HISTORY OF L'ANZA
The Beginning
LANZA was introduced to the professional Haircare industry in 1985. It was the first major brand of Haircare to address individual hair
needs through collections of formulas designed to treat hair and achieve therapeutic results. These proprietary formulations were
designed around a revolutionary breakthrough the Keratin Bond System (KBS). This internationally recognized protein delivery
system uses an exact ratio of hydrolyzed keratin amino acids from human hair, vital minerals and herbal extracts, giving the hair
unprecedented luster and manageability. With KBS technology, the inner structure of the hair was dramatically strengthened to make it
look and feel stronger, softer, and remarkably healthy.
In 2003, L'ANZA joined the family at DAVEXLABS. With over 60 years of experience developing and marketing salon products,
DAVEXLABS continues to bring L'ANZA to the next level with advanced healing technology that Heals, Seals and Protects the hair.
The Next Steps

LANZA pioneered a whole new category of Healing Haircare. Hair is under constant attack from the environment and more people are
chemically processing their hair. These new stress factors began affecting the hair. The hair needs to be strengthened and fortified to
defend itself from the harsh aggressors its exposed to on a daily basis. L'ANZA therapeutic formulas target the causes of hair damage
not just the symptoms. The Keratin Bond System was enhanced, and emerged as the Keratin Bond System 2 (KB2). Using the
same base of Keratin Amino Acids found in KBS, KB2 includes the Meadowfoam Flower Seed Complex and Moisture Retain Complex to
work synergistically with KBS, adding extra moisture to the hair. The products containing KB2 can be now be found within the L'ANZA
Healing Collection.

Composition of Hair
To understand how hair is healed, we must first understand how hair is structured. Hair fiber is composed of:

As hair becomes damaged, the cuticle is raised, exposing the cortex, and the hair fiber loses protein, moisture, and minerals.
LANZA Healing Haircare replaces these nutrients, and then it seals the cuticle, locking them in and protecting the hair.
Keratin Protein
Keratin is a protein found in human hair, nails, and the outer layers of the skin. Keratin Protein is comprised of 19 amino acids, which are
the essential building blocks for healthy, strong hair. Without them, hair becomes weak, dull and lifeless. To properly heal the hair, we
replace all amino acids to restore balance and strength.

There are many sources of protein, including vegetable and animal sources; however, it is important to understand the Molecular Weight
of these proteins, and how they are compatible with human hair.
Molecular Weight & Compatibility of Protein
Molecular Weight (mw) determines how deep a protein can penetrate into the hair structure. Protein with a low molecular weight is
smaller in size, so it can penetrate past the cuticle and go deep into the cortex of the hair. For example, Hydrolyzed Keratin Amino
Acids with a 150 mw is significantly smaller than a Hydrolyzed Oat Protein with a 2000 mw.
Additionally, proteins must be compatible with the hairs protein structure. This chart shows the ranges of molecular weights for
different proteins, as well as their compatibility with human hair.

L'ANZA utilizes Hydrolyzed Keratin Amino Acids that contain the same 19 amino acids as those found in human hair. These amino
acids have a small molecular weight of only 150 350 mw, making it easier to penetrate deep into the hair fiber.
Additionally, it contains extra amounts of three amino acids that are most vital to hair health and color attachment.
Cysteine and Cystine for Moisture
Cysteine and Cystine are naturally-occurring, water-loving amino acids. Since human hair is approximately 14% Cysteine and Cystine,
their presence helps keep hair moisturized.
Tyrosine for Color Attachment
Tyrosine is also an important amino acid, especially for color-processed hair. During the permanent color procedure, molecules
adhere to Tyrosine. The abundance of Tyrosine results in more vibrant, longer-lasting haircolor.

Through this system, Keratin Amino Acids are actually embedded deep inside each
individual hair. The protein functions synergistically with the Meadowfoam Flower
Seed Complex and Moisture Retain Complex to heal and moisturize. These
double-positively charged healers are attracted to damaged areas which are
negatively charged. This action allows the hair to heal from within, so the external
texture becomes smooth, shiny, and healthier.
Minerals and Moisture

As mentioned previously, hair is not only comprised of protein, but also moisture and minerals. L'ANZA has developed two complexes to
specifically replace the proper moisture and minerals to the hair.

The L'ANZA Meadowfoam Flower Seed Complex adds shine, hydration and structural integrity to the hair
healing dry, damaged hair more effectively than ever. The oils from the Meadowfoam Flower Seeds contain
lipids essential to proper hydration of the hair.
Interesting fact: Meadowfoam is native to the western coast of North America. Its name is derived from the
white blooming canopy which gives the image of white foam covering the soil. Since 1959, the Meadowfoam
plant has brought its many benefits to personal care products.

The L'ANZA Moisture Retain Complex contains an exclusive blend of mineral-fortified PCAs (Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid). Not only
do these advanced ingredients help maintain hairs moisture; they also replenish the necessary minerals lost during chemical
processing. Moisture Retain Complex contains proprietary blends of four essential PCAs.
Sodium PCA: A hygroscopic ingredient that attracts moisture from the air. It is used as a moisturizer and is a
stronger hydrating agent than the traditional glycerin-based ingredients.
Magnesium PCA: A super-moisturizing agent that fights against fatigue and stress by rehabilitating hair fiber.
Zinc PCA: Helps restore healing activity by fortifying the cortical wall while infusing moisture.
Manganese PCA: Helps in the hydrolysis of hair cells.
All PCAs are extraordinary humectants which reinforce the ability of the KHS to attract and maintain moisture inside of the hair and
dramatically improve elasticity.
HEALING TECHNOLOGY
As technology has advanced, scientists have discovered new ways to make ingredients smaller so small they have to be measured in
nanometers. Some of the ingredients in L'ANZA Healing Haircare, particularly botanicals and moisturizers, are now smaller, thanks to

Nano Science. These ingredients measure 100 nanometers (designated as 10 on our packaging). This size delivers moisturizing elements
deep into the hairs cortex, rather than accumulating on the surface, so they wont weigh hair down. The result is outstanding softness and
silkiness with exceptional body, even for the finest hair stands.
Nano Science 10 means:
Science has allowed us to make ingredients smaller.
Smaller ingredients penetrate deeper into the hair.
Healing works within the hair and products wont weigh hair down.
UV Protection
UV sun rays have long been recognized as damaging to the skin. But these rays are also damaging to hair and one of the main reasons
haircolor fades. There are 3 types of UV rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. The wavelengths are measured in nanometers the shorter the
wavelength, the more damaging the rays. Below are the wavelength ranges.
UVA: 400 nm to 320 nm
UVB: 320 nm to 280 nm
UVC: 280 nm to 100 nm the shortest and most damaging!
Triple UVA, UVB and UVC Protection

L'ANZA is the only company that utilizes UV color protectors to guard against all three rays, ensuring the maximum protection from
sun damage and fading of haircolor. They are in each product to ensure full-range protection under varying conditions.

Shampoos & Surfactants

All shampoos contain surfactants, which supply the cleansing action and lathering properties. Surfactant is an abbreviation for surfaceactive agents because they help break the surface tension of water, allowing it to better remove oils and debris from the hair. There are
many types of surfactants. The first and most common surfactant is soap. In fact, the first shampoos were solutions made of water, soap,
and sodium carbonate. It was the British who coined the word shampoo from champo, a Hindi word meaning to massage or knead.
Surfactants are divided into two categories: Sulfate and Non-Sulfate.

In the early part of the 20 century, sulfate-based surfactants emerged as new types of cleansers. Lauryl Alcohol was isolated from
coconut fat and palm kernel oil and used to make the first sulfate surfactant: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Sulfate surfactants are widely
used in shampoos because they are effective cleansers and lather well.

Sulfate-Free Surfactants
There are also surfactants that are not sulfate based, and are just as effective at cleansing the hair. In the past, sulfate-free surfactants
were not widely used because they are slightly less lathering than sulfate surfactants.
Today, L'ANZA technology has allowed us to develop blends of non-sulfate surfactants that provide a rich lather in a sulfate-free
shampoo, particularly with the addition of botanical extracts such as Gugo Bark, which naturally enhance the bubbling factor.
In todays market, consumers are looking for sulfate-free shampoos because these blends are even gentler on the hair and scalp, and
have been proven to extend the life of haircolor.

Sodium Chloride-Free
Sodium Chloride*, also known as table salt, has long been used in shampoos as a thickening agent. Recent studies have shown that
Sodium Chloride in shampoos may contribute to color fading. Additionally, the introduction of new chemical services, such as
Brazilian straightening systems, require that the client does not use shampoo that contains Sodium Chloride as it may reverse the
straightening effects.
All of the shampoos in the LANZA Advanced Healing Collection are Sodium Chloride-Free, and the label on the front of each bottle
indicates preserves haircolor.
*Note: Sodium Chloride is a specific salt that affects haircolor or other chemical processes. Sodium and Chlorine are independent
elements that may be part of many other ingredients, such as Sodium Lauroyl Sarconsinate and Behentrimonium Chloride. These
other ingredients should not be confused with Sodium Chloride, even though names may look similar.

additional color protection. The L'ANZA Healing ColorCare products provide extra color protection through the use of the Flower Shield
Complex. Haircolor lasts up to 107% longer.
Flower Shield Complex

The Flower Shield Complex is a specialized blend of flower extracts designed to shield hair from UV rays that cause color to fade. This
complex contains the same potent anti-fade protectors that flowers use for their own color protection.
Powerful phyto-compounds are extracted from seven, color-specific flowers: Echinacea, Cornflower, Green Orchid, Rose, Calendula,
Hibiscus and White Gardenia. These flowers were chosen because they contain special ingredients to protect colors in specific UV
wavelengths.
These seven extracts provide full-spectrum color protection and guard against fading in all haircolor shades and levels. The result:
haircolor stays true and radiant longer even the brightest reds. Independent studies have shown that the Flower Shield Complex will
extend color life up to 107% longer.

Certified organic botanicals are grown on land where chemical pesticides, petrochemical fertilizers, or other chemical toxins have not
been used for at least seven years. These crops are certified organic by the government.
Wildcrafted
These botanicals are sourced from the wild, such as the Amazon Rainforest, the tropical islands of Polynesia and the mountains of
China and India. They are not farmed-raised and have not been treated with chemical pesticides, toxic chemicals or petrochemical
fertilizers. Since these sources are wild, there is no government regulation to certify them in the same way you have certified
organic ingredients.

Do not use on hair that is color-treated with high-lift color, heavily highlighted or bleached.
1. Shampoo
Purify hair with LANZA Ultimate Treatment Chelating Shampoo or other chelating shampoo and towel dry.
2. Heal
Heal the hair prior to service. Apply LANZA Ultimate Treatment Deep Treatment and Power Boosters
directly to hair and distribute evenly with a wide-tooth comb. (CAUTION: do not mix with waving lotion). Leave
in hair for 3-5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and towel dry. Leave hair damp for wrapping.
3. Wrap
Wrap damp hair. If hair dries, lightly mist with water.
4. Waving Lotion Place cotton around hairline and a towel at nape of neck. Empty contents of Thermolizer (Part A) into
Waving Lotion bottle (Part B) and shake gently to mix. Lotion will become warm. Apply lotion to all wrapped
rods and re-saturate. Change cotton and towel.
5. Process
Cover head with plastic cap. DO NOT PROCESS UNDER A DRYER OR HEAT SOURCE. Test curl is not necessary
during processing.
NORMAL / FINE HAIR: 20 minutes. No test curl necessary.
COLOR-TREATED HAIR (up to 30 Volume): 15 minutes. Test curl after 10 minutes.
COLOR-TREATED HAIR (up to 40% highlighted): 20 minutes maximum. Test curl after 10 minutes,
then every 5 minutes
6. Rinse
After processing, rinse hair thoroughly for 3-5 minutes with warm water. Towel-blot each rod thoroughly.
7. Neutralize
Shake Neutralizer and thoroughly saturate each rod. Save oz (15 ml) for later use. Wait 5 minutes. Gently
remove rods. Work remaining neutralizer through hair for 1 minute.
8. Rinse
Rinse hair for 3-5 minutes with warm water. Towel blot
9. Heal & Protect Spray on Ultimate Treatment Power Protector and comb through to neutralize odor, rebalance pH and heal
the hair. Style as desired. Do not shampoo or condition hair for 48 hours.

Exothermic (self-heating) process speeds up delivery of ingredients and shortens processing time.
Stop Action Technology prevents damage if processing slightly exceeds recommended time. Makes it user-friendly for the

Ultra-low 0.2% ammonia level means less odor and scalp irritation, so its more comfortable to your clients. (by comparison,
most perms have an ammonia level of 2% to 3%!)
