Points on a problem set have the same weight as points on an examination. The problem
set points total to the same sum (150 points) as the three hour exams. You have several
days to complete this assignment. We encourage students to work together on problem
sets. You can get help in any discussion section, in the Tutor Area, or during your
instructors office hours. Because of this, there is no reason for not scoring 100% on
every problem set!
Problem 1. (ten points) In the vicinity of a Guaca-15 moon the starship Enterprise
unexpectedly encountered an inverse pseudo-hyperbolic anti-boson field anomaly causing
severe knotting in the strings comprising the up-quarks in all neutrons. Damage was
minimal, but the science officer reported that the labels on a set of bottles in the chemistry
lab had fallen off. All the solutions were colorless and identical in appearance. The
science officer carefully measured the pH of each solution and recorded the results in the
table below. Your job is to assist the science officer by using the pH data to match each
label with the correct solution. Computation will be necessary on most parts. The
attached table has the Ka and Kb data needed for this problem set.

Problem 2. (seven points) All the solutions referred to in this problem are 0.10 mol/L at
25 C. A number of the substances are ionic compounds, and, as a result, will be 100%
dissociated into their component ions in water. Thus, some parts of the problem deal with
the behavior of the specific ions in water! You will also find it very, very, very, very, very,

acid-conjugate base table at the end of this assignment. This problem requires no
computation. Some problems may have more than one correct answer; all correct
answers should be checked off on D2L.
