Organizational behavior is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior
within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organizations effectiveness. This course
focusesonsuchtopicsasleadershipskills,personality,motivation,teambuildingorganizationalchangeandculture.

WorkinginTeams
Studentsfrequentlycomplainabouthavingtoworkongroupassignments.Theprimaryreasonsforthesecomplaintsare(a)often
somememberswill"dragtheirfeet"andforceotherstopickuptheslack,and(b)interpersonalconflictsariseinthegroupcontext.
Althoughthereiscertainlysomemerittothesecomplaints,weinsistonincorporatingthegroupprojectsasasignificantelementin
thecoursebecauseoftwomajorconsiderations.

First,thiscourseisabouthumanbehaviorinorganizationalsettings.Learningabouttheconceptsinthiscourse(asistrueofthe
conceptsinmostanycourse)isfacilitatedbypermittingdirectexperiencewiththem.Thus,byformingminiorganizationsineach
classmeeting,youaregivenagreaterchancetodirectlyexperiencesomeofthethingsyouaretryingtolearnabout.Second,the
vastmajorityofyouwillfindyourselfifyouhaven'talreadydonesoworkingingroupsatsometimeoranother(infact,manyof
youwillspendthemajorityofyourworkinglivesasmembersofagroup).Thereisnochancewhatsoeverthatyouwillavoidslacking
group members and interpersonal conflict after college. Why not face the music and start now to learn how to cope with these
frustratingelementsofgroupwork?
