Chains

XATP 5

XATC 5

Description
The conveyor chain consists of plastic links joined
together by means of plastic pivots and stainless
steel pins. It can be delivered with or without cleats.
The chain is also available with composite chain links
based on the standard link design, combined with a
special chain top. The basic link has the same
technical properties as the standard link.
Plain chain
The plain chain has a flat top surface. The surface
has low friction, which allows accumulation of
products.
Crescent chain
The crescent conveyor chain top is designed with
minimum gap between links.
Universal chain
The universal chain has provisions for application of
custom chain tops in applications where the standard
chain cannot be used.

XA Height of chain above beam

Cleated chain
A cleated chain is required for vertical or steeply
inclined conveyor tracks. Cleats are available in
different heights and shapes. The cleat type must be
selected to suit the shape of the goods conveyed.
Friction top chain
The friction top chain is especially suitable for track
configurations with inclines up to 30, and where a
standard cleated chain is unsuitable. A friction insert
molded into the link increases the friction between
goods and chain.
Always test with the specific product to ensure that
the friction is sufficient at the desired inclination.
Steel top chain
The steel top chain replaces the standard chain if the
products conveyed are causing excessive wear to
the standard chain. It is intended primarily for the
mechanical manufacturing industry, for transport of
castings or machined items with sharp edges.
Based on the standard chain link, the steel top chain
has the same technical properties as the standard
link.

Roller top chain

Roller top chain XATR 5 is especially suitable for
sensitive goods in buffering areas, and for long
buffer sections where the accumulating pressure
could become high with the standard chain. The
rollers on the chain top reduce the friction between
the chain and the goods, so that scratch-sensitive
goods can be conveyed without being damaged.
Important: Note that roller top links of this type cannot
be interleaved with plain links or other fingered links
if the conveyor includes horizontal bends.
Roller cleats
Two other types of roller top chain are also available:
XATF 5x23 R... and XATF 5x46 R... Those chain
types are cleated chains with roller-type cleats for
use in inclines. Type XATF 5x46 R... requires minimum
one plain link between every cleated link.
Flexible cleat chain
The flexible cleat chain is intended for high speed
vertical transport in vertical wedge conveyors.
Suitable products include glass and plastic bottles,
soda cans, and cardboard boxes. Two conveyors
with flexible cleat chain facing each other form the
vertical wedge conveyor. Refer to drawings and
specifications on WXX 67 and WXX 68.
Three types of flexible cleats are available.
XATE 5 B: utilizes flexible fingers which are
moulded into the top of the link. This type is best
used in situations where the product being
transported weighs more than 2.20 lb, with
products that are not susceptible to surface
scratching, and with small, irregularly shapped
products.
XATE 5 C: chain links consist of two parts that can
be separated. The flexible material which contacts
the product can be removed or replaced if
necessary. The top section slides into the base link
and snaps into place. This chain is designated for
products weighing less than 2.20 lb wich are
sensitive to surface scratching.
XATE 5 D: has flexible rubber cleats wich can be
removed from the chain and replaced if necessary.
The chain is best used with heavier product or
where the gap between cleats must be small.
Other chain types
In addition to the standard types, several specialpurpose chain links are available on special order.
Please contact us for additional information.

Chain assembly tool

A special pin insertion tool is available for use when
assembling and dismantling the chain. The tool helps
when inserting and removing the stainless steel pin
joining two chain links together.

XCC

Chain lubrication
The chain is lubrication-free. A new chain running on
new slide rails, however, will need a few hours of
running in before it runs perfectly smoothly. For
applications where absolutely smooth running is
essential from the start, a silicone-based lubricant
(XASS 450) is available.

Ordering information
The chain comes in 16.4 ft. sections. Separate links
can also be ordered. Plastic pivots and stainless steel
pins are included with chain and link deliveries, so
they need only be ordered for replacement purposes.
Calculate the required length of chain. For effective
track lengths of bends, drive units etc., refer to the
table Effective track lengths in the technical
reference section (page APX 8-10). Be sure to use
the value for a two-way chain if the chain returns
on the bottom of the beam. The chain must be
ordered in multiples of 16.4 ft.

If cleats are required: determine the type and

distance between them. The distance should be at
least 1.5 times the length of the product conveyed.
The desired distance is denoted by adding a digit
after the designation suffix; if, for instance, every
fifth link there is to be a Type A cleat link, then write
A5; if every eighth, then write A8, etc.
Example: XATF 5x30 A8 is a 16.4 ft. chain section.
It has type A cleats, 1-3/16, on every eighth link.

Description

Technical specifications

XA/XE Conveyor beam

The conveyor beam is the base of the system. All
other components will be attached to it to build a
complete conveyor. The inside of the beam works as
the return track for the conveyor chain. It is delivered
in straight 8ft long sections, intermediate lengths can
be cut as required.

Component specifications are subject to change

without prior notification.

XA/XE Connecting saddle

Used to connect two beams or components together.
It provides two pilot holes, which can be used to fix
the joint with a bolt.
XA Raised chain assembly bracket
Used to support the top chain track over the
conveyor beam, allowing an open area between the
top and bottom sections of the conveyor. The raised
chain assembly bracket is clamped to the conveyor
beam, so that no drilling or welding is required. It is
also used to support other components, such as the
guide rail brackets.
XA Stainless steel top slide rail support
Provides the continuous surface on which the top
slide rail is mounted. They are installed on the
conveyor on the slots on top of the raised chain
assembly bracket. Available in 8 ft. long straight
sections; intermediate lengths can be cut as required.
XA Top slide rail
UHMW-PE is used over the stainless steel top slide
rail support to provide a low friction rail for the
conveyor chain. Available in 10ft. long straight
sections; intermediate lengths can be cut as required.
XA/XE Slide rail
A plastic slide rail is used to provide a low friction
track for the chain. This type of slide rail is suited for
high-speed applications (>131 ft/min), high accumulation loads, or where cleanliness is important.
Plastic screws (10-32) are used to fix the slide rail to
the beam.

Material specifications
Refer to the component materials table on the
technical reference section (page APX 11-12).

Tools and accessories

XA/XE Non-metallic conveyor beam section
Provides a metal free area, to be used whenever a
metal detector is integrated to the conveyor.
Special tools are available for installation of the slide
rail. See the assembly manual where installation of
the slide rail is described.

Ordering information
Determine the number of beams required.
Determine the length of slide rail required. Two
lengths of slide rail are required for each length of
XA track. Four lengths of slide rail are required for
each length of XE track. Use the Effective track
length table on the technical reference section to
calculate the XA stainless steel top slide rail
support and top slide rail required for bends and
drives (page APX 8-10).
Estimate the required number of plastic screws
(10-32) for the slide rail. Two screws are required
for each separate piece of slide rail. The screws
must be ordered separately.
Determine the number of connecting saddles
required: one (1) for each joint between straight
beam sections, two (2) for joints between curves
and straight beam sections. Drive and idler units
already provide the connecting saddle.
Determine the amount of XA raised chain assembly
brackets required. Remember not to exceed 16
between them.
The mounting hardware is included with every XA
raised chain assembly bracket.
Determine the length of XA stainless steel top slide
rail support and top slide rail required for the
conveyor. Two lengths of each one are required
for each XA beam length. Use the Effective track
length table on the technical reference section to
calculate the XA stainless steel top slide rail
support and top slide rail required for bends and
drives (page APX 8-10).

Description
XA/XE End Drive
Designed to be positioned at one end of the conveyor. A gear reducer and motor drives the conveyor
chain directly or by means of a roller chain transmission system with an adjustable slip clutch (refer to
the assembly manual for clutch adjustment instructions).
Four drive configurations are available: suspended
motor and direct drive with transmission on left or
right side. The drive configuration can be easily
inverted, using the same components.
Direct end drive option and Chain end drive option are
available for the XE model only.
The drive unit can be connected parallel with
additional drive units, so a common motor can drive
several conveyors together. This requires a longer
drive shaft and a modified bearing arrangement,
available upon request.
XA Catenary Drive
Used in conveyors where chain return on the bottom
of the conveyor beam is not suitable or required. A
gear reducer and motor drives the conveyor chain
by means of a roller chain transmission system with
an adjustable slip clutch (refer to the assembly
manual for clutch adjustment instructions).
Two drive configurations are available: suspended
motor, transmission on left or right side. The drive
configuration can be easily inverted, using the same
components.
The drive unit can be connected parallel with
additional drive units, so a common motor can drive
several conveyors together. This requires a longer
drive shaft and a modified bearing arrangement,
available upon request.
As with the end drive, you must use a gear reducer
mounting kit.

Description

Material specifications

Used to provide a horizontal change of direction in

the conveyor with a minimum amount of friction. The
wheel bend is designed to guide the chain in the
return track as well as the top track. Each wheel is
supported by two sealed deep groove ball bearings
for long life and a minimum amount of friction. The
wheel bend is available in four different versions:
180, 90, 45 and 30.
The length of some products does not allow the use
of, for example, a 90 wheel bend. In such cases,
the change of direction can be distributed between
two 45 or three 30 wheel bends.

Refer to the component materials table on the

technical reference section (page APX 11-12).

Technical specifications
Component specifications are subject to change
without prior notification.

Ordering information
When calculating the required amount of slide rail,
refer to the slide rail requirement table. Refer to the
XA\XE effective track length table on the technical
reference section (page APX 8-10).
Connecting saddles are not included with any
horizontal wheel bend. Two (2) connecting
saddles per horizontal wheel bend are required
(refer to page XAE 9).

Guide rail components Guide rails

Description

Material specifications

Guide rails are used to guide the products being

conveyed, and to prevent them from falling off the
conveyor. The XA/XE conveyor system includes a
versatile system of guide rails and guide rail brackets
which make it possible to accommodate many
different product sizes and shapes. If your product
requires special guide rails, contact us.
The guide rail is made of solid UHMW-PE to provide a
sanitary surface without crevices. A 14-gage
stainless steel sheath provides rigid streamlined
support for heavy loads at any speed, plus a solid
connecting point for holding the rail in place with
clamps and brackets.
The UHMW-PE guiding surface is available in different
shapes. The very low friction characteristics of
UHMW-PE allow products to move at high speeds
with minimum drag, container damage, and noise.

Refer to the component materials table on the

technical reference section (page APX 11-12).

Technical specifications
For optional guide rails contact factory.
Component specifications are subject to change
without prior notification.

Description

Ordering information

The XA/XE guide rails are supported by brackets,

which are attached to the conveyor using the
raised chain assembly bracket as a base. Simply
remove the bolt supplied with the raised chain
assembly bracket and re-use it to attach the guide
rail bracket base to the raised chain assembly
bracket.
There are five different types of brackets
available.
For guide rail bracket adjustment, refer to the
drawings on the following pages. If your product
requires special guide rail brackets, contact us.

The distance between guide rail brackets depends

on the side forces to be expected, the guide rail
type and the container material. In buffer conveyors with side forces, much shorter distances
between brackets are required than in nonbuffering applications. The distance between
guide rail brackets should be minimum 16 and
maximum 32.
Bracket assemblies are sold individually, not in
pairs.
Mounting hardware included.
