Road Closure Update

SCDOT Continues to Make Progress on Flood Related Closures
SCDOT continues to
work on the closures
related to the October
2015 flood. All of the
remaining road closures
require full bridge replacement or are related to
dam failures.
The Congaree Road (SC
769) bridge over Cedar
Creek in Richland County
opened on September 1.
Seven more of the remaining twenty-nine closures
are due to bridge failures
and require full bridge

replacement. SCDOT is
projecting that two of
these bridge replacements will be complete
by the end of October,
Old Shoals Road (S-151)
in Aiken County and
Hope Station Road (S170) in Newberry County. SCDOT continues
to monitor all flood
impacted bridges for
signs of latent damage.
Twenty-two of the
remaining closures are

due to dam failures. At

one of these locations,
Devils Backbone Road
(S-59)
in
Lexington
County, repair work has
progressed rapidly after
the owner elected to
abandon the dam structure. The contract for
this work was awarded
to Cherokee, Inc. in July
and the anticipated completion date is September
30, 2016.

Bluff Road Bridge Replacements

An inspection in Spring
of 2016 showed erosion
around the supports of
three bridges on Bluff
Road (SC 48) in Richland
County - Dry Branch,
Cedar Creek and Back
Swamp.
The original
1940s design could not
be repaired without a
long term closure, so
SCDOT opted to replace
all three bridges under an
emergency declaration.
Emergency
procurement for design and
construction was used to

expedite project completion.

A design-build
contract for the three
structures was awarded
to Crowder Construc-

tion Company on June 2,

2016 for $5,885,000. All
three bridges are scheduled to be open to traffic
by December 31, 2016.
