1. Introduction:
Cancer, a dreadful disease that affects millions of people worldwide.
Cancer patients spend lot of time at hospitals depending on the severity
of their disease. Its treatments affect essentially three groups: doctors,
patients and their loved ones. In India it is estimated that there are 2 to
2.5 million cancer patients at any given point of time with about 0.7
million new cases coming every year and nearly half die every year. Two
third of the new cancers are presented in advance and incurable stage at
the time of diagnosis. More than 60% of these affected patients are in the
prime of their life between the ages of 35 and 65 years. With increase in
life expectancy and changing life styles the number of cancer cases will
be almost three times the current number. To control this problem the
Government of India has launched a National Cancer Control
Programme in 1975 and revised its strategies in 1984-85 stressing on
primary prevention and early detection of cancer.[1]

1.1 Background:
The World Health Organization has said that there could be 50 million
new cancer patients by 2020. In India there are 25 lakh cancer patients
as of 2009, the government hospitals that have cancer treatment facilities
tend to pay no attention to the quality of spaces and the impact it makes
to the human psychology.[1] Cancer has become a big threat to human
beings globally. The most common cancers among men, women and
children are: Men- Prostate, Lung and Colorectal; Women- Breast, Lung
and Colorectal; Children- Leukaemia, Brain tumours and Lymphoma.

1.2 About Cancer:


Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the
potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. It is the second
leading cause of death in the world after cardiovascular diseases. The
most common cause of this disease includes: smoking, radiation,
viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones,
chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise. There are various clinical
treatments to cure cancer: Surgery, Radiation, Chemotherapy,
Immunotherapy, Hormone therapy, Gene therapy.[2]

2. Need of study:

As we can see that there are many cancer cases in India and Cancer is
in alarming state. There are many hospitals in India and their
environment create a different image, one which is strange and
unpleasant to patients visiting there. The built environment of traditional
Indian hospitals are designed with least understanding of the users
physical and psychological needs of the built form. So to give a pleasing
environment for the treatment of patients and to give a proper
environment to the doctors for new research to treat their patients

3. Aim:
To design a warm, inviting place where people could learn to cope with
their diagnosis and meet with friends and family members, as well as
health care professionals. To give an environment targeting the
psychology of cancer patients that helps them feel comfortable and to
provide a good research environment space for doctors to help them
come up with new ways of treatments for their patients.

4. Objective:
- To know the architectural factors affecting behaviour of cancer
-

patients in hospital.
To find and analyse the relationship between the architectural design
of the hospitals and the psychology and behaviour of the cancer
patients.
To give a good and proper research environment for doctors to study
the cause of cancer and find new treatments for patients.

5. Issues:
-

As cancer is increasing in an alarming rate in India there are many


hospitals built which are not designed keeping the needs of users in
mind.

6. Scope:
By giving Good environment for the patients by means of good furniture.
Healing landscapes provides restorative benefits to patients. Water body
helps create healing environment.
