In many environments, both the web and application services can be installed

Clustered web and application servers

Multiple servers can be clustered to provide greater performance on both

the web and application services tier. For each tier, it is recommended that
the clustered servers have similar specifications.
For environments that expect heavy scheduled task loads, the top priority
should be increasing the number of servers of the application server tier.
For environments that expect a large number of web users, Business Objects
recommends clustered web servers that manage load-balancing using
Microsoft Application Center. At least two clustered application servers are
also recommended to support a large web user community.
