Assessment is becoming increasingly important in higher
education as a means for demonstrating and promoting quality in student
learning. Assessment is a mechanism for providing instructors with data for
improving their teaching methods and for guiding and motivating students to
be actively involved in their own learning. Therefore, students should be able
to recognize the concepts and types of assessment, interpret the concepts of

Types of Assessment
1. Formative Assessment occurs in the short term, as learners are in the process of
making meaning of new content and of integrating it into what they already know.
2. Summative Assessment takes place at the end of a large chunk of learning, with
the results being primarily for the teacher's or school's use. Results may take time
to be returned to the student/parent, feedback to the student is usually very limited,
and the student usually has no opportunity to be reassessed.

IF-AT (Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique) cards

IF-AT cards are like scratch it-win it. Students begin by answering the list of
questions on their own without use of IF-AT cards. Afterwards, students work with a
group to go through the questions, convince one another of the correct answer, and
