How Do We Give Thanks?

I received a letter from
a Christian lady who was
very distressed. She
enclosed a booklet written
by her pastor. He said
praising the Lord for
everything was garbage
and listed his
reasons. The lady was confused and wondered if the
minister might be right.
The pamphlet argued that since God would never
want us to praise Him for evil things, that
Ephesians 5:20 should be interpreted differently
than it is actually written. Many liberals also use
this line of reasoning, to try and prove that the
miracles recorded in the Bible didnt really happen
as they are written.
The booklet went on to say that although the
Bible says, giving thanks always for all things, the
verse then says, unto God. It then pressed the point
that we are to only give thanks for Gods things
things He does. His conclusion may sound good to
him, but he disregards the original Greek translation. It says that thanks are to be given for all
things, and that the thanks be given unto God.
Many scriptures show that Gods people should
expect Him to use painful things in order to keep us
moving in the right direction. I sincerely doubt
whether a horse ever appreciates the bit in its
mouth. But the bit, when attached to the reins, keeps
the horse going in the right direction.
I believe all of us need Gods correction to
keep us walking in His ways. If we chafe at our
circumstances and wonder why we are going
through difficult times we should consider the
following messages from God:

No chastening for the present seemeth to be

joyous, but grevious: nevertheless, afterward it
yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto
them that are exercised thereby (Hebrews 12:11).
Our light afflictionworketh for us
(II Corinthians 4:17).
Most of us need chastening in order that the fruit
of righteousness is increased in our lives. His
chastening is not punishment regardless of what
methods He uses. God has even used Satan to help
His people. I know that many Christians sincerely
disagree, but consider Revelation 2:10: The devil
shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be
tried.
Some people may try to convince you that Jesus
took on Himself all of our suffering so we
no longer need to endure suffering. Such teaching
sounds good, but it isnt what I see in the Bible.
Consider: My son, despise not thou the chastening
of the Lord, nor faint when thou are rebuked of Him
(Hebrews 12:5).
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery
trial which is to try you, as though some strange
thing happened unto you (I Peter 4:12).
During a trial by fire the most helpful and
strengthening power I have found is the power of
praise. When I know that God is using something
for my good, I can rejoice. Why God is using a
particular method with me is His business! I use all
the strength I can muster to center my attention on
praising Him. And it works! Whatever is going on
in me or around me, I know He is doing what is
necessary, and I feel His peace filling my heart. I
pray that you also will dwell in the peace that
passes all understanding.

HELP ME GOD!
By Mary Carothers

Have you ever

noticed how sometime
we pray differently?
Usually we will pray,
Lord please do this for
me! I really need You
to do this for me. If You
will answer this one
prayer for me, Ill
serve You forever. And we truly mean this prayer
with all our heart.
But there are other times when we are able to let
go of our hearts desire. We are able to say, Lord, I
want Your will more than I want my own way. I
know You are able to make this problem work for
my eternal good. I trust You, God. Your ways are
not my ways. And then we might cry out again
from the heart: Lord, I truly am trying to trust
You! Help me! Im so afraid that this thing I desire
above everything else will slip away
from me.
Does this sound familiar? If so, it means you are
human, just like everyone else. God tells us in
Psalm 103:14 that He remembers that we are dust
meaning He understands are limitations. We can
understand and relate to the anguished father who
cried to Jesus: I do believe! Help me overcome my
unbelief (Mark 9:24 NIV). None of us has perfect
faith; not one of us. None of us walks in complete
victory all the time.

Recently I was encouraged and impressed by an

interview I read with Joni Eareckson Tada who is
paralyzed. She said there are times when she cries
out to God, God, I cant face this. Im so tiredso weary. But I can do all things through You as You
strengthen me. Joni chooses to smile, to sing, to
trust in God. She said this is the Biblical way to
wake up in the morning. Indeed, to live our lives
for Gods glory.
When the Lord urges us to thank and praise
Him, its for our benefit not His. He gets plenty
of praise and worship by the angelic hosts in Heaven
(see Isaiah 6).
When we thank and praise God in the trials
of life we are opening ourselves to Him. We are
saying that even though we dont like what is going
on, we are trusting His love and wisdom for us. We
gradually come to realize that we are given these
opportunities to look to Him, to focus on Him. We
can walk in victory in Christ not in
our own strength, but as He strengthens us.
We must choose this path. We choose to reject
self-pity, or to dwell on our circumstances, or how
others treat us. We choose to make a joyful noise of
praise and worship to the Lord. As we do, we find
our faith in Jesus growing; our joy growing.
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually
offer to God a sacrifice of praise the fruit of our
lips that confess His name (Hebrews 13:15).

prison to PRAISE
We have been blessed by Prison to Praise for
over thirty years! Thank you. Dave & Nelie, NJ
Prison to Praise was the first book I read after
I started reading the Bible. I have been a missionary for 11 years and have given out over
1000 Prison to Praise they dont last long!
Judd, GA
I hand out Prison to Praise to strangers, homeless and others in dire circumstances. I have
been blessed by your book for over 35 years.
Mary, CA
Prison to Praise has truly blessed my life
other than the Bible no other book has ever given
me our Fathers true heart!
Maralee, ID
Prison to Praise made a huge difference in my
life in 1972. The fact that you are still writing
books at the age of 88 is a remarkable achievement, a testimony to Gods continued goodness
in your life. Thanks again for your faithfulness
over these many years.
Keith, OH

When I thought everything in my life was crashing in on me, a friend gave me Prison to Praise.
It changed my life and I havent been the same
since. I began thanking God for all the bad
things in my life, which seemed ridiculous at the
time. I decided to obey Gods Word, as you
taught me, and I was tremendously blessed. I
distribute your book to people who I observe or
think need help.
Betty, MT
I read Prison to Praise after discovering it in our
library many years ago. God has blessed my life.
Helen, FL
I just read Prison to Praise. I could not put the
book down until I finished it. My pastor lent me
the book as he knew I was struggling with a
broken marriage. I am so grateful that, through
your books, God has opened my eyes and Im
eager to learn more.
David, United Kingdom

My daughter just walked out of my life and I

hadnt seen her in two months. I was confused
and hurt and did not want to live. My friend
Jimmy gave me Prison to Praise. As I read it, I
began to thank God that my daughter had left. I
knew that God was working this for my good.
The very next day my daughter called me. This
book changed my life.
Chris, CA
I hand delivered Prison to Praise to each
Senator, Representative and leaders (over 150 people)
in our state. Please pray that they read it.
Dan & Peggy, WA

Prison to
Praise
A most inspired
account of the
grace of God
working in a human
life. An enlightening
book that is not about a
prison with bars, but about a
prison of circumstances - and
how to be set free! Millions say it
has changed their lives!
