Why technical nonwovens

Around 3.52 million tons of technical nonwovens were

consumed in 2010. That is 25% more than for disposable
nonwovens. The market is growing rapidly with over 9% per year.
While the use of nonwoven geotextiles and roofing substrates
in construction is well established in North America and Europe,
the increasing demand for these materials in emerging countries is generating tremendous opportunities for manufacturers.

Competence in PET, PP and Bico

One base, many possibilities

Oerlikon Neumags modular line concept
High throughputs

Homogenous web characteristics

Oerlikon Neumag spunbond technology enables significantly

higher throughputs than achievable with other standard
systems available on the market.

For optimal spinning, the polymer must be distributed in the

spinning beam under very uniform conditions. With Oerlikon
Neumags segmented distribution system, a uniform residence
time and heat transfer is achieved for the polymer across the
beam and spinneret. As a result of the excellent polymer
distribution, the Oerlikon Neumag spunbond technology
achieves homogenous web characteristics. To this end,
consistent tenacity and elongation values in both cross and
machine direction are achievable.

Production capacities range all the way up to 300 kg/(h*m) for

polyester from both virgin and recycled polyester and up to
240 kg/(h*m) for polypropylene.
The intrinsic viscosity range for polyester spunbonds lies between 0.6 and 0.8, while the melt flow rate (MFR) for polypropylenes can extend down to a lower value of 12.

Outstanding flexibility in
polymer use

Bicomponent capability

Oerlikon Neumag spunbond technology is designed for a wide

variety of melt-spinnable polymers such as PET, PP, PE, PA,
PLA and PPS.

Oerlikon Neumag spunbond lines can be optionally equipped

with bicomponent technology which has been installed in a
number of commercial lines.
The unique Oerlikon Neumag bicomponent system allows:
Sheath content as low as 5 per cent
Decreased costs per unit with cost-efficient polymer,
e.g. recycled polymer in the core
A wide range of polymer combinations, polymer ratios
and viscosities
Adding value by utilizing different core and sheath
properties e. g. elasticity

Furthermore, this segmented construction allows the design

of customized system widths.

Low energy consumption

As a result of the optimization of the draw slot and a
process parameter optimization, the energy consumption
for compressed air has been reduced compared to previous
solutions.

Low waste rate

Due to the high system up-time with planned maintenance
intervals and the possibility of recycling the majority of the
waste, the non-recycled trim waste is less than 1 percent.

Competence in R&D
Our extensive R&D laboratory is equipped with the latest
generation of technologies for technical nonwovens, enabling
us to carry out extensive improvements and developments
for new processes, components and machines, in addition to
trials with our customers, or on their behalf.
As a down sized version of a full production plant, the fabric
properties resulting from trials on our pilot plant can be precisely reproduced on production scale.

Competence in engineering
Competence in PET, PP and Bico

Roofing underlayment

With more than 100 systems for PET, PP and bicomponent

staple fibers installed worldwide with production capacities
in excess of 4.3 mio tons/year Oerlikon Neumag is able to
draw on comprehensive and tried-and-tested know-how
in the processing of polyester and polypropylene. This
expertise is deployed for the benefit of our customers in
the production of technical nonwovens.

Bitumen roofing

We have more than 50 years of experience in machine and
