PROBLEMS ON COINS
Ex-1: Ravali has an amount of Rs.20 in coins of denominations of 50 paise and Re.1. If she has
a total of 30 coins with her, how many Re. 1 coins does she have?

Sol:
Let the number of 50 np coins with Ravali be x.
Number of Re. 1 coins with her will be (30 -x)
Amount = x. 50 + (30 - x).100 = 2000 (paise)
50x + 3000 100x = 2000
50x = 1000 x = 20
Number of Re.1 coins with her is (30 - 20) = 10.

Choice (2)

You can solve this problem by observation.

Ex-2: In a bag, there are equal number of 25 paise and one rupee coins. If the total amount in
the form of 25 paise and one rupee coins is Rs. 35, how many coins are there in the bag?
(1) 20
(2) 48
(3) 42 (4) 56

Sol:
Let the number of 25np and one rupee coins be x each.
Amount = 25.x + 100.x = 3500 (paise)
25 (x + 4x) = 3500
125x = 3500
x = 28
Total number of coins = 56.

Ex-3: Rekha has Rs. 2,750 in her purse in denomination of hundred and fifty. She has 32 notes
in all counting both hundred and fifty. How many hundred rupee notes does she have in her
purse?

w
w

Sol:
Mathematical Process
Let the number of hundred rupee notes be x and the number of fifty rupee notes be y.
(i)
Given, x + y = 32
Amount = 100x + 50 y = 2750
(ii)
2x + y = 55
x+ (x + y) = 55
x + (32) = 55 [from (i)]
x = 23
The number of hundred rupee notes is 23.

Quantitative Thought
If all the notes were fifties then we would have total amount Rs. 1600. But the
total amount is Rs. 2,750 (given) which is Rs. 1150 (2750 1600= 1150) more which can be
achieved by replacing 23 fifty notes with hundred notes.

Ex-5: Prudhvi has only 25 paise and 50 paise coins with him. The total amount in 50 paise
denomination is Rs. 4 more than the total amount in 25 paise denomination. The number of 25
paise coins is 20 more than the number of 50 paise coins. What is the total amount with prudhvi?
(1) Rs. 32

(2) Rs. 36

(3) Rs. 40
