Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics.

Jamie Lawsons Wasnt expecting that fits the acoustic/ pop genremeaning it fits conventions of both performance and narrative. His
video focuses on an illustrative narrative of his song in order to convey
emotions and thus; bring the audience closer.
The music video; like many pop videos focuses on many close ups of the
performers face; (whether it is the artist or an actor) in order to allow
the audience to sense the emotions the song aims to portray.
Another common element of pop/ acoustic music videos is fading in and
out, this is an element that is particularly present during this music
video. This leads to a fast editing cut which allows the audience to get a
greater sense of the scene without it seeming too abrupt.

There is a strong relationship between the lyrics and the visuals

(either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting)
This is a narrative based music video with no performance
elements, this has been done to allow the audience to fully
engage with the song and therefore bring the audience closer
to the artist as they can sense the raw emotions that he was
trying to convey.
The song is about a mans partner and their life together and
the song ends with his raw pain of when she sadly passed
away from some sort of illness. Instantly this music video
becomes an illustrative performance as the video is based on
a couple, young and in love and their change as they grow
older, and the heartache when she dies.

There is a strong relationship between the lyrics and the

visuals as the cuts are made on the beats of the song,
whether it is a straight cut or whether it is faded out; it
fits the beat and therefore links the lyrics to the visuals.
There is a range of close ups of the couple performing this
music video in order to make the narrative more
believable as the audience can see the emotion on their
faces; creating a more genuine and honest relationship
between both the artist and the audience.

The demands of the record label will include the need of lots of close ups of the artists and the artist
may develop motifs that reoccur throughout their work.

There are many close ups (as previously discussed) of the

performers throughout this music video. This establishes the
characters role within this illustrative music video as the
audience know that the actions of the characters are being
reflected through the lyrics.
The motif of this music video is harder to gage being as Jamie
Lawson himself is not present, but the only motif that could be
considered here is one of love and the heartache love brings
along with it; demonstrating that in the end someone is always
left heartbroken.

There are frequent references to the notion of looking and

particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
I would say that throughout certain parts of this music video
there is voyeuristic treatment of the female body, but I think it
is done in a more innocent way. There is an intimate scene in
which we see a womans bra laying on the floor- this scene can
be heavily sexualised, yet I think that there is almost an
innocence to this as he finds her so overwhelmingly beautiful
that she isnt objectified, instead she is viewed upon as the
person he loves; her physical appearance is just an element of
her beauty to him.
There is also references to the notion of looking; not only
between the two main characters- but off into the distance
into something greater than that, creating an element of
mystery.

There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other

music videos etc).

This music video has intertextual

references from films such as Now Is
Good and The Fault In Our Stars- both
about a love story and a heart break after
one of them/both of them die from
terminal illnesses. Not only is the story
line the same; the shots used are also
very similar. Looking at The Fault In Our
Stars advert picture, the bottom picture
of the Jamie Lawson video is very similar,
highlighting the intertextual references
further.

Whether the video is primarily performance-based, narrative based or

concept based and how the elements of each are used.

The video is entirely narrative based but from the

perspective of this being the memories/ the life of Jamie
himself. The narrative fits the lyrics beautifully and it
makes an already beautiful song into one of so much
more heartfelt emotion; bringing the audience closer to
the artist as they feel that they get to know him on a
more intimate level.
This creates more revenue as the target audience will
grow as more people will feel a connection with the
song, enhanced by the visuals as a heart break is
something everyone can relate to.
