The Book 'Tribes of Bombay' has description of 'Khatris'.

It describes 'Khatris' as

Tall & Fair and wearing Sacred Thread.

Came from Sind in 16-17th century tempted by the strong European demand for their cloth.
Claim to be of superior status with Widow marriage custom followed, which by far was a rare custom those days.
Keenly worship 'Devi's'
Population of 38000 odd in 1901, when this book was written.

To what I have understood and it is my personal interpretation out of my readings that we are basically Kshatriyas, the warrior class, but we never indulged in a warrior's life
and we did not took to going into a wars. We considered ourselves somewhere in between the Brahmins and the Kshatriyas, if ever there was that classificiation. We are silk
weavers from Rajasthan.

There are various territorial Khatris

Among the Poona, Nasik & Ahmednagar territorial Khatris there is a belief that in order to avoid being slained by Parshurama, Goddess Hinglaj advised to assume the name of
Khatris and take up weaving.

Khatris in Sholapur state, came to Sholapur from Cheul in Konkan. This could be the link for 'Kashikar' surname which has its deity as Tulja Bhavani at Tuljapur near Sholapur. I
am tentatively interpreting them to be Sholapur Khatris as mentioned in the book.

The second para talks about the profession of Khatris being silk weavers and states that the introduction of machine made goods have crippled their silk weaving industry.

There is a mention of 11 groups of Khatris.

(1) Brahma Khatri (2) Gujarati Khatri (3) Istari Khatri (4) Kapur Khatri (5) Karnataka Khatri (6) Kayat Khatri (7) Maratha Khatri (8) Sahasrarjuna Khatri (9) Surti Khatri (10)
Somvanshi Khatri (11) Suryavanshi Khatri

Karnataka Khatris could be the ones with their diety as Chamunda Devi of Chamunda Hills Mysore and the Rajpurkars could be the ones.

Brahma Khatri is an an offshoot of Khatris claiming a higher status among the Khatris and therefore call them Kshatriyas. They claim to their origin been Gujarat. Surnames with
Vasudeo, Bhiwandkar & Mukadam, with their deity being Ashapura of Bhuj and Gotra Vashisth can claim to be Brahma Khatris or the so claimed higher status Kshatriyas.

Khatris from Punjab are also referred as Brahma Khatris. Surnames like Mohandas with deity Jamna Morsa somewhere in Punjab can call themselves Brahma Khatris too.

Looking at the Surnames mentioned for Maratha Khatris on page 207, none of them are on our roll, therefore assuming that we are not Maratha Khatris by origin.

Of the nine Gotras mentioned in the book for khatris, Gautam, Narad, Parashar and Shandilya are not prevailing among our community members. The bulk of us belong to
Vashisth Gotra with surnames Rele, Vasudeo, Bhiwandkar, Dhebri, Rupji, Satghar, Mukadam, Labrath, Vasaikar, Mangle, Mijagiri and Natve.

The page begins with bridegroom's ( Navra Mulga) side taking three to five goats to bride's (navri) house where they are killed and treated to symptious food.
. Dead are burnt while boys and girls who die without the sacred thread are buried. Divorce is allowed and Remarriage of widows is permissible.
Karnataka Khatris (Kashikars ) have their family God as Ganpati & Mahadev and Goddess as Tulja Bhavani and Yellama. They take pilgrimage to Ambabai at Tuljapur in Satara.
Karnataka Khatris ( both Kashikars & Rajpurkars) have the ritual of 'gondhal' dance before the marriage. Gondhal which is the dance of native Bhil tribes of Karnataka, later spread to
Maharashtra and formed an important feature of Amba Bhavani of Tuljapur. Sant Eknath & Tukaram composed excellent songs later to be known as Bharuds. The Gondhalis took the
profession of bharuds and engage in military spies, an indirect form of involving in war; true to KHATRIS.
The Vasudeo's, Bhiwandkar's and Mukadams have their deity as Ashapura, and therefore can be looked as Gujarati Khatris. The book says, many of the Gujarati Khatris in South Gujarat
eat fish and drink liquor to excess, who otherwise are fully vegetarian
Gujarati Khatris worship Devi Hinglaj Mata of Karachi. In Chaul, there is Hinglaj Mata Mandir (on a small hillock) and every year the Bhansali clan celebrate Utsav on Shakhambari
Pornima ( Pornima that follows Datta Jayanti Pornima). The temple is a proof of migration having taken place from Karachi to Chaul.
Devi Hinglaj Mata near Karachi and Ashapura near Bhuj are claimed to be sisters as per the local pujari at the Chaul Temple. From Punjab (1200's) to Karachi (1400's) through Bhuj to
Chaul (1600's) where the Portuguese imported silk, is probably the migration trail of the past 800 years.
.

The Book 'Mumbai che Varnan' by Govind Narayan Mandgavkar printed in 1863, has reference of few of the surnames like Mahimkar and Vasaikar.

The page refer to one Mr.Janardhan Ganesh Mahimkar who wrote a history on Mumbai in 1739 in Marathi. Obiviously, this needs to be verified if any one of
us have the above name in their Family Tree.

Page 20 , mentions why Mahimkar & Vasaikar surnames exist.
