REF601 / REJ601

Optimized solution for Protection and

Control of Distribution Substations
REF601/REJ601 is a dedicated feeder protection and
control relay intended for the protection and control
of utility and industrial power systems, in primary and
secondary distribution networks.
REF601/REJ601 is a member of ABBs Relion protection
and control product family and its 605 series. The
relay provides an optimized composition of protection,
monitoring and control functionality in one unit, with the
best performance usability in its class.
The compact size of REF601 makes it suitable for even
mounting on ABB circuit breakers VD4 and HD4.
Application
REF601/REJ601 provides main protection for overhead lines
and cable feeders of distribution and subdistribution networks.
Further, inrush current stabilisation function allows the relay to
be used as main protection of distribution transformers. The
pre-configured functionality of relay facilitates easy and fast
commissioning of the switchgear.
Protection and control
The relay provides 3 phase overcurrent and earth-fault protection functions. The relay can measure earth current using
external core balance current transformer or can be calculated
internally. The low-set stages of overcurrent and earth fault
protection are equipped with selectable definite time (DT) and
Inverse definite minimum time (IDMT) characteristics. The relay
features standard IDMT characteristics - Normal Inverse, Very
Inverse, Extremely Inverse, Long-time inverse and special
inverse characteristic RI for better co-ordination with rest of
the network protection.
The REF601 relay integrates basic control functionality. Apart
from display of data and parameter settings, the user friendly
Local Human-Machine Interface (LHMI) supports control of
one circuit breaker with dedicated control push buttons.
To protect the relay from unauthorized access and to maintain
the integrity of information, the relay is armed with three level,
role-based user authentication system with individual password for the operator, engineer and administrator level.
Easy to use
Six dedicated LEDs indicate the status of relay and protection
functions while the LCD presents online measurements, settings, events and recorded data allowing them to be rapidly
analyzed and dealt with.

The pre-configured functionality of the relay minimize the engineering effort for adaptation in variety of applications. A single
wide range auxiliary supply eliminates the ordering variants of
power supply thus minimizing the risk of inventory or damage.
The relay also boasts a press-fit design for effortless installations on panels. The relay has configurable inputs and outputs
which can be easily altered by LHMI.
Supervision
To ensure continuous availability of protection the relay features extensive self-supervision of the relay hardware and software. The relay also includes an integrated trip-circuit supervision function monitoring the external trip signal path.
The relay supports a built-in test mode which enables user to
test the relay HMI, protection functions and binary outputs.
The relay has capacity of storing 100 events with associated
time stamps with resolution of 1 milli second.
The relay stores fault records of analog values for last five trip
events. Each fault record includes the current values for three
phases and earth current of five different instances along with
time stamp. The non-volatile memory of relay retains events /
fault data in case the relay temporarily loses its auxiliary supply.
The optional communication features extends local monitoring
and control facility of HMI to remote automation systems over
MODBUS RTU protocol.
Compact and flexible
The REF601 relay has alternate to conventional current transformer a sensor variant with one conventional residual current
and three sensor inputs for connection to matching sensor
types KECA and KEVCR. The sensor helps to obtain equipment size reduction, performance improvement and better
standardization in compact MV switchgear.
Compact and flexible
REF601/REJ601 has a small mounting depth and is free of
any loose mounting accessories. The form factor of the relay is
particularly suited for mounting on the circuit breaker VD4 and
HD4 while press-fit mounting feature of relay makes it suitable
for quick and easy installation on switchgear panels. The relay
also forms a part of ABBs offering of integrated apparatus.
