Settle

3D

v. 3.0...

...the beta program in action!

Many of our users participated in the Settle3D 3.0 beta program,
and the release incorporates a number of their suggestions.

This article outlines the additions to Settle3D that came

out of the beta program. Such features include:

Define User Data Option

Shear Strength Contours
Pore Water Pressure with Depth

Similar to Phase2, custom user data can now be defined in Settle3D.

With this feature, you are no longer limited to viewing only the results
listed in the drop-down menu. You can now create contour plots of:
Any stress components
Any settlement components
Any mathematical expression created using the available predefined data or material properties
Once the User Data has been defined, it will appear at the end of the
results drop-down list, and can be selected like any other data type.

Define User Data Equation dialog (left) and active earth pressure (right)

For example, in the figure above, we have defined an equation for the
submerged active earth pressure (where is assumed to equal 0.3):
= +

In embankment design, undrained shear strength is a significant

material property. It is important for embankment stability, both during
construction and in the long term.
As a result of a suggestion made during the beta, you can now look at
the undrained shear strength in Settle3D. In the material properties
dialog, we now also have Undrained Shear Strength input parameters.
You can now specify the parameters A, S, and m in the following
equation:

= +
()

We have also added Undrained Shear Strength to the drop-down list of

results in Settle3D. You can now plot the undrained shear strength
distribution on the field point grid, or along any user-defined query
point, query line, or query plane.

There are now three groundwater analysis options in Settle3D:

Piezometric Lines, Grids, PWP Functions.

With the Pore Water Pressure option, a graph of the pore water
pressure profile is generated as you enter the data.

Defining Pore Water Pressure profile in Settle3D

The recently-added PWP Function option allows you to define and

stage multiple Pore Water Pressure Functions.

Settle3D 3.0 is a major upgrade with a number of

new features, including some that were added as
a result of the beta testing program.
