SCHOOL REDISTRICTING
ARGUMENT
1. HOME
A. I bought my home in August of 2014 with back pay from my disability.
i.

I bought it specifically so my children would be in the Elon/Western

district.

ii.

I did not look for houses in any other school districts.

iii.

I live closer to Western now than at any point previously and all of
my step-children attended Western.

2. MIDDLE SCHOOLS
A. NC School Report Cards
i.

In every academic category, Western Middle School outscores

Turrentine

ii.

My children would be at level 4 or 5 and EOGs indicate Western

Middle has a much stronger performance than Turrentine

iii.

Western Middle has lower teacher turnover

iv.

Western Middle has lower criminal acts

v.

Western Middle has higher access to technology than Turrentine

vi.

Teacher effectiveness was higher in all categories for Western

Middle as compared to Turrentine

B. Teacher Surveys
i.

At Turrentine: 53% think students do not understand rules and

expectations

ii.

78% say students do not follow the rules

iii.

67% indicate school administration is inconsistent with enforcement

iv.

52% say teachers are unsupported by administration

v.

53% indicate teachers are inconsistent

vi.

New teachers were not supported in areas such as: the subject they
taught 50%, using data to ID student needs 50%, and
differentiating instruction for individual needs 50%

vii.

At Western Middle: 82% of students understand expectations

viii.

75% follow them

ix.

School administration is 41% consistent

x.

The administration is very supportive of their teachers at 72%

xi.

And teachers are consistent 52%

xii.

New teachers were better supported in the aforementioned

categories at 33%

xiii.

Therefore, WESTERN MIDDLE has a BETTER LEARNING

ENVIRONMENT!

3. HIGH SCHOOLS
A. NC School Report Card
i.

Western scored better in Math I and III

ii.

Western scored better in ACT proficiency

iii.

Western had a higher graduation rate

iv.

Better achievement

v.

Better attendance

vi.

Better teacher retention

vii.

Less crime than Williams

viii.

Teacher effectiveness at Western HS exceeds Williams in every

category.

B. Teacher Surveys
i.

Facility and resources scored higher in every category at Western

ii.

Western teachers score their work environment safer which means

my childs learning environment is SAFER!

4. MY CHILDREN
A. My children are shy, quiet, good students, and obey the rules.
i.

My daughter has just developed a group of friends this year.

ii.

I want her to go into a middle school that supports her educational

growth and her emotional/social growth.

iii.

I feel that the lawless environment at Turrentine would distract

from her studies and make her anxious about school.

iv.

I want her to be able to build onto the friendships she has

established rather than be severed from them because of random
school district changes.

v.

I want her to have the best education possible.

vi.

I want her to be safe.

vii.

My son is in 2nd grade but I want the same things for him as he
leaves for middle and high school.
