder, the Excel team consists
of Lynn Mulder and Jennie Reitz, scheduling and
office tasks; and Dale Westdorp, auto examiner.

Where Comfort is

How do you get to be a mattress lady? Well,
for Kathi Blevins and her daughter Kelsey
McGregor, its been a long road. Kathi found
herself the sole provider for herself and four

She was so good at understanding how to fit
people to the right mattress, and developed
such a reputation, that a little over 15 years
ago, she ended up buying the furniture store
when the opportunity arose.
About three years ago, her daughter
Kelsey began working full time at Fabulous

family member at the store. Kyle, Katelynn.
Kaleb and Kelsey have all made the business grow,
says Kathi.
They really had no choice! I needed the help
and they needed to learn that you have to work to
make it in this world, she said. They are honest
and learned to treat people right. We have been
blessed to spend that time together. They make me
so proud!
Besides mattresses they have a full line of
furniture for the home, cabin and outdoors. Kelsey
says, We have the lowest prices in Michigan.

Hard Work, Honesty & Trust

A true American Dream success story, the Galvanek

family had always liked the idea of creating an auto
auction business close to home. In 1976, that dream
became a reality and they opened Galvaneks Auto
RVs & Auto Auction. Ed and Alice Galvanek founded
the company, along with their two sons Dennis and
Jackthe workhorses of the family. Alice was known
as the glue that held the business together. Dennis had
three sons: Edward, Christopher and Charles.
Today, the company is run by Charles and Edward,
Dennis youngest and oldest sons. Thanks to a strong
economy, they saw the companys biggest period
of growth between 1995 and 2006, when all three of
Dennis sons were working. And they continue to
grow and succeed thanks to their hardworking and
dedicated employees.
Interestingly, Edward and Charles didnt always
intend to be a part of the family business. But once
they saw the opportunity to help the business grow
and succeed, they couldnt help but throw their hats

into the family business ring.

The Galvaneks know that running a family-owned
business has its ups and downs. Its great to live close
to work. Its beneficial to be able to work with a group
of people that you care about, and know you can trust.
And even though its tough to get along sometimes
without a little bloodshed, its invaluable to know that
your co-workers are truly invested in the business.
Hard work, honesty and trust are the principles that
guide the Galvanek family, and its those values that
have made their company so successful. Hard work,
honesty and trust are what youll get if you head
just nine miles west of Cadillac on M-55 to look at a

Performing at a Higher Level

The Highpoint story began in 1986
when Harvey and Harold Koning saw an
opportunity in an existing car dealership
in Cadillac.
In 1991, Jerry Koop Sr. became a partner
and operator and began to grow the business.
Trouble surfaced in early 1993, when
the office manager was found guilty of
embezzlement and the business was not
able to show a profit due to the large amount
of cash siphoned from the business. But
Koop cleaned up the mess and took the
dealership back to the black.
The 90s were good years, said Jerry
Koop Jr. who is now the general manager
of Highpoint. From 1993 to 1999 we grew
in volume and gross sales.
In 2000, structural changes within
General Motors offered Highpoint another
challenge.
GM decided to quit making Oldsmobile and
Pontiac, said Koop. Those were our two leading
volume vehicles.
The trouble continued when GM went bankrupt and
Highpoint lost its Cadillac Dealership.
We fought the Cadillac decision and eventually
won, but we were without [the brand] for a full year,
said Koop.
For the Koops, customer loyalty has helped them
through some difficult years, and a strong set of
talented employees keep them coming back.
We feel like we have the best employees around
and were proud of each and every one of them, said
Koop. It would be impossible to run this business

without them. We try to treat them like family, but we

also insist that they treat our customers that way as
well.
Treating the customer well is a guiding principle for
the Koops and stems from a well-known approach to life.
We try to run our business by the Golden Rule.
Profits are necessary, but are not the only driving
force, said Koop. To treat the customer as a friend
and truly value that relationship is our ultimate goal
and our true purpose.
Highpoint Auto is located at 7555 South US 131
in Cadillac. They can be reached online at www.

We Perform at a Higher Level... Yours.
Gustave Flaubert once said, Success is a result, not a goal.
There are always a few who are inspired to work a little harder
and climb a little higher.
So where can you find this same commitment to excellence in an
automobile dealership? At Highpoint. Were a unique dealership
with an exceptional way of doing business.
At Highpoint, success will never be an indication of completion,
but a signal to begin again. Thats why we are constantly
revitalizing our facilities, our services and our premiere selection
of fine automobiles. Perhaps thats why so many of this areas
successful individuals will make Highpoint their dealership.
Visit us, we perform at the highest level . . . yours.

Creating family fun

Dave and Laurie Jensen had purchased
property in the Cadillac area.
Dave Jensen was in the RV business. On
weekends, theyd travel from downstate
Holly to Cadillac and planned on retiring
here.
Instead, they moved here full time and
opened Jensens RV Center of Cadillac
in 2003.
Their mission is to provide affordable
RVs with integrity and honesty to
families, to support family fun and to
create bonds with their customers.
We treat people like we want to be
treated, Laurie Jensen says. Were in
the business of fun! It should be a fun
experience.
Business has been strong since 2015,
but the recession created challenges for
the Jensens. The key to survival was knowing when
to ask for help, she recalls.
They sought out experts for advice. They worked
for two years with business consultants from
the Michigan Small Business and Technology
Development Center.
Today, the market is up and RVs are in demand,
Laurie Jensen says. Their biggest challenge now
is offering competitive pricing and meeting their
customers needs.
Dave Jensen oversees operations and offers
expert diagnostics and repair. Laurie Jensen is in

charge of finances, marketing and sales. Jill Smith

is the parts and service manager. Jamie Gordon is
an assistant and fun specialist. Matt House and
Jeff Stevens are RV service technicians.
We opened this business with a dream, on a
wing and a prayer, Laurie Jensen says. God has
blessed us in so many ways. We are proud to be here
serving the community.
Jensens RV Center of Cadillac is located at 7145

A powerful family stands the test of time.

Larry Fleis was serving the community as a police
officer with the Traverse City Police Department when
he saw an opportunity and had an ideahe would open
an outdoor power store to supplement his income.
With his wife, Marilyn, on board, Larry opened Lark
Lawn and Garden in Traverse City in 1974. For nearly
20 years, Larry continued to split his time between the
store and the police force. In 1997, he
retired and moved the store from
its original location, one mile east
to the corner of Norton Road and
M-37 to increase visibility.
This was a big move for us,
said Ben Fleis, Larry and Marilyns
son, who is now the manager of the
Cadillac Store. It allowed us to put
in larger buildings and with the
increased traffic, our sales increased
substantially.
But the expansions didnt end
there. In 2004, the family saw a need
for an outdoor power equipment dealer in the Cadillac
area. After 30 years in business, Lark Lawn and Garden
began to service two local communities.
We were really welcomed into the community,
said Ben. This year we celebrate 12 years serving the
Cadillac area.
With seven family members currently assisting in the
daily operations of the business, Lark Lawn and Garden
is truly a family affair.
The benefit is that everyone here truly cares about
quality customer service, said Ben. Even our staff
members that are not technically part of the family are
treated as family. We offer holiday pay, health insurance
and we even provide a paid day off for your birthday.
With sister Suzique Couture serving as the Traverse
City Store Manager, sister Annette Houghton is Office

Manager and cousin Monique Nickerson

handles all the parts; Ben is surrounded
by family Larrys brother, Marc Fleis, has
been with the company since 1981 and has
been a major element in the companys
success over the years. Sadly in December
2014 Larry passed away. Larry is greatly missed by all
of us, we strive to honor him by continuing to run the
store as Larry did said Suzique.
To that end, the family continually seeks to improve
all aspects of the company so that it will benefit the
customers, the employees and the company itself.
With more than 10 brands of equipment, a huge parts
inventory and the top two brands of chainsaws in the
world, Stihl and Husqvarna, Lark Lawn and Garden is
considered a one stop shop for outdoor power equipment.
We are the super store of lawn equipment, said Ben.
But we still provide that same friendly, personalized
service that we always have.
Lark Lawn and Garden is located Downtown Cadillac
on Mitchell Street across from the Shell gas station. You

Shopping Fun Waits

A unique shopping experience can be found in
the heart of Manton.
Since opening in 2012, Latitude 44 has transformed
from one boutique into five shops and a clothing
line.
Latitude 44 is run by the husband-and-wife team
of Cory and Aimee Danford. In the midst of a tough
economy, Cory built a boutique for Aimee, striving
to provide a low overhead and for the customers, a
low-cost, alternative shopping experience.
The shop took off, and Latitude 44 now consists
of five small shops; an old fashioned soda bar with
handmade italian sodas, floats and specialty drinks;
full coffee bar featuring Ferris Premium Coffee; ice
cream featuring Sleeping Bear Supreme brand ice
cream; and the Danfords trademarked Latitude
44 clothing line. Latitude 44 offers unique, locally
made items, seating areas and special events.
The couples mission is to give their customers a
fun shopping experience.
We focus on quality, local-made products and a
fun/relaxing environment, Cory Danford says.
Cory and Aimee are at the shops almost every day.
We spend a lot of time here because we love it,
too, and enjoy our time at the shops, he says.
One benefit of creating a family-owned-andoperated business is being able to look back and
reflect on how the family created something from
nothing, Cory says.
We still look at old pictures and are amazed at
what we have built in four years, he adds.

The couple is looking forward to the continued

growth of their shops and to providing new and fun
experiences for their customers, he says.
We have seen growth every single season we are
open and we are always trying to add new things for
people to do, Cory notes.
Latitude 44 is located just off Old U.S. 131 at 308
Wall St. in Manton. Contact the shops at 231-920-1253.

A Little Clarity Means Good Business

Mike Long founded Longs Hearing
Care in 1986 with one simple goal in
mindto make hearing accessible and
affordable to everyone in a comfortable
family environment. We dont
want anyone feeling intimidated by a
corporate feeling, said Mike. We want
our customers to feel at ease, so we take
a sort of family approach. We smile,
joke and have fun with our patients. We
truly love what we do.
After 30 years in business, the
approach seems to be working.
By offering free hearing screenings
and free cleaning and service for life,
Longs has built a loyal customer base.
Longs
offers
industry-leading
accessibility with down and zero
percent financing, making hearing
accessible to everyone.
I have every intention to be the best
at what I do by offering the best products
in the industry at better prices than
anyone else can offer, said Mike, who
points to a partnership with Starkey Hearing Aids.
We are exclusively Starkey and belong to an alliance
of hearing professionals so we can offer great quality
hearing aids at a competitive price.
Starkey is number one in the world, he said.
They are made in the USA and their technology leads
the industry.
But despite offering a better product and lower
prices, Mike admits that the competition can be tough.
With other hearing centers popping up here and there,

One of the best decisions that I have made in a long
time was when I decided to open the door at Longs
Hearing Care in Cadillac Michigan. I went in for
a hearing test. I was treated with respect from the
second that walked in the door. Melissa met me at
the front counter and took care of my needs in a very
professional manner. I was tested and diagnosed for
hearing aids. I was then fitted and when I returned
back in 3 days my hearing life was changed. I now
dont have to ask people to repeat what they said or
have to guess an answer to a question that I really didnt even hear. Today I hear
everything loud and clear. Life has completely changed for me. Thank you to Melissa
and Mike at Longs Hearing Care!!

styles have given Maggies a few makeovers throughout
the years, but for owners Margaret (Maggie) and Brian
Jones, the original look was the best look, so after they
purchased the building and Glenns Bar that occupied
it in 1983, they set out on a complete renovation and
Maggies Tavern was born.
We used to travel to a place in Traverse City that
had a casual atmospherethere were always families
there enjoying themselves, said Maggie. We thought
Cadillac could use a place like that.
Mission accomplished. Today Maggies is a favorite
among families and casual diners alike each asking
the same question and each assuming the same wrong
answer: Thats Maggie on the sign out front, right?
Nope.
The picture is actually Maggies grandmother, Mamie.
She would be amused that we used her picture, said
Maggie. We wanted to maintain the Victorian feel of the
building and that picture worked well.
Maggies grandfather, co-owner of three lumberyards
in Wisconsin, visited Pleasant Lake in the early days

and fell in love with the area.

Without telling Mamie, he
literally bought the farm and
the story of Maggies in Cadillac
was set in motion.
Today, Maggies is serving its
third generation of customers.
Throughout that time, a few
things have remained constant:
Excellent food, a relaxed family
atmosphere and Phyllis Satterlee.
Phyllis is our shining star, said Maggie. She started
working with us in high school at another business
we owned and signed on right away when we opened
Maggies.
But Phyllis isnt the only long-term employee.
We have several other staff members that have
worked for us for more than 25 years, she said. I like
having a staff that depends on each other and works
together to create the kind of atmosphere we have here.
This proves one thing for sure. Something is working.
Perhaps its the relaxed environment or perhaps its the
guiding principles that Maggie has followed.
I believe anything worth doing is worth doing right,
she said. I also follow the Golden Rule that says, you
should do unto others as you would have them do unto
you. Lastly, I believe that you should make new friends
but keep the old because one is silver and the other gold.
The road taken has not always been smooth, however.
With such changes as the bypass of 131 around Cadillac,
and changes in the economy that have resulted in less
travelers to the area, Maggies has had slow times. But
in the end, it was the loyal locals and a good team that
helped get the business through those tough times and
will continue to do so in the future.
Maggies is open Monday - Saturday from 11AM, Closed
Sunday and all major holidays. Were located on the corner
of North and Mitchell Streets in downtown Cadillac.

Neighbors helping neighbors

In small towns like ours, youre
more likely to find neighbors looking
out for neighbors.
Dr. Clayton Gilde wanted to create
a business that would help his
neighbors.
People were driving long
distances to get their prescriptions
filled, said Clayton. There were
several instances where people
would tell me that they had to take
a half day off work just to go to the
doctor and get their prescriptions
filled.
With few options for healthcare in
town and a pharmacy that had stopped serving
the area, residents of McBain, Lake City and
surrounding areas were in a bind.
In October 2013, McBain Family Pharmacy
opened its doors. Lake City Family Pharmacy
opened in 2015.
Opening a business was somewhat of a
natural thing for Clayton and his wife, Dr. Lacey
Gilde, who both were very familiar with family
businesses.
We were both raised in family businesses,
he said. We always valued the strong customer
service they could provide, whether it be in
farming or masonry work.
For Clayton, his pharmacies are a little different
than most in that everything is handled locally
and everyone is willing to lend a hand. These are
some of the benefits of running a family business.
Clayton also prides himself on following one

simple business rule: Everyone who

walks through the door is treated in the same way
he would want to be treated.
But running a pharmacy is a little more tricky
than other businesses.
The healthcare climate is constantly changing,
he said. Everything is highly regulated.
Despite the challenges, McBain Family
Pharmacy and Lake City Family Pharmacy
are proud to be serving Lake, McBain and the
surrounding areas and the Gildes look forward to
what the coming years have to offer.

Personal service guaranteed

At Mikes Body Shop
in Marion, the customer
comes first, says owner
Mike Grice.
We always do what is
right for the customer,
no matter what, he
says.
Mikes Body Shop
opened in 1983.
I wanted to open my
own business and work for myself, Grice recalls.
I had a background in body work. I saw a need for
a body shop in the community and decided to build
my own shop.
The shop experienced its greatest growth in the
1990s.
The economy was great and there wasnt so
much government intervention, he adds.
Today, Grices biggest challenge is finding good
help. But he has a small, experienced staff backing
him up. His son, David, who has worked for the
family business for 20 years, runs the shop, paints
and does body work. The staff also consists of
mechanic Scott -- another longtime employee and
secretary Lori.
They enjoy working together and each has a focus
on one thing: the customer.
Take care of your customers, Grice says. They
will remember that.

In a small town, personal service is very

important and something that we are very proud
of, he says. We know everyones name. No job
is too big or too small for us. We take care of our
customers, no matter what they need.

Problem-solvers for growers

Morgan Composting, Inc., strives to be a driving force in

agribusiness that promotes sustainable soil practices.
The company was founded in 1996 by Brad Morgan
and his father, Dale Morgan. Composting was initially a
solution to dispose of manure on the family dairy farm,
says Brad Morgan, who also is company president.
Several years and tons of manure later, the cows have
long since been sold and the Morgans have perfected highquality, all organic compost, he says.
We never dreamed it would develop into such a diverse
company. We started just selling compost, to now having a
retail store, making custom blends, manufacturing liquid
fertilizers and so much more, Morgan adds. We are proud
of the family business it has become.
Today, the company is owned by Brad Morgan and his two
sons, Jeremie and Justin. Jeremie Morgan is the outdoor
foreman, and Justin Morgan is the vice president.
Dale Morgan remains involved in all aspects of the
company, including controlling manure management and
record keeping.
The Morgans have experienced much growth these past

20 years, We are continuously increasing our customer

base and growing our staff, Morgan says. Were also
proud to have the opportunity to work with our dealer
network...with some 90 dealers throughout Michigan. The
past two to four years have experienced exponential growth
of 30 to 35 percent per year.
But that success didnt come without challenges.
Mother Nature tends to be our biggest challenge, he
says. We are also challenged to keep up and compete with
conventional products with a natural/organic alternative.
The companys mission is for excellence in service to
customers, the community and the environment.
We offer alternative solutions for any growing
operation that cannot be found in box stores, Morgan
adds. Our customer service is second to none. We like to
refer to ourselves as a solution company, meaning that any
grower can come to us with a problem, and we will develop
a solution.

Pulling A Great Life

Northland Trailers in Cadillac is truly a labor of love

a love thats spanned more than 46 years.
In 1968, Muskegon natives Everett and Nancy Rowe
decided to take their love for camping and the up
north lifestyle and turn it into a business. The plan
was simple, they would move north and start selling
campers. The simple idea worked.
Nearly 50 years after they opened their doors, Everett
and Nancy have created a strong business and lasting
legacy in Cadillac. Now semi-retired, their son, Mike
Rowe (not that Mike Rowe), has taken the wheel.
By working together, we are able to take time off on
weekends and even enjoy a vacation now and then,

said Nancy. Being closer to the U.P., we have taken

several trips to the Upper Peninsula and Canada.
But dont expect the Rowes to disappear any time
soon. After moving to Cadillac so many years ago, they
have become part of the fabric of the town.
We have become known to the community over the
years, said Nancy. And we have made a lot of friends
here.
With those firm roots, and the help of their son, Mike,
the Rowes and Northland Trailers are sure to remain a
part of the Cadillac landscape.

Carrying on a legacy
Located on the shores of
Lake Cadillac, Rosa Blanca
Bodega & Eatery honors a
family tradition that began
more than 25 years ago.
Many may remember this
business as Tillies Party
Store, which was founded
by the Snider and Linden
families. Joan Linden ran
the party store named in
honor of her mother, Tillie
DeJulian, while her sister,
the late Loretta Snider, ran
Marina Ristorante next door.
The party store initially
was known as Gold Cone
and opened around 1989. A
liquor store was added on to
the business in 1999.
The
Runyon
family
purchased the business in October 2014.
Rosa Blanca pays homage to the sisters Italian
heritage, as well as their appreciation for family, food
and drink, owner Scott Runyon says.
Today, Rosa Blanca boasts the largest liquor and craft
beer selection in Cadillac 1,300-plus. It features 500plus wine portfolio that primarily features smaller
chateaus, vineyards and wineries that arent featured
in big-box stores, Runyon says.
Its that unique selection that sets Rosa Blanca apart,
he says.
I think there are a lot of great businesses in Cadillac.
In fact, local establishments make it very challenging
to gain new customer base because they are so great,
he adds. I think our greatness comes from the fact that

WINE.
BEER.
SPIRITS.

we are forging a service based on the niches that arent

currently represented in Cadillac, at least all in one
place.
Rosa Blanca continues to redefine itself in the
wake of the acquisition. When it comes to customers,
Runyon believes in the Golden Rule treat others how
you would like to be treated, Runyon says.
While this notion is ultra-subjective today, we
attempt to drive home the ideas of respect, kindness
and empathy, he says. If I hear otherwise, I want to
know.

premier candy shop since

Paul and Helen Beardsley
took over ownership and
later sold it their daughter,
Janeen Russell, in 2002.
I had been a beautician
in town for many years, she
said. I was just ready for
something different, so when
my parents put the shop up
for sale, I took a leap.
Part of the allure of the
family business for Janeen is
that her kids were able to grow up working in the store.
My daughter Jasmine, grew up here, she said.
Before she graduated from MSU and left to start her
career, she trained the rest of the staff on making fudge
and caramel corn.
Her son, JP, on the other hand, didnt stray too far
from home. In 2013, he became partners with Janeen
and opened a second location in Saugatuck, Michigan
with plans to open a third location in the near future.
Aside from her children being part of the business,
Janeen points to her dedicated employees who have

become part of The

With this business,
all of the employees
have become family.
Without them, The
Sweet Shop couldnt
continue.
From the handcrafted
homemade

to
the

Janeen tries to use
only fresh, Michigan

are among the many

A Spiritual Journey
Sheila was searching for a place to hold prayer
meetings and offer encouragement to others. That
search ended in the form of a new business, The
Ultimate Gift Shop, in downtown Cadillac.
Though Sheila didnt always intend to go into a
family business, she knew she could count on her
family to support her.
Part of the benefit of being in a family business is
that they are part of it, right there in heart and soul,
said Sheila. My biggest supporter behind the scenes
is my husband, Jim. He encourages me daily to go
beyond what I can imagine.
In addition to her husband, Sheila also gets more
tangible help from her mother, Nancy, who Sheila
describes as a huge blessing. She can often be found
in the store rearranging merchandise or elsewhere
running errands. More recently, her 13-year-old
granddaughter, Faith, has begun learning to run the
cash register and shares her excitement when she
sees something new in the store.
While her business deals in products such as Love
Michigan Apparel, Cherry Republic Foods, pies from
Grand Traverse Pie Company, straits area smoked
fish and now Cadillac Tees, her approach to running
it is decidedly spiritual.
Whatever we do, we must glorify God in some
way, she said. We love to give back to various
groups and people and we patronize vendors who do,
too. Ultimate Gifts is first about spiritual inspiration.
The things we sell, the gift shop, is a way to support
that in a real world way.
What you may find surprising about The Ultimate
Gift shop is that you will find gifts hand-crafted by
local artisans.

One of the challenges Sheila faces on a daily basis is

Triumph and Tribulation

For Gerard Winkle, owning his own business
is a miracle.
The story began in McBain, in the middle of
the last century with a family in the midst of a
tragedy.
My dad was in the hospital for three years.
When he died, I was 6 years old. We had nothing,
said Gerard Winkle, owner of VanDrie Home
Furnishings. And now I look at this miracle
of owning my own businessand I tell many
young peopleif you work hard and believe, its
amazing what you can do with Gods help.
Fast-forward to the Vietnam era and youll
find Winkle, a college graduate and member of
the National Guard, employed by John VanDrie
in McBain.
With five employees and 6,000 sq. feet of appliances,
furniture and floor coverings, the original VanDrie store
was a training ground for Winkle who began to learn the
trade from his mentor, John VanDrie.
He told me that if anyone comes in wanting something,
then I want to know about it, said Winkle. If you have a
customer and you meet that need, you have a sale. If you
dont do anything about it, you dont have a business.
Two years later, VanDrie left on a two-month trip to
Florida and left Winkle in charge.
How he trusted me with the checkbook in my second
year, Ill never know, said Winkle. He believed in me
and allowed me to build the business.
And build it he did. With four locations in as many
communities, VanDrie Home Furnishings quickly
became the areas leading furniture, appliance, mattress
and floor covering supplier and Winkle, along with Bruce
DeRuiter, became a partner in the business.
But for Winkle, in 1986 the Lord reminded him who
was in charge. A flood at the Big Rapids store left $200,000
floating away.

The flood was

the most humbling thing weve ever been through,
he said. We didnt have insurance because we never
imagined we would have a flood. I was helpless.
But Winkle faced Gods trial with resolve. With the
help of good friends and family, they were able to clean
up and reopen the building just three days later.
Today VanDrie is very much a family operation, with
sons Jeremy and Travis taking leadership roles and
Gerard running the operation in much the same way
his mentor did over 60 years agothat is, with a Godly
commitment to family, community and giving back.
With Jeremy and Travis taking the reins and his third
son, Aaron, Head of School at Living Stones Academy
in Grand Rapids, Gerard and his wife, Bev, have time to
reflect on what he calls good fortune, and what the rest
of us might call a lot of hard work.
VanDries Home Furnishings now has showrooms in
Cadillac, Houghton Lake, Traverse City and Big Rapids.

Making Cadillac shine

They had businesses throughout the
United States, but Karen Roncari and
the late Angelo Roncari wanted to come
home and set up shop in Cadillac.
Karen and Angelo, along with
daughters, Sarah, Emily and Julie,
founded Wexford Jewelers in 1995. Today,
the second generation runs the business
known for its custom- designed, handcarved pieces, as well as heirlooms and
antiques. All pieces are created in house
and can be repaired in house.
Karen Roncari continues to own
Wexford Jewelers. Emily and Jason
Nichols and Keith and Julie Terwilliger
oversee the stores operations.
Today, Wexford Jewelers is as
successful as ever, according to
Julies husband, Keith Terwilliger.
The business has been recognized as
Northern Michigans favorite jeweler. Its staff has
created pieces for members of the entertainment
industry, as well medical professionals in New York.
Starting in the late 2000s, with our online store
selling worldwide and a revival of the economy in
Northern Michigan, we believe the best times are
yet to come, he says.
Terwilliger also credits the contributions of the
staff.
We believe that staying consistent and working
hard for the best possible good of the customer is
our major factor, he adds.

Not every family can work together successfully,

but this family does, thanks to hard work, as well
as love and admiration for each other, Terwilliger
says. And those attributes benefit the customer, he
adds.
It is a great reward to see our pieces throughout
the community, to be known by people around the
world, he says. Making Cadillac shine brighter is
such a joy.
Wexford Jewelers is located at 801 N. Mitchell St.

Locally Made Products

David and Mary Stark didnt spend years planning
and dreaming about their business. In fact, they hadnt
really thought much about it at all until they tried to
hire someone to produce some custom millwork for
their new home.
We were planning to build a new home in 1999 and
visited a local woodworking shop to inquire about them
milling some trim for our house, said Mary. They said
they were about to go out of business and needed a buyer
they couldnt fill our order.
The Starks became the buyers the previous owners
were looking for and Wexford Wood Workings was born
while the Starks new home was put on hold.
Sometimes it feels like the business has become our
new home with all the time we spend here, she said.
For the Starks, it has been an uphill climb since day
one but that has meant steady growth. The last few years
have been the hardest, however, with a tough economy
and little building taking place anywhere. But Mary
refuses to let that get her down.
My nature is not one of giving up, she said. I hope
all my hard work will pay off if not for David and I,
then at least for our children and grandchildren.
For the Starks, working as a family hasnt been
difficult, but requires coordination of schedules and a
lot of work after hours.
Our son, Brad, is our primary machinist, said
Mary. But he only works as needed after he works his
regular shift for another company. A lot of our work
takes place outside of the regular business hours as well,
especially when it comes to research, bookkeeping and
maintenance/ repair work.
The nature of the business creates a situation where
every day is unique and depends upon the specific project
on which the team is working. On any given day, they
might be working on custom millwork for a new home,
creating custom parts for Rec-Boat Holdings, replicating

traditional trim on a historic home restoration project

or any other request that comes through the door.
The Starks cant do all this alone. Theyve hired one
full-time and two part-time employees to help out.
We couldnt do it without them, said Mary.
But its important to the Starks that every customer
feels like their project is important, no matter how big
or small.
Every customer, and their particular project, is just
as special to us as it is to them, said Mary. We want a
satisfied customer.
To that end, every project is a custom job.
Everything is made-to-order; we dont have any
finished or milled inventory on hand, said Mary.
We work with the customer in the selection of their
pattern, size and species of wood. We mill once the
specifics are determined.

Spreading the warmth

Some people dread winter.
Others look forward to hitting the slopes and
snowmobile trails.
Aaron Pluger is excited for the start of winter
for another reason.
Hes looking forward to selling more outdoor
wood stoves to keep homes warm and cozy.
Aaron and his brother, Brad, run White Pine
Outdoor Boilers near McBain. The brothers, -along with their parents, Mike and Pam Pluger
purchased the business in 2012. A Central boiler
dealer, White Pine also sells outdoor wood stoves,
outdoor pellet boilers, underground ThermoPEX
pipe, as well as parts and accessories.
White Pine has been in existence for more than
10 years. The brothers saw an opportunity to keep
the business running. More than 1,000 outdoor
wood stoves had been sold and new stoves were in
demand, as well as the need for parts and service,
Aaron says.
It was hard to keep outdoor wood stoves in
stock during the first two years of business, when
energy prices skyrocketed and the winters were long
and cold, he recalls.
However, the family faced a challenge in early
2015 after learning non-energy-efficient outdoor
woodstoves would not be manufactured after the
federal government placed restrictions on them.
They were skeptical about the new high-efficient
outdoor wood stoves because of the higher cost, they
required dry wood to burn, as well as other factors
But soon the business was flooded with calls from
customers wanting the old school wood stoves,
Aaron says.
White Pine received its first load of high-efficient

outdoor wood stoves earlier this year. Despite their

initial reservations, the Plugers found that the higher
cost wasnt as terrible as they thought and the new
stoves burn 50 percent less wood and can be easily
switched out with older models.
We sold a new unit in March, and the customer
loves the new unit and how it operates, Aaron said.
Since then, we have sold a couple others, so I can

A Bakery Off the Beaten Path

Yoders of Tustin was established in 2014, and has

quickly become the go-to venue for baked goods,
deli food and rustic furniture. Centered around
locally produced goods, a product purchased from
Yoders couldnt be more fresh.
We carry lots of different local items, said
Ferman Yoder. Our furniture is locally made. We
have beds, dressers, benches, tables and chairs,
outdoor furniture and much more. We also have
corn from a local farmer and were actively
seeking more local suppliers.
From their specialty homemade bread to their
farm raised meats and cheeses, Yoders is truly a
fresh food paradise.
The bakery really fulfilled a need in this

community, said Ferman. We have homemade

doughnuts on Fridays and Saturdays and we
make sandwiches with our homemade bread that
we sell in our deli.
Although Ferman had always been in the family
business, the time was right to get something
going in Tustin.
We saw a need for a family-run tourist attraction
in the community, said Ferman, who began the
business with help from Junior Coblentz and
LaMar Miller.
With so much buzz about Yoders in Tustin, a tourist
attraction may be just what they have created.
Yoders is located on 200th Ave in Tustin or can
be reached via phone at 829-3023

Upscale retail on a dime

Your Sisters Closet
continues its tradition of
offering high-end clothing
for the budget-minded.
Stephanie
Trombly
brought upscale retail to
the area when she opened
this consignment shop in
2008. Kaycie Ramsey bought
Your Sisters Closet from
Trombly last year.
Ramsey had worked in
downtown Cadillac for 15
years and decided to strike
out on her own after learning
that Trombly was closing up
shop.
Business has been steady
and busy this past year,
Ramsey says.
People still want nice things, but at a quarter of
the costs, she says.
The biggest challenge shes faced this past year
is: Everything. If something goes wrong, the buck
stops with me.
Ramsey accepts only high-quality clothes and
tries not to carry big-box store brands. She tries to
make every customer feel special.
Im very picky of what we carry, she adds.
Also, Ramsey has been using her business to help
her community. She works with many charities and
has teamed up with Footprints in Time, an adult

day care for disabled adults thats held at Rehoboth

Reformed Church in McBain.
If anyone would like to bring an item in and put
it under that charity, we can do that, she says.
Husband Mark and daughter Maddi also help out
at the store. The family is trying to get the word out
about items they offer for cosplayers.
I love seeing what my store can do for other
people, Ramsey says. I know that I can make it
better because Im in control.
Your Sisters Closet is located at 108 N. Mitchell
St. in downtown Cadillac. For more information,

Its a Gas
Donovan
Ziehm
began
delivering 100-pound propane
tanks
in
1962.
When
customers started asking for
bulk delivery to their homes,
Donovan found a niche and
Ziehm LP Gas was born.
With continuous growth
throughout the last 50 years,
Ziehm is now able to serve
a large portion of the area
with plants in Gladwin,
Cadillac, Evart, Scottville,
Bear Lake and Irons.
With
an
expanding
business, Donovan needed
people he could trust to
run the regional plants.
For Donovan, there was no one better for
the job than his daughters, who all were
active in the business at one time. Connie
manages the Bear Lake branch and Kathy
managed the Scottville location until her
passing in 1995. The branch was later taken
over by her sister, Tami.
As one of the last family-owned
businesses in the propane industry, the
Ziehm family is proud to live and work in
the same communities as the people they
serve. Without corporate influence and pure bottomline thinking they are also able to focus on their
founding principle: to provide excellent customer
service to each customer while keeping prices as low

as possible.
The Ziehms can be found at any of the satellite
locations or online at www.ziehmpropane.com.
