Artist in Residency Program at North Dakota

State Parks
INTRODUCTION

North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the expansion of the
Artist in Residency program within North Dakota State Parks. The Artist in Residency Program is
a partnership with North Dakota Council of the Arts to provide local Artists the opportunity to
show case their craft and talent. In 2010, the Artist in Residency Program will involve three
artists, each at a different state park and will last for one week. The events will all take place
between July 15 and August 30, 2010 as a collaborative effort to incorporate arts into the
interpretive and educational activities presented by North Dakota Parks and Recreation
interpretive services. The program will recruit writers, composers, visual and performing artists
to experience North Dakota's natural resources and allow them to express their experience
through their art. We recognize that Artists have played an important role in the history of North
Dakota’s State Parks and have helped define the value of protecting our natural resources. It is
our aim that the art generated through this experience will allow the public to become stewards,
with a deeper appreciation of artistic works inspired by North Dakota’s landscape and natural
features. Through this Artist in Residency program, three artists would be invited to stay one
week in one of the following parks: Icelandic State Park, Lewis and Clark State Park and Cross
Ranch State Park.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

Artists are an important part of the history of the North Dakota State Park system. Varieties of
works in various forms have created permanent park records and have helped preserve state
parks.

The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department’s program offers artists the opportunity to
live and work in this unique environment for a period of one week. The works completed under
this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of North Dakota’s
natural, historical and cultural diversity. It is hoped that these works will characterize the state’s
beauty for present and future generations, giving park visitors and the general public an
opportunity to see North Dakota through the eyes and ears of contributing artists.

A State Park Residency is for serious professionals who wish to work alone and unfettered in the
challenge and beauty of these woodlands, prairies, riparian’s and wetlands. It is for those who
deeply care about the environment and wish to contribute to it as well as benefit from it. This
program does provide a stipend of $1,200.00, received upon the completion of the residency
program.

EXPECTATIONS

In return, the parks ask each artist to donate a piece of art, representative of their style and
reflecting their residency, to the park for the park collection, granting the park the right to
reproduce the work for its use. Similarly, the park would require one-time publication rights to a
portion of a literary work produced during a residency. Each resident must be willing to provide
onsite demonstrations and/or workshop to interact with interested park visitors and staff during
the residency. These interactions may take the form of slide lectures, exhibitions or “art walks”
armed with cameras or sketchbooks, or even workshops.

SELECTION PROCESS
A committee assembled of park employees and administrative staff, will review applications and
materials submitted. Selections will be made on the basis of merit and how a candidate’s work
can advance the mission of North Dakota State Parks as well as enhance the growth of the
artist’s work. Selections will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, disability, marital
status, age or national origin.
