Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F

Date: 08/09/2016 Time: 10:10-11:10 Year: Year 11 General

Learning Area: English Topic: Introduction to Shawshank Redemption

Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)
Evaluating the impact of description and imagery, including figurative language, and still
moving images in digital and multimodal texts (ACEEN007)
Analysing the ways language features, text structures and stylistic choices shape points of
view and influence audiences (ACEEN024)
Analysing language, structural and stylistic choices (ACEEN041)
Students prior knowledge and experience:
(Outline what the students already know about this topic)
Students know how to annotate film posters/cover but haven't done it for The Shawshank
Redemption

Learning purpose: (May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content description
here)
To explore imagery, looking at analysing pictures, language features and stylistic choices
made by writers. Looking at why writers/directors make decisions and how they portray
different things using pictures, digital and multimedia texts

Learning objectives:
On completion of this lesson, students
will be able to: (What will students know
and be able to do at the completion of the
lesson specific, concise and attainable
objectives)
Students will predict what the movie will be
about and this will link to once they have
finished the movie and will look back as to
why they thought that and after analysing
the movie poster they can get a idea about
the chapters and if they had a idea about the
chapters and the theme of the movie

Evaluation:
(Explain how you will know that lesson
objective have been achieved / monitor
student learning)
I will know the objectives have been achieved
as the students have a sheet with the cover
of the movie they will analyse
I will be monitoring throughout and asking
question making sure they realise why they
designed the cover in that way, why all the
conventions come together to portray the
movie.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment
will be required)
1. I created a sheet for their analysis on the cover
2. I have a powerpoint including the cover and background information on the movie
3. White board and markers
4. Resource from online mentioning the themes in the film

Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource

adjustments)
I will cater for diversity by catering to everyones developmental needs eg, allocating extra
time for things if a student needs more.
Support their learning needs by encouraging other students not to distract and have a clean
and inviting classroom environment

Learning Experiences:
1. Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)
Invite class inside and instruct them to stand behind their desks. Say good
morning, invite them to sit down- do the role
Introduce the topic; today where starting to look at Shawshank Redemption (have
the slides ready)
2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the
students achieve the learning objectives? What tasks and
activities will the students be involved in to help achieve the
learning objectives?)
Start with the first slide looking some facts about the movie (genre, rating,
release date, actors etc)
Look at the cover of the book and answer the questions on the slides (group
discussion)
Hand out their copy of the poster- do a group session with the class annotating
the poster, while I annotate the poster on the board with their suggestions they
can annotate their hard copy
Discuss the meaning behind redemption and how they think redemption relates to
the film.
Next slide; Have the meanings of redemption and the etymology meaning as well
Discuss the meaning behind Shawshank and how they think Shawshank relates to
the film.
Next slide; Have the meaning
Get the students to write their prediction of the movie on the other side of their
sheet to refer back to once they have watched the movie.
Watch the movie trailer (2:20minutes)
After watching the trailer have a group discussion looking at whether they think
their predictions are on track
Discuss the themes they think will be in the film after watching the trailer, how
can they justify them? what makes you think they will appear on the film?
Next slide; have some themes from the movie and look at them in comparison to
the poster; can you recognise these themes just by looking at the poster or will
you have to watch the movie in full first?
1. Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and
relate it to the lesson objectives?)
Collect their predictions and annotations, after they have watched the movie they
can look back and see if their predictions were correct.

End of class

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)
I found it hard in this session to get the students engaged and interested in the session. The
students had to watch a movie for an upcoming assignment but didnt want to watch The
Shawshank Redemption which was already chosen for them, so having them already say
they didnt want to do it made it hard for me to teach when they didnt really want to get
involved in the session. As there were only 11 boys in the group I prompted them to sit in the
first two rows in the class so that it was a better sharing environment. After moving the boys
they did share more but I think they just wanted to watch the movie instead of doing the
introductory into the topic. I prompted the students by using cues and questioning them to
get them to involved. I did stop the lesson and gave them a little pep talk about getting
involved and the more you share the more youre going to get out of the session to get them
to share and so they would achieve the learning objectives which helped a lot. The
powerpoint helped me stay on track and also helped when the students came up and did
their annotating as the picture was there for them to annotate then they could copy it down
onto their sheet. I couldnt really change the lesson as the plan I feel would have worked if
the students got more engaged and had a better attitude towards the movie/the session. I
did have to change the session when it came to annotating on the board as the students
didnt want to move from their seats so I just took call outs and wrote them up, I feel that
would also work in future lessons.
