LESSON PLAN (Small Group Lesson)

DAY: Friday

DATE: 9th August, 2016

TIME: 20 mins

YEAR: 7

LEARNING AREA: Mathematics

TOPIC: Linear Equations and

Plotting Coordinates

CURRICULUM CONTENT DESCRIPTION (from ACARA):

Given coordinates, plot points on the Cartesian plane, and find coordinates for a given point.
(ACMNA178).
Solve simple linear equations. (ACMNA179).
STUDENTS PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Students are able to identify linear equations and plot them on the positive quadrant of a graph.
Students are also able to identify the x-axis and y-axis and can plot coordinates onto the positive
quadrant of the graph.
LEARNING PURPOSE:
The purpose of this task is for students to expand on their identification and knowledge of plotting
coordinates as well as being able to write the coordinate pairs (ordered pairs).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
EVALUATION:
Students will be able to expand on their
The lesson objective will be achieved when the

plot the coordinates on a positive quadrant in
the order in which they appear. The students
will also be able to solve simple linear
equations. This will be done by questioning,
discussion and observation relating to the
learning objective.
PREPARATION AND RESOURCES:
Students will need:
- Pens, pencils, ruler, eraser
- Worksheet Ordered Pairs
Teacher will need:
- Pens
- Worksheets Ordered Pairs, Mystery Picture, Showing Route, Linear Equations
CATERING FOR DIVERSITY:
In order to cater for diversity, I have two extra worksheets which involved the students plotting
coordinates onto a graph and connecting the dots to draw a picture and connecting the fits to find
the route of the animal to the food. For those who are struggling, I will adjust the timing of my
lesson and focus on the things they are struggling with whilst the other students are working on
their worksheets. I will assist them by explaining further what exactly the task is asking of them
and explain the things they dont understand about the lesson.
TIMING
LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Introduction/Warm Up
5 mins
1.
- Gain students attention by; asking for attention, waiting for everyone to be
quiet.
- Explain to the students that they will be completing two worksheets and
that there are extra worksheets if they finish the first one.
- Ask if they have any questions. Accept questions, comment on each and
answer with the appropriate response.
2.

Ask for students attention to front and then distribute the worksheets.
Quickly go through the worksheets with the students and explain to them
what they need to do.
First worksheet: write the ordered pair for each item that is on the graph
(e.g. Watermelon is (2,7,)).
Explain and emphasise that the x-axis must always be the first coordinate
and the y-axis is always the second coordinate.
Ask students if they have any questions about the worksheet.
Second worksheet: explain to the students that they need to solve the
linear equations and plot them onto their graph paper.

3.
- Ask students if they have any questions about the worksheets.
- If students have any questions, accept all questions and answer
appropriately.

Lesson
4.
- Tell the students to start working through their worksheets.
- Once the students have started working through their worksheets, my role
is to; encourage students who are having difficulty and praise and comment
on individuals where necessary whilst checking over each students work
and observing.
- Ask students if they need any assistance with their work and help
accordingly.
- Go to each student and check their work as they go, checking if the
students understand the content.
5.
- If students have finished the first two worksheets early, distribute another
worksheet and explain what the need to do.
- Students need to plot the coordinates on the graph and connect the dots so
the picture is revealed.

Conclusion/Evaluation
6.
- Ask the students if they have any questions about the work, comment on
each question and answer accordingly.
- Question students by pointing to a place on the graph, and asking them
what the coordinates are.
7.
- Ask students to pack away quietly and join the rest of the class.
