INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS HOLOLENS?
Microsoft HoloLens is the first fully selfcontained holographic computer running
Windows 10. It is completely selfcontainedno wires, phones, or connection to a PC
needed. Microsoft HoloLens allows you to place holograms in your physical
environment and provides a new way to see your world.

HOW DOES THE HOLOGRAM WORK?

The HoloLens comes with semitransparent holographic lenses which 'generate multidimensional full-colour holograms'. That means it's not going to be projecting images
into a room that everyone can see. It's cutting edge stuff, but it's not quite that advanced
yet.
In much the same way as Google's ill-fated Glass experiment, the HoloLens will interject
virtual elements onto your vision. That means it's different to virtual reality headsets
such as the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Playstation VR. These VR headsets immerse
you in a fully simulated world, whereas the HoloLens uses the real world as a canvas on
which to overlay virtual elements.
Microsoft explains the holographic element in this way: "The key to a great holographic
experience is holograms that are light point rich, i.e. have a high holographic density,
and are pinned or anchored to the world around you. To achieve this, HoloLens has
been designed for optimal holographic density of 2.5K radiants. The more radiants and
light points there are, the brighter and richer the holograms become."

Unlike Google Glass then, Microsoft's AR headset will create virtual 3D models that,
thanks to the HoloLens' various cameras and sensors, interact with the environment
you're in. The in-built speakers that sit above your ears create sound based upon where
each hologram is in relation to your position, making for an even more immersive
experience.

Why would I want holograms in my real world?

Weve made incredible advances as an industry in the ways we interact with computers.
However, we are still constrained because we must conform to the ways computers recognize
our commands through a keyboard or by touching a screen. Using holograms, you can place
your digital content, such as apps, information, and even multidimensional videos, in the
physical space around you, so you can interact with it in the same ways that you interact with
physical objects.

How can I see holograms mixed with my real world with

Microsoft HoloLens?
Microsoft HoloLens generates a multidimensional image visible to a user so that he or she
perceives holographic objects in the physical world. Holographic objects seen with Microsoft
HoloLens can be placed in physical locations you choose, move according to their own rules, or
remain in a specific location regardless of where you are or in which direction you are looking.

How to interact with holograms using Microsoft HoloLens?

The holograms youll see with Microsoft HoloLens can appear lifelike, and can move, be
shaped, and change according to interaction with you or the physical environment in which they
are visible. Use gestures to create, shape, and size holograms. Use your gaze to navigate and
explore. Use your voice to communicate with your apps. Microsoft HoloLens understands your
movements, gaze, and voice, enabling you to interact with content and information naturally.

dimensional videos, in the physical space around you, so you can interact with it.

WHAT WILL YOU BE ABLE TO DO WITH HOLOLENS?

From the sounds of it, quite a lot. Among the most interesting, HoloLens will be able to
let you view and interact with work projects such as assembling 3D models, play games
like Minecraft, video chat with hologram versions of Skype contacts, and even watch
live content.
An on-stage demonstration further emphasised the ability to create 3D objects, from
assembling to choosing the colours, all using simple gestures that looks very Intel
RealSense.
One of the most fascinating uses, at least for the folks at NASA, which collaborated with
Microsoft in the making of HoloLens, is the potential to control the Mars rover Curiosity
via the HoloLens. The headset will give NASA staff the ability to plant virtual flags in the
terrain and work as if they're actually on the planet themselves.
Microsoft is also partnering with other companies to use HoloLens in practical ways.
Volvo is expected to bring the technology to its car showrooms where customers will be
able to view different colour options for their chosen car and see safety features in
action. The car maker is also expected to integrate HoloLens tech into its autonomous
vehicle projects, although it remains unclear how.
But what about gaming with HoloLens? Well Microsoft is doing that as well and the first
example of what it's calling mixed reality gaming was demonstrated at Microsoft's E3
2015 press conference.

Build quality and comfort

HoloLens is essentially comprised of two rings: a thicker, plastic outer one that contains
the guts and a slimmer, cushioned inner one that wraps your head. The inner ring's fit
adjusts by sliding forward and backward a roller residing on its back.

Controlling and touching holograms

The HoloLens gaze controls are responsive and should be easy for any user to get the
hang of almost immediately..
Using gestures, you could select the Project Origami diagram, use your gaze to move it
around the room, and then use another pinch to lock the hologram into a new spot (I
moved it from in front of me to a couch to a coffee tablet to a desk.).
The HoloLens uses spatial audio, which takes the experience to a whole new level.
Ambient music played during the demo, and the spheres rolled to the the sound of
crumpling paper.

Holographic viewing
To give the holograms (which turned into a game) functions, add controls (gaze, gesture
and voice), spatial sound, spatial mapping and the ability to pick up, move and place the
holograms around the room. The HoloLens images projected onto the real world are
vibrant, sharp and realistic.

Price
The Development Edition costs $3,000 (approximately 2,320).

TARGET MARKET

Who will benefit most from Microsoft HoloLens?

We are excited about the possibilities that Microsoft HoloLens will enable. We believe
developers, commercial organizations, designers, and creators will find unique value in
Microsoft HoloLens. For developers, Windows 10 on Microsoft HoloLens is the premier
holographic platform that enables you to help develop the future of holographic computing.
Built on Windows 10, Microsoft HoloLens will be a revolutionary tool for businesses
transforming how companies, designers, and creators work with threedimensional data to bring

products and information to life. This is just the beginning. While our current focus is growing the
ecosystem through the efforts of pioneering developers and commercial partners, we are also
committed to releasing HoloLens to consumers in the next few years.
