Libraries Transform

READING is an integral part of a childs

education and parents play an important role
in encouraging their children in this aspect.
This importance was highlighted during
the National Library Week celebrations this
year from September 5-9 with the theme,
Libraries Transform.
The Minister for Education, Dr Mahendra
Reddy while officiating the opening of the
week long celebrations in the Northern
Division saidthat libraries transform students
life and it also helps elevate human life.
Libraries, since the birth of education,
through ancient times, have continued to
enlighten humans and today, it holds the pole
position as a centre of information, knowledge
and discovery, he said.
All schools around the country participated
by celebrating the event in their school

through events like character parades, poster

competitions, poems and speech to refresh
the students on the importance of reading and
libraries.
In this era of technological advancements
libraries have taken a back stage so these
activities and programs are important to instill
the value of reading in students.
Some of the schools started off the
celebrations with an opening march but the
character parade remains the most popular and
exciting event for the students every year.
Most schools also encouraged students to
use recycle material for their costumes and
students and parents did rise up to the challenge
with unique creations.
Story book and cartoon characters remains
the favorite for most students during character
parades as was evident from the array of
costumes during the week.

Students celebrate cultural diversity

Zareena Bi
IN a surprisingly positive move the Ministry
of Education dedicated September 14 as
the National Cultural Day with the theme
Celebrating Fijis Cultural Diversity.
The Ministry encouraged schools all over
the country to organize programs so students
could capitalize on the opportunity of learning
each others language, cultural beliefs,
traditions, practices and customs with the
thought that cultural diversity enhances peace

and harmony.
Most schools welcomed this opportunity
to focus on Fijis multicultural society and the
chance to instilland exchange cultural values
in their students.
Like most schools around the country
Lautoka Andhra Sangam primary school
also embraced this idea whole heartedly
and the students indulged in activities like
costume displays, dramatization of traditional
iTaukeiyaqona ceremony, display of food and
traditional cultural artifacts and dance items

with the highlight being the South Indian

Thirikuttu dance.
According to the Head Teacher Vijay
Kumar Singh the chief guest for the function
was the school President Mr. Emmanuel Sami
and the day was well spent.
This is the first year that such a day has
been devoted by the Ministry for cross cultural
events to aid in learning, appreciating and
accommodating others cultures, considering the
fact that there is a diverse ethnic composition
of most schools in Fiji.

Teaching the different cultural contexts

around us to the future leaders of Fiji will not
only help to create an identity but also work
on bridging gaps between the various ethnic
groups by binding people in a bond of unity
and love.
It is important to teach our young the
importance of showing respect to elders,
parents and teachers.

Call Help Line 1325 for Care

IN January this year, it was reported that a person
now attempts suicide every 36 hours in Fiji.
Figures released by Police showed that 620
people committed suicide in the last five-years while
579 people were reported for attempted suicides.
This is an alarming statistics indeed.
Beginning last year, the Fiji Government introduced
the suicide awareness programme in schools
throughout Fiji in the month of September.
The theme for this year was Connect,
Communicate and Care.

25, 2016

NEWS

Permanent secretary for Education, Heritage

and Arts IowaneTiko revealed that the focus for the
activities in school was to understand that everyone
goes through problems and stress in life but they
are to be encouraged to connect with someone and
communicate their problems as there are people who
can help and can care.
The Ministry noted that young people continue
to take their lives prematurely and efforts should be
taken to prevent the problem.
It has also been noted that not many people want
to talk about their problems.
Suicide in Fiji has become so common that
it has jumped to the third leading cause of death
among youths (under 16) and those aged between 17
and 25-years.
The World Health Organization estimates that

over 800,000 people die by suicide each year

thats one person every 40 seconds. Up to 25 times
as many again make a suicide attempt.
We should all do our best to be able to recognize
sadness, depression, illness, abuse or stress in youth
or children who are close to us. However, sometimes,
we cannot see the symptoms of depression so easily.
That is why, its important to talk and listen to your
children, friends and loved ones. If you see sadness,
neglect, mental illness or any form of abuse, then
share your concerns with specialists.
Open communication is vital if we are to combat
suicide. We need to discuss suicide as we would any
other public health issue if we are to dispel myths
about it and reduce the stigma surrounding it.
All the connecting and communicating in the
world will have no effect without the final ingredient

care. We need to make sure that clinicians and

other service providers care enough about it to make
suicide prevention their core business. And we need
to make sure that communities care enough about it
to be able to identify and support those who may be
at heightened risk.

World Literacy Day 2016

Zareena Bi

FIFTY years ago, the United Nations

Educational,
Scientific
and
Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) officially proclaimed
September 8 as International Literacy Day to
actively mobilize the international community
and to promote literacy as an instrument
to empower individuals, communities and
societies.
International Literacy Day 2016 under the
theme Reading the past, writing the future
recognizes the past five decades of national and
international engagement, marking significant

progress toward increased literacy rates around

the world. It also addresses current challenges
and looks to innovative solutions to further
boost literacy in the future.
Consequently, Soroptimist International
Lautoka club marked this day by advocating
on the avenues of literacy at Lomolomo Public
school where students were encouraged to read
and upgrade their English language skills.
The club presented about 70 story books
to the students and teachers through their
literacy program and advised students to read
and submit summaries whereby the five best
summaries will receive awards before the end

of third term of school.

According to SI Lautoka President Ranjini
Sanjay the club ran a similar program last year
at Lautoka Sanatan Primary which turned
out to be successful as a number of students
submitted their summaries.
Our goal was achieved as our main aim
was to get the students to read and the students
were very creative with their submissions.
Last year we rewarded three students with
shopping vouchers for school stationery but
this year we will be increasing the number and
rewarding five students.
We will be working together with the

school to ensure that we receive the maximum

number of entries from Lomolomo Public and
we hope to continue this program in other
schools in future.
Meanwhile, according to UNESCO, about
774 million adults lack the minimum literacy
skills. One in five adults is still not literate
and two-thirds of them are women. About 75
million children are out-of-school and many
more attend irregularly or drop out.
However, literacy is also a cause for
celebration because there are nearly four billion
literate people in the world today.

Faith is important

PEOPLE of faith are important in a free society,
a free society like we now have in Fiji.
These sentiments were echoed by Prime
Minister Rear Admiral Voreqe Bainimarama
during the culmination of Ganesh Utsav at my
Suva Park on September 15.
People of faith give a voice to morality
and ethics.
They demand good government, justice
and social responsibility.
When people of all faiths come together in

tolerance and understandingwhen they love and

respect each other and work for the common
goodthenpeace, justice and prosperity will
flourish.
Speaking at the function organized by Fiji
Sevashram Sangha and attended by around
2,000 devotees the Prime Minister stressed the
need for respect for all religious traditions.
I was always taught to remember that there
is a power that exists higher than me. In my
work as Prime Minister, it is my faith in God
that guides me in serving the Fijian people.
It is my faith that shows me right from

wrong. And it is that same faith that has given
me a deep respect for people of other religious
traditions and has driven me to understand and
value the ways they worship.
Ganesh Utsav is the celebrations of the birth
anniversary of Lord Ganesh and is considered
one of the most sacred religious activities on
the Hindu calendar as it pays homage to Lord
Ganesh, the deity Hindus regard as the remover
of obstacles.

Prayers and rituals marking the occasion
starts 11 days in advance, with devotees
abstaining from meat and alcohol during this

period.
Ganesh Utsav is celebrated widely by
Hindus, particularly at their homes or in public
and at the end of the festival, clay idols of
Ganesh are immersed in deep water, which
disintegrates over time.
This years nationwide celebrations was
at 55 venues around the country inclusive of
schools and temples.
Meanwhile, this years celebrations has
gone viral on the social media with national
and international appreciation pouring in due to
the Prime Ministers presence at the function.

Connect, communicate, care

Students of Gurukul Primary School in a march while marking the Suicide

awareness day at the school.

Sanjay Goundar
TO combat the escalating incidence of suicide
better connection, communication and care of
potential victims is pivotal.
This was extensively elaborated in the
National Suicide Prevention Day theme
Connect, Communicate, Care this year.
Speaking at the event organized at Gurukul
Primary School in Soroptimist International
South West Pacific Assistant Programs
Director and SI Lautoka Treasurer Zareena Bi
pointed out that open communication is vital
if we are to combat suicide.
She stressed that we need to discuss
suicide as any other public health issue if we
are to dispel myths about it and reduce the
stigma surrounding it as normally in many
communities, suicide is shrouded in silence or
spoken of only in hushed tones.
Equipping people to communicate
effectively with those who might be vulnerable
to suicide is an important part of any suicide
prevention strategy

www.epapergallery.com

We also need to make sure that policymakers and planners care enough about suicide
prevention to make it a priority, and to fund it
at a level that is equal with its significance as a
public health problem.
We need to make sure that clinicians and
other service providers care enough about it to
make suicide prevention their core business.
And we need to make sure that communities
care enough about it to be able to identify and
support those who may be at heightened risk.
Bi added that most of all as individuals we
need to ensure that we are caring ourselves.
She emphasized that we need to look out
for others who may be struggling, and let them
tell their story in their own way and at their
own pace.
She however pointed out that because
suicide is a very sensitive issue careful and
considered messages about suicide and its
prevention are warranted.

COMMUNITIES ASSURED OF CONTINUED ASSISTANCE

FIJIAN communities affected by Cyclone
Winston have been assured that they
will continue to receive support in their
rehabilitation process.
This is after a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) on Tropical Cyclone
Winston Response and Recovery Project
in Fiji was signed earlier this month by the
Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu and the
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident
Representative OsnatLubrani.
Minister Seruiratu thanked UNDP for the
initiative towards the recovery framework

and for the partnership that has enabled the

government to deliver these services to the
people not only in humanitarian response but
also in the livelihood recovery throughout Fiji.
We would like to continue the momentum
and be consistent with our recovery program
regarding food security in which we are
working closely with the UNDP team,
Minister Seruiratu said.
This partnership will ensure that the
affected communities will continue to receive
support in their rehabilitation process and ongoing activities will focus on food security and
livelihood restoration, he said.
Mr Seruiratu also acknowledged UNDP for

the tools provided to the Ministry that youths

in remote areas are putting into good use and
stated that the Ministry will continue with the
recovery efforts.
Vegetable supplies around the country are
returning to normalcy while root crops are still
picking up and will normalize in the next few
months and we will continue with the efforts
made in the recovery framework.

UNDP
Resident
representative
OsnatLubrani said that we are living in an era
where solving one problem helps us to solve
other problems.
Fiji is gearing back to advance and UNDP
alongside other UN Agencies (FAO, IFAD) are

Lautoka soccer players and Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel cut the Inkk Mobile BOG celebrations cake.
Maika Kasami
THE soccer fraternity in Lautoka came to a
standstill as its soccer heroes marched through
the city to celebrate the teams win at the
recent 2016 Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants
tournament in Nausori.
The Sugar City was a sea of blue as fans
lined up the streets while some followed the
team around to the carnival grounds where
they were met by the 2016 TFL Sugar Festival
contestants.
And the team was later hosted to a thanks-

Historic Day for Lautoka Soccer

giving function at the Lautoka Club where the
players were rewarded with cash and gift packs
with compliments of the various sponsors that
came on board to support the team.
Lautoka Football Association acting
president Abdul Kadar said it was a historic
day for Lautoka FA as it celebrated its second
ever BOG win since 1985.
The Blues had featured in eight BOG finals
without success prior to the win this year.
They reached the finals in 1981, 1983, 1996,

1992, 2001, 2009, 2013 and 2014.

Weve had lots of obstacles on the way in
the lead up to the tournament but we overcame
them and managed to bring back lost glory and
pride to our district in 2016.
We achieved this simply through unity,
discipline and sheer dedication of our players
and team management and of course not
forgetting our sponsors, well-wishers and the
fans of Singhs Rental Lautoka Soccer team,
Kadar said.

He informed those present and the players
that, I have noted a very important factor
which I wish to mention and that is discipline.
It is the discipline of the team that takes it
towards its success and beyond and today this is
my advice to the team to continue on this path.
The other closely linked element to discipline
is respect towards the coach as this person is
in place due to his knowledge and experience
so always remain humble and continue the
learning process from your coach now and in
future.

Speech by Singhs Rental managing director Shiv Bhan Singh during Lautokas
BOG celebrations at Lautoka Club on 10th September, 2016.

THIS is what Lautoka soccer had been waiting

for.
And the doubt of winning the BOG
tournament has ended for Lautoka Blues.

You have made us the giants of Fiji soccer

and together with your name, the name of
Singhs Rental will go into the history books of
Lautoka Football Association and Fiji Football
Association.
Thank you to the hard working players and
the officials. You should no longer be called the
baby blues but the giants of soccer in Fiji.
Just last month, Singhs Rental sponsored
Lautoka Netters and they showed their
appreciation by a win. We also sponsored Miss
Singhs Rental in the Riverside Carnival in Ba
and she was crowned the queen. This is our
third victory as Lautoka Blues won the BOG
after 31- years.

Lautokas new goal scoring machine Mohammed Shazil Ali receiving his rewards

Singhs Rental always supports these

causes whole heartedly. When the final whistle
was blown in the final at Ratu Cakobau Park,
the city of Lautoka woke up. The sounds of fire
crackers was heard, the people were waiting for
this moment to celebrate. The Blues had beaten
Labasa in pool play and again in the final.
They showed that they were determined
and your performance in this tournament was
consistent. With the right attitude the Blues had
the fighting spirit to deliver.
During the float procession, the support
from fans was tremendous. Many of us saw the
BOG trophy for the first time because of your
hard work.

This memory will be cherished for years.

As promised and together with the support from
other sponsors the prize-money has topped up
and will be shared among the players and the
officials. Please use the money and the token
of appreciation nicely and wisely. This is just
one of the titles you have won so try to keep
up. You can also win the National League title
and the IDC title also this year for the Lautoka
Blues.
Singhs Rental will always be behind the
Blues with its usual support. This is our team
so let us unite and celebrate more.
Thank You.

Finau enjoys new

opportunity
Maika Kasami

Peni Finau (front-second from left) with the team as they met the TFL Sugar Festival contestants during
the victory parade. Photo: Sanjay Goundar.

AT only 35-years of age, Peni Finau was the oldest player in the Singhs
Rental Lautoka team for the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants 2016.
When Lautoka won its first BOG title in 1985, Finau was only 4-years
old.
And the former Ba and Nadroga rep said he felt proud and
emotional to have been able to lead and guide the young players in the
team to the historic BOG win for the Sugar City side.
Lautoka twice defeated Labasa, first in pool play (4-2) and then later in
the final 2-0 to bask in glory and end a 31-year jinx.
Finau recalls his youth days when he was in a similar situation
being brought up under the guidance of yester-year players like
Malakai Kenahewe, Luke Nabaro, Luke Vidovi, Jope Naquruwati,
Emosi Baleinuku, Manoa Masi and Esala Masi to name a few.
Im 35 now and feel really honoured to lead some of these young
players in Lautoka, Finau said.
I salute the young players for being disciplined on and off the
field and standing tall when it mattered during crunch time at the BOG.
I would say Im lucky to be part of this Lautoka team that has some
very hard working officials that has good leadership skills, understand
the needs and wants of the players and recognizing the welfare of
players.
The young players led by another senior player Jone Vonu Junior
took on the task of battling the Babasiga Lions in the BOG finale when
key players Finau, Ilaitia Tuilau, Ratu Josefata Dugucagi and Edward
Justin were ruled out.
The lanky utility player Finau said he will continue to pursue his
career with the Blues until he decides the time when it is right to call it
quits from competitive football.

the BOG victory parade. Photos: Sanjay Goundar.

LAUTOKA Football Association team director to the 2016 Inkk

Mobile Battle of the Giants Krishna Chandra said that its win at Ratu
Cakobau Park in Nausori had silenced some of its critics.
Chandra, who had been part of the Blues winning team of the past
as well, revealed this during the Singhs Rental Lautoka soccer BOG
celebrations function at the Lautoka Club on September 10.
He revealed that the players were promised beforehand that they will
share the total prize-money if they won the BOG.
It was a big risk that I took, he said of the promise he made to the
players.
I always told my players that this (Lautoka) is one district that
every second person you find is a critic.
The win by the team has silenced some of those critics.
But we will not lie down here, Chandra added.
With the BOG title now in the trophy cabinet, he said they will shift
focus to the Vodafone National League and later the Courts IDC in
Suva in October.
Chandra said he will always cherish leading a young team to this
years BOG triumph.
He remembered telling the players that their decision on and off
the field will determine their destination.
We will also try our best to go for the League title and also aim for
the IDC title for the fans of Lautoka. It was a proud moment to lead a
team of dedicated players.
And as you all may know that their decision making was right
together with the hardworking executives and the end result is the
trophy.
The $15,000 BOG first prize-money was topped up by an
additional $15,000 by the sponsors which saw the players sharing
$30,000 plus gift packs from companies like Punjas FMF and BSP,
and top up mobile phone recharge with the compliments of Vodafone
and Inkk Mobile.

FIJI Football Association president Rajesh
Patel heaped praises on the current crop of
Singhs Rental Lautoka soccer players for
lifting the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants title
after 31-years.
With the exception of one or two players,
Patel said majority of the players were not born
when Lautoka had triumphed at the National
Stadium to win the BOG final in 1985.
He urged on the Lautoka team to also set its
goal on lifting the Courts IDC title and for a top
finish in the Vodafone National League.

Its a great achievement that you all have

been waiting for, Patel told those present
during the Blues celebrations evening function
at the Lautoka Club.
Most of the players here were not born
when Lautoka won its first BOG title in 1985
and its a special moment for the current players
that youve done it by lifting the title once
again. To the fans who were eagerly waiting
for this moment, this is a win for you!
Furthermore, he laid down the challenge
for the team that it should not be just a one off
victory.
It shouldnt be a one-time glory. Its

something you cannot be complacent about.

You can enjoy the celebration but looking
forward to the Vodafone National League and
the Courts IDC at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
One win of Battle of the Giants is not
enough this year. You have the Courts IDC and
I wish you all the best to go and prove it to the
fans that the mighty Blues now is not for one
tournament only.
Patel also acknowledged the contribution
by the current Lautoka FA officials who did
wonders in changing the fortunes of the team
with its leadership.
You may wonder why this win has come

now and not in the past few years. The win is

achieved on the field but the unity of the team
begins from the leaders of the association who
controls the team.
In the past the leaders used to concentrate
more on politics rather than concentrating on
the players and on the field. The new set of
officials that now represent Lautoka FA is a
vibrant committee, has vibrant officials and
working in unity that has resulted in this glory
today.

NADROGA look set to retain the prestigious
HFC Farebrother Sullivan trophy this season
following its sixth successful challenge.
Jacks Nadi were the latest casualty going
down 32-13 at Lawaqa Park.
Recent history had the match ending as a
close affair between the two rugby giants but it
was not the case this time around.
Though the Jetsetters had the first say in
the match as early as the first minute with a try,
the home team had many options to get out of
trouble and dominated play when it mattered
most.
As was the scenario in the past challenges
when Nadroga injected in fresh legs in the
second half to do the damage, Nadi could not

contain the champs when these players were

introduced as they took the game to another
level.
Even Flying Fijians coach John Mckee
said the strength of the Nadroga side was in the
players coming off the bench.
He said these players brought in a new lease
of life into their game enabling them to play the
game to the full eighty minutes.
In the earlier matches, the Esala Nauga
coached side had brushed aside strong
challenges from Suva, Namosi, Naitasiri,
Northland and Malolo.
Macuata was the final challenger for the
top flight teams before B-Division champion
Navosa battles Nadroga which would then
draw the curtains on the 2016 rugby season.

Blues out to emulate 1985 record

repeat history at the Courts Inter-District
Championship this year?
Thats a $20,000 question for the Blues to
emulate its 1985 success when they won the
IDC months after claiming the BOG in Suva.
The pool draws for this years IDC sees
Lautoka grouped with Nadroga, host Suva and
Labasa in Group 1.
Its the same teams the BOG champs faced
during the Vodafone Fiji FACT in Labasa
earlier this year.
Group B has defending champions Ba
together with Rewa, Dreketi and 2016 Fiji
FACT winners Nadi.
Lautoka FA acting president Abdul Kadar
during its recent tournament win celebrations
said with the same vigor and aspirations, they
would be aiming to add another silverware in
its trophy cabinet.
Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel in his victory
message had challenged Lautoka to prove to
its fans that the BOG win was not a one off
victory.
This BOG win should not be a one off
feat. You have the Vodafone National Football
League and the Courts IDC now to aim for
after the BOG glory, Patel had said.

2009 and 2010. They had altogether won on 16
times and lost in the final on nine occasions.
With neighbours Nadi and Lautoka winning
the first two tournaments, the onus is now on
Ba to make it a clean sweep for the west based
teams by successfully defending the IDC at the
ANZ Stadium from October 6-10.
